It took bravery AND humility to ask for change on this song on the podcast. This song IS powerful, but I can see how it can be damaging. Thank you to everyone involved for the vulnerability and the bravery it took to do the work to change the future!
Mars hill church was my home 2009-2013. I saw kings kaleidoscope grow from a small band on the UW campus to being taken away to play with the “big boys.” I’m really glad to see them continue to flourish and grow after all these years.
That’s because that excellence is God himself 😊he is talking about pursuing God despite a lot of the bad Christian rep and how the church and religious or bad experiences turn ppl away from God but Jesus and God seek us despite all the bad ,He seeks a personal relationship with our ❤️ heart .
Is that what "puppet to pastor" is referring to? I'm curious because I went to West Seattle Mars Hill, where this group did the worship music. Very good memories 🙂
@@victoriawelker2485 That's right. Chad is expressing that he felt used by the leadership there. So when he says"Show me a man, an honest mission" he's yearning for Jesus, the only one of us who's been truly honest through and through, see 1 Peter 2, Isaiah 53:9
My relationship with this song is funny. I heard this band with no context of the creators of the music. It just stirred my heart. I’ve been struggling with apathy, heartlessness, OCD, fear of God, feeling like I’m not doing enough, but feeling self righteous and bitter when I got up to try to do anything otherwise These songs and songs by Ascend the Hill really have been with me in a blessed way for the darkness I’ve been in for the last 7 years. My friends noted i get judgemental and legalistic as my ocd and anxiety worsens and I tend to listen to more and more online preaching And I’ve been listening to more and more Mark Driscoll, I only knew nothing about him, just a drama followed him and people wouldn’t let him escape it on Facebook. So I presumed they were people of the type who never let a sinner repent, not that they were righteously holding a man guilty. I determined to know nothing of it and be trusting and not judgemental about Driscoll *today*. Then this song came on, I looked up the lyrics and I just feel like an idiot.
You did an AMAZING job on this video!! It really added to the organic emotion of the song itself. Also, AE is made of pure evil, so I admire anyone who can master it so creatively! ;)
Anyone know what "paint the beauty we split" means? Heard this as the ct theme song as well, but couldn't make out the lyrics, now I don't know what they mean lol.
I could be wrong, but I feel like the first part of the song is about his regret and feelings of being used as the worship leader at Mars Hill (the captains a captor and I'm a puppet to Pastor). The rest of the song is, I believe, about righting the problems sewn by Mars Hill. Through the failings of Mars Hill, they had split the beauty of God's church, and now it's their job to help paint it anew. Something like that. I could be completely off base but thats what I took from it at least.
James Isaak I hear that repeating piano note and immediately yelled to my wife, “It’s Kings Kaleidoscope!” I was floored that they had gained some mainstream notoriety.

I think it's referring to Jesus' death at the hands of the Pharisees, based on lies. They brought witnesses to his trial who lied about things Jesus had said. Jesus didn't defend himself because if he had they wouldn't have killed him and he needed to die for us.
@Elliana Randal the song is about his experience as a member of Mars Hills Church when the whole scandal with the pastor was going on...it tells the story of putting your trust and allegiance in a spiritual leader first (pastor, priest, etc.) to become jaded when you find out they have been dishonestly controlling/spiritually manipulating you the whole time, but finding God's redemptive beauty in the whole situation after the fact (paint the beauty we split) aka take what we have messed up in the church split/brokenness/etc. and make it beauty/growth. If you have been a member of various churches for long enough and are seeking the truth, you will likely experience this to some degree at some point. The key is to not give up and let the disappointment overtake your faith, but to press onward and continue to seek God & community.
Its negative beliefs that split us from the beauty of everything in life. Beauty is love, love is god, god is love, when something doesnt feel right, negative emotion, its that beauty that love that is being split, take control of the ship, take control of what you believe, if it makes you feel badly its because its split from love, paint the beauty, create the beauty, turn the tables that flipped.
Anyone else had to revisit this song after the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast?
Yes, can't get it out of my head.
The problem is I'm used to hearing the first few lines at 1.8x speed now!
Yup. I'm 3 episodes in.
That podcast is so.....interesting
I don't know how that church lasted as l long as it did?!
Yes! I love dthat podcast
Heard this as the theme song of CT’s podcast on fall of Mars Hill. Great song!
Me too!

Brings tears to my eyes. The podcast was gut wrenching and healing all at once.
I was going in a church that was dysfunctional for over decade
woah! lots of ties to the crucifixion, tables flipped, a nail of shame, dying son, curtain torn? very great song.

Dude! This is amazing! I honestly thought it was the official lyric video. Well done! Amazing!
How is this song not more popular
"HOW DARE YOU?!? WHO IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!?" -Mark Discoll
What's your point?
This song is RIDICULOUS! I'm usually very critical of Christian music, but they're clearly pursuing excellence in making this song.
That’s because that excellence is God himself 😊he is talking about pursuing God despite a lot of the bad Christian rep and how the church and religious or bad experiences turn ppl away from God but Jesus and God seek us despite all the bad ,He seeks a personal relationship with our ❤️ heart .
I love how around 1:30 it turns into a Peter Gabriel song. (Seriously, I'm a big PG fan, I love that tonal shift.)
This song is about spiritual abuse that many are going through speaks to my past experiences
What do you mean 🤔?
If y'all understood the background of this song (Mars Hill), and the "dying Son" who fixes it all, you would like it even more ; )

You should check out the “the rise and fall of mars hill” podcast. As someone who was there near the end, this is gut-wrenching
Where can I buy the CD?
Never been a fan of Christian music but this ain’t bad.
You know....it's even better when you're Christian....just putting that out there 😉

Yeah I don't like Christian soft rock either. The stuff makes me feel sleep.
Get you some Fit For a King or Demon Slayer. That's some good crud.

CT's Mars hill podcast is really an important project

This is amazing, heard it on the Lexus commercial, didn't know it was Christian.
If liked you this one you should check out their other songs their awesome!I like “the Rush “
Also yes this song is supposed to be pointing toward the crucifix of Jesus 🙂
King’s Kaleidoscope has so many good songs, definitely worth checking out.

I think of Gods ability to take pain and brokenness and turn it into beauty and a story of redemption.
Can't listen to this song without hearing Mark Driscoll's voice.
Listen to the follow up episode...
Crazy that it's about Mark Driscoll
KK led praise at MH. So this song is actually about Driscoll
Sooooo good
Wow!!!

Wait, what's the meaning behind this song?
I was looking for that answer too
It's from a Christian band. It's supposed to be about Jesus undoing what we've done and what your committing your life to.
