Anyone who says a poguroid is not intimidating clearing has not run through field of 10,000,000 million killer hermit crabs.
A crab that with three shells that has the magical ability to shatter one of their shells to allow a player to drop to 1 HP whenever they were reduced to zero. Obviously, you need to get it more shells to drop to 1 HP instead of dying more than three times. I specifically made this as a pet for the storm sorcerer in my group who just had the worst luck despite having an AC over 20 with mage armor and the shield spell, and funnily enough they were a water genasi so it fit with them rather well.
The thing you described is effectively a stronger version of the invocation gift of the protectors. But with a familiar and not pact of the tome.
Not as versatile as the other Warlock Familiars, but it makes up for it with AGGRESSION.

I love these little guys! Love the idea of a Lizardfolk sharing a kill with his crab while the rest of the party watches in horror.

This is a really fun creature! Kinda love the idea that their are just tons of small magical creatures that form symbiotic bonds with adventurers, makes adventurers feel like a more natural part of the world.
Ya, pact of the chain always felt like the familiar didn't want to be there. I wanted to add a guy who actively wants to be with the adventuring party.
After watching Zee Bashew's video on wisps, I have always wanted to DM a game and introduce a wisp that wants to travel with the party. Now I'm gonna do that and also add a crab

But one thing to keep in mind is that the giant rat makes _all_ of the rules.
As a crab enjoyer this is a fine familair. Plus if I ever have to get rid of the body of some magical creature I can just summon up a squad of my familair's homies and let them eat.
Use Flock of Familiars to dispose of the evidence.
Only problem is that I, the Lizardfolk druid, am already busy eating our enemies. One of these days all that devil blood will give me super powers.

Y'know, we really do need a tank familiar for those who wanna be more squishy. I say this in the role sense, but I will accept an actual tank as well. Imagine if these things can evolve at higher levels and they just turn into mini shell tanks that fire pressurized water. Familiar of Kawash idfk.
You can give this thing your unused magic items. It deals more damage with a magic dagger that a PC could.

Honestly, that opener on how these guys are formed is pretty s*ck as fr*ck. I’m doin’ some worldbuilding based on whale-falls and that lines just hits so hard with the vibe.

Definitely using this, not as a familiar but to interrupt a beach episode where an army of these just crawl out of the water like a legion of soldiers demanding pet blink dogs and other magical food

Sounds more like Animal Companions from 3.5.
In e5, they are more of a less risky (even compared to wild shape) scout.
Familiars and animal companions already had some overlap so thats bound to happen.
