There are times when people of the internet rally up an demand an influencer with a large following to hold themselves accountable to their past actions, it happened again this past month. So In this video, I decided to review the apology videos of RUclipsrs called out for racial problems. from Shane Dawson to Jeffree Star to Tana Mongeau. I do not admit if I approve or forgive any RUclipsr discussed, I just simply make a reaction and review their approach.

How an apology video should go:
“I’m sorry I used the n word. It was racist and I hurt a lot of people by doing it. It’s not my word to use and I will never do it again. Etc etc.” no excuses, no playing the victim, to the point and short. You do NOT need 20 mins to apologize 🙄
Being depressed and “in a dark place” isn’t an excuse to be racist.
Yeah like I know I wanna die that doesn't mean I'm going to make other people feel like that
THIS RIGHT HERE I LOVE IT
The only reason they do it is to get empathy from young viewers they make themselves the victim of their own hate. Lots of times they do hate themselves and are projecting. However, it is in no way a good explanation or reason for being racist. It makes me so angry that they sit there and cry snake tears just to get attention and empathy.
I had my whole family killed and the killer said they've been dealing with depression for years now so I guess it's okay.

Not to get personal, but I'm clinically depressed, severely anxious, & currently disabled by my chronic illness. Strangely, never once did I resort to shouting vile slurs aimed at marginalized people.
Their reaction isn’t because they’re not racist, but because they’re worried other people will find out and they’ll lose their following, friends, money, etc. It’s one thing to be ignorant and willing to learn and its another to victimize yourself and try to sweep everything under the rug.

Seriously, apologies are so simple to do properly: admission of guilt, acknowledgement of consequences, and promising to improve. And most importantly, NOT TRYING TO DEFEND YOUR ACTIONS, you can explain why you made that mistake at the time, but not say it like you think you were in the right. Literally basic social shit we should have figured out in elementary school

Bro for real said "something happened to ME" like she got called the n word. Bruh
I saw this really good quote recently that said something along the lines of "Instead of saying you're not racist, you should really be saying 'I do not want to be racist". It's much better than just going "I'm not racist!!!" and seeming like you're just denying everything, while if you go "I don't want to be racist" means that you did, in fact, act out of line and racist, but you want to be better.
That’s strong
That's beautiful
✨B E A U T I F U L✨
I think this is an awesome quote. I want people to learn and grow and this includes myself. “I do not want to be racist” is more anti racist than just saying “IM NOT RACIST” and getting defensive. It allows room for you to grow rather than just stop learning.
that’s a good quote! I’ll keep that in mind.
See, this is why Jenna Marbles' apology was great. She recognized that her actions were racist and sincerely apologized for what she did. She refused to cry during the video and edited out parts where she started to cry because she didn't want to get sympathy from the video, she wanted to apologize. And she went on in the video to call herself out for a series she did in the past that relied heavily on gender stereotypes, like she DID THAT. Jenna Marbles is the only one of these controversial figures who's actually bettered themselves and actually apologized.
@Lizbeth V. - The fish tank thing was a different apology she made years ago.
Nobody called her out or made her apologize either, that was genuinely something she felt bad about and said sorry unprompted.
The video is deleted tho..so.....
@@jennah1569 she said she was going to delete it in the video if I remember correctly. Even then deleting something isn't really a cause for concern. She owned up and recognized, most own up but then go straight to defensiveness. I'm assuming you were just stating something, but she did say she didn't want to leave it up for too long
Liza also had another good apology

When i was at work, we were talking about what we’re gonna do for Halloween and whatnot. I asked one of my coworkers what she was doing since she hasn’t said anything and she said “i don’t celebrate Halloween” and all of us were like “wtfff it’s such a fun time” we explained how you don’t have to make it about anything but a day to just go out and have fun because she was saying it was about satan. We were telling her she was missing out on so much fun and that it doesn’t have to be about satan and whatever … and then i realized that we were lowkey ganging up on her. So i stopped everyone and said “look, she believes it’s about satan and we don’t. We can’t force her to believe in something she doesn’t, it’s pretty messed up” i apologized to her because we are sitting her telling her that her beliefs are wrong because we believe in something else. I still feel bad about it, just because it was about something so small like a “holiday” doesn’t mean it’s not wrong. Some of the people in that conversation still think I’m wrong but again .. i can’t make them see something they don’t want to. But the other understood what i was saying and also apologized to her ..
if an apology video is longer than 7 minutes, they are most likely trying to excuse their actions. a good apology states what they've done, why it's bad, and apologises and asks for forgiveness, whilst not expecting it. anything longer and they start trying to excuse it and beg for forgiveness

Jenna Marbles is now the standard for "white racism apologies"
1. She didn't defend herself or her behavior
2. She SHOWED the clips in question for context and education
3. She didn't wait until her subscriber count started tanking before she took accountability. She FELT BAD about her previous actions and went out of her way to come out with it on her own
4. She genuinely supports #BlackLivesMatter
PS: These RUclips personalities really need to learn the difference between real people from marginalized groups holding them accountable, and online bullies USING this 'cancel culture' momentum to do what they've been doing since 2009: telling random people on the internet to go kill themselves.
Online bullying PREDATES cancel culture. Don't conflate the two.
100%
Jenna also went and showed clips that hadn't resurfaced. She just felt terrible about them and wanted to apologise regardless of the fact that she hadn't been called out on them.
I still don't buy these "apologies videos" if they didn't have that mind set they wouldn't have said it in the first place, this is just damage control.
I love Jenna Marbles for being an actual person ❤❤❤❤
Besides, she wasn’t even being racist as far as I can tell

Hilarious opening 😂 also is tana that girl that iddubz went to her tour and told her “say N-word” instead of “say cheese” at a meet and greet cause he knew she got called out for saying it wanted to mess with her and she threw a whole fit saying he was dangerous and made her feel “unsafe.” As if this scrawny internet guy was dangerous or something?
I can't imagine being scared of Idubbz loll
A good apology is acknowledging your mistakes and lecturing your audience on why your actions are wrong, especially when its filled with mostly kids.
“I’m not hungry, I have full friends”
“I’m not stupid, I have smart friends”
“I’m not blind, I have friends that can see”

“I’m not racist I have blAcK friENds-“

“I’m not a virgin I have non-virgin friends”.
Im not short, i have tall friends 😌✋
I can't take an apology seriously if there's an ad and the comments are turned off.
"Guys I am not like that. My best friend died when I was 3 a"- CAN YOU SAVE THE LEGO MAN FROM LAVA!? BUY LEGO SET NOW AND SAAAVVVVVE HIMMM!
To be fair, some people turn off comments to make sure the video has everyone's full attention instead of people arguing in the comments.
@@plushiehamsterr4258 BYE LMFAO-
"A man has fallen for a man in Lego City."
@@melody5893 and you know this how? You're arguing about it right now. If I were a creator, and I wanted to apologise for something, I would turn off comments. Because if you're a huge content creator, there are people who are die hard fans that would defend you from everything. And there are people that hate you. Those two groups are never going to get along. And those arguments take focus off of what you did wrong and what you're saying about it.
"i was in a dark place so i called someone the n word" like what sense does that make??
you're so good at explaining how people online should be apolagizing in a short and direct way.
They aren’t sorry for it, they are sorry for getting caught.
Getting caught when they upload this shit online... I don't understand.
Factssss
Jimmy Peligro: they just don’t think about the consequences for their actions and think that their “fame” will get them out of anything or any scandal they are in 🤷♀️
I think they’re just afraid how it will affect them, they’re not sorry, they just don’t want to lose followers, but if they weren’t filmed saying it, they would continue to say it with no remorse
It seems to be some PR. So they arent "cancelled". Which also can sometimes just mean ew, I don't want to watch you because of all this. I don't watch any of them, but dear god, it's so awkward. It's almost like a coming out video, where a youtuber sheds a few tears and talks about how they hope people will still accept now that their racism is out of the closet. I'd hope maybe someone had something move their heart, but if it has they are good at hiding that. But damn, they could educate and decide to become an antiracist, collaborate with someone who was Black (if they dare) and talk openly about their own bad ideas and that person could inform what it feels like, the history, the present. Deppressinggg.
“It should be treated as a bigger picture rather than a personal affair”. THISSSSSSSSS
"Omg like I'm sorry I've offended you guys please don't unsubscribe 😭😭😭😭😭😭"
Having grown up White around racism their apologies made me cringe a lot. I’m not perfect but I’ve made an active effort to learn and grow. The idea that racism is individual actions instead of a constant tilted system is what I had to outgrow when I hit that wall of “what I learned in childhood doesn’t seem to match the real world.” To see people in their 30s still being in that mindset of making it personal is downright painful.
The idea of getting cancelled or having your past mistakes thrown back at you completely overrules the damage they did and it’s so so obvious they’re not sincere about it, because they genuinely don’t understand what the big deal is over some jokes. As long as they didn’t mean them, they think it’s not “real racism.” They judge other people’s actions and their own intent and that’s something I’m glad I unlearned. If they took an effort to listen instead of defend their good nature they’d be able to outgrow it too.
Cats periodt we stan educated queens love you
k4nma thank you so much!! I’m forever in debt to the patient and intelligent Black women who chose to educate me on this stuff (only Black/muslim women have been open to it for some reason). I feel bad for them needing to explain something that shouldn’t even exist in the first place and I owe my entire growth to them. No one else taught me shit about racism other than “calling them slurs is racist but it’s illegal so just be nice to people.”
i don’t know about y’all but being depressed has never made me say the n word 🤷♀️ that’s just me though
PLEASE DO COLLEEN BALLINGERS APOLOGY LMFAO
“I was a teenager” “I was young and naive”
Bruh I’m 14. Very young. Very naive.
Still wouldn’t say that word.
I hate when people use the age as an excuse “oH I wAs yOunG”Like it don’t matter which age you were you said it you were at the age where you should know what’s right and wrong -
True words
doesnt mean other people are as mature as you. we were all raised differently and at 14 your family and the people around you shape how you think and act.
@@joni4867 okay and? that doesn't excuse what he did then.
@@lovepuppy4627 i never said it did, where did you get that from?
being in a “dark place” is very similar to being drunk in the way that it changes your decision making skills, not your morals. when you get into a “dark place” it won’t make you racist, but if you’re already racist it might be easier for you too slip up and show your true colours
I wish I could throw this comment at people who don't know this
People react differently in dark places. I’m not defending anyone and their actions, but I don’t know if what you’re saying really works. Racism is such a deeply rooted and complicated system that understanding people that have done/do racist things are just as complicated.
Even so, they should all be held accountable. And while saying that you were in a “dark place” isn’t always a valid excuse and doesn’t imply that all people in dark places do racist things, it still gives some context...
Probably could lead into the whole Nurture vs Nature dilemma.
Period
Hmmm i like this comment
I don't completely agree with your analogy, but yeah. I have severe anxiety, and was only dosed when it got so bad i was having mutiple panic attacks in a day just trying to go to school. I was also being bullied at the time. I wasn't a racist asshole because of that!
istg they tell their entire backstory and how famous and popular they are for 98% of it, and the rest is barely even touching on what they did. They also seem to have a phobia of the word "racism", probably because they don't want to feel guilty and/or in the wrong
for some reason this sounded like my dog when i cant walk him 16:43
i feel like a genuine apology would be
1. not changing the subject mid sentence
2. not whispering
3. not trying to victimize themself for making racist actions
4. not bragging about how rich and successful they are DURING the apology

I mean yeah racism is a terrible thing but you also don't wanna be known as a racist when you aren't. I think its wacc that being known as one is more important to others but like at the same time they should be treated equally if not racism more. I really hope that came out right
Angeline Bennett
Well, they only seem to ever talk about it seriously when it affects them and hardly ever do anything relating to others.
The word "racist" needs to stop being a dirty word. We're treating it as a taboo, not to be discussed, instead of a problem we need to solve and talk about
Thats because everything has to do with image these days. All anyone cares about is what other people think of them. Nobody has any morals anymore. Just money, power, image, and some more unnecessary shit.
It's like the youtubers that are racist don't realize that the only way to truly be sorry is be NOT BEING RACIST TO BEGIN WITH 💀💀💀

11. Starts video by setting up camera
Tana uses the term "cotton picker"... Even the average racist does not have an enough deep rooted racist background to even know that term.
Oof, do people still say that? That's a yikes from me
Maybe the only thing she is knowledgeable about..
"Guess we should go back to pickin cotton, cuz that was *strong* "
Can't remember which video that came from, but it reminded me of that phrase
@@alexisandrysek5510 Anyone using that term, especially if is younger than 60 or 70 years old, on the top of being a racist him/herself (if is a child means is exposed to racism), is highly probable coming from a racist family, background /community.Another small percentage can be people with antisocial behavior pathologically excited after history classes at school or even people researching and affiliating to extremist groups. This is my analysis of the possible uses of this "vintage" abhorrent racial slur.
