I am writing as the composer (John Burge) of this work and to indicate how thrilled I am with the wonderfully energetic performance of all three movements of UPPER CANADA FIDDLE SUITE. The movements are titled (rather predictably): Reel, Waltz and Jig. I wrote this work over 20 years ago and the Waltz continues to make me question the audacity of having the Concert Master have to play a solo "fiddle" part on a retuned the violin shifting the normal Perfect Fifths (G-D-A-E) to an A major chord (A-E-A-C#). It takes a bit of effort to have two violins for one player and the altered tuning twists the fiddle a bit but the end result is always quite haunting. If interested, the score and parts are available through the Canadian Music Centre: www.musiccentre.ca/node/23241 Information about other works for string orchestra can be found at: johnburge.ca/page
Dear Professor Burge, It was such a pleasure to premiere your work in Japan. The audiences absolutely loved this piece and many have commented that they can picture the beautiful nature of Canada. About the Concertmaster solo,(this is Etsuko by the way)for me it is very challenging because I have a perfect pitch. But you wrote down the actual pitch that we hear as well as how the finger goes and that helped me a lot. The tuning gives a beautiful atmosphere of fiddling and it is fantastic! But I confess....I have to memorize it in order to be able to play because I get confused when I look at the music! And at one point, you can hear me playing some wired note because I happened to look at the music and did not know where and what finger to put! 😆 But that’s only me.l just love this piece and waltz is absolutely gorgeous. When we formed this group, i had your piece in my mind from the beginning. I am so glad that we have actually done this. I hope other string orchestras will premiere your work in other part of the world. We will definitely check other work of yours! Thank you very much for a kind comment and incredible work!
