hi everyone!! happy new year's eve :) just coming in bc i realized that in the chaos of filming this, i forgot a book! Time Shelter by Georgi Gospodinov (trans. by Angela Rodel) was one of my most enjoyable reads of this year as well-it's about a world where 'time shelters' are built for dementia patients to look exactly like past decades, but they start to take over all of society... it was SO inventive & scarily relevant in its discussion of our collective obsession with the past and nostalgia for it (particularly in western countries at the moment). anyways, hope u enjoyed!! xx
First video of yours I've watched and my tbr keeps getting longer and longer. OBS: As a brazilian I feel very proud to see people reading and loving brazilian literature!! Looking forward to your next videos!!
I love how you read so many translated books-it really helps me expand the types of books I want to read. I'm also Brazilian, like some of the other commenters, and I loved seeing you reading Brazilian literature 🥰
I sometimes get bored of book videos because I want informations and knowledge about the books. Dear Kate, thanks to you I got what I’ve always wanted. Thank you for all the descriptions and recommendations. This video and other desriptive videos of yours made me take notes and add books to my new year’s list with knowing the reasons and needs.
oh yay i'm so glad!! i see no point in talking about books if you don't know what they're about HAHA so i'm glad you found some new reads here 😊thank you for watching!!
ahh thank you sm that makes me so incredibly happy!! i really enjoyed your top 10 reads of 2024 vid so i'm excited to get my hands on some of those for 2025 too :) happy new year!!
Omg I am so happy to have found your channel!!! Been tired of and uninspired by most booktube videos on my feed lately and this is such a breeze of fresh air!!! Love your content and original voice. Have been going through your videos (backlist, shall we call it😂). Please keep sharing your thoughts on books and translations!! As a native Chinese speaker now almost exclusively reading in English, I just love all the conversations about translations!
ahhh i'm so glad you're here!! thank you for watching :)) i hope to read more translated books this year & will def try to talk more about my process as well!
This is the first video of yours that I'm watching and you truly have such an amazing way of analyzing/critiquing! Instant subscribe - I love the way you speak on each of these!
Kate!!!!! I can't believe i found you again!!! I watched one of your vlogs at the end of last year but forgot to subscribe and totally lost the channel. Glad I am back ❤
just found your channel and i already love it! you read a lot of interesting books and you talk about them in an all-encompassing way. i feel like i get the gist of what both the book and your experience of reading it was like. and i love how you described what makes a favourite book. "does it speak to the heart" is such a beautiful line, but also an important factor in making new favorites. toni morrison and james baldwin are lowkey an inseparable duo lol but it's so true for me as well! i read the bluest eye and giovanni's room in the same year and both became my all-time favorites. i see sula recommended all the time, i really need to read it bc i will most likely love it. and thanks to you i'm pushing 'go tell it on the mountain' higher on my tbr (no pun intended). it sounds like such an incredible book, and it explores topics which mattered essentially the most to baldwin. i'm currently reading 'the fire next time', but honestly i need more context to truly get it, and i think that book will give me that. also i'm currently reading crooked plow and i'm really liking it so far. the writing is beautiful and i like the characters which is a great sign :) sorry i yapped about my reading a lot but we have a similar taste! i'll definitely be picking up your top6 books in the future. here's to hoping you will read even more books next year and that you'll find a lot of new favorites!
ahhh i'm so glad to meet a fellow reader with similar taste!! i definitely need to read 'the bluest eye' this year!! i hope you enjoy 'sula' & 'got tell it on the mountain,' i personally love baldwin's nonfic but his fiction definitely speaks to my heart more!! thank you for all your thoughts & wishing you the best reading year too :)
your reviews are so thoughtful and you do such a good job of sharing how you evaluate the books. Im a heavy fantasy/scifi reader and im excited to dig into some of the books youve shared here. Subscribed!
Exquisite video ❤ Love to see so many Charco Press titles and translated works! Elena Knows was one of my faves last year, and it looks like I need to check out the rest of her novels
I took so many screenshots haha can’t wait to read some of your recommendations in 2025! I just discovered your channel but I’m definitely gonna watch your other videos, you give such a kind and peaceful mood to viewers so thank you :)
ahh thank you!!! i do feel the pressure to get that book count up sometimes but gotta remind myself it's all fun & games heh. wishing the best for you this year too
so grateful to have found your channel before the year ended 🤍 i’m rekindling my love of books this 2025 and your book reviews sound so intriguing in a way that i’m inclined to read them all
i've just found out your channel bcs i'm on my reading renaissance era rn i guess? and i think you're gonna be one of 2025 favorites ahahha thanks for you and my youtube explore as well
a stacked list of so many interesting picks! loved this so much! was touched by your words on Anthony's book. i must get to him!!! wishing you a wonderful reading year in 2025! :))) and get well soon!
AHHH nathan thank you for being such a big part of my reading year in 2024!! can't wait to get to your recs next year hehe & YES i'd love to hear your thoughts on anthony's work :')
I loved Chinatown! Ended up reading more of Thuan's work and I've been loving it. Her other books are def less innovative writing wise but still brilliant
The Dark Side of Skin has completely slipped under my radar so I'm glad you talked about it, sounds great! Happy to hear Mrs Dalloway made it to your top, I'm planning to read it soon as my introduction to Woolf's fiction.
just found your channel and love this video! inspired to structure my yearly wrap-up like this next year 💕and i have to add go tell it on the mountain to my tbr for this year!!
i already started towards eternity thanks for your recommendation, and i took at least 5 screenshots during this video! thank you for such great summaries 히히
Loved the video 🩵 I also read Crooked Plow in 2024 for a book club, it’s so good! I didn’t know it was translated to English, great to know that more people will have access to this story.
sula was a reread for me this year too! & wow the second time around i rlly appreciated it so much more than the first! i also really gotta get around to virginia woolf, i’ve just been so intimidated to start one of her books
i totally feel you about 'sula'!! i definitely need to reread all of morrison's stuff hehe (and finish the ones i haven't read yet!) & i hope you can get to woolf! i think her writing seems a lot scarier than it actually is LOL especially if you accept that some parts of it will just be too wacky/convoluted to understand, the rest really shines!
I really like the fact that you mentioned in the first half of the year you weren’t able to read because sometimes when we see social media, we see like readers they are reading a lot of books like some people have read like 80 or hundred books this year and sometimes like maybe it discourage a person a little Continuing to read I was in a similar situation this year because I also have started a new job and the first half of the year. I had hard time adjusting so just like you I didn’t read a lot at the beginning of the year, but by the end, I also have read more books, basically what I’m saying it’s OK to only read like 10 books a year or something. I think it’s important to enjoy what we are reading and read books in our interest and not to focus on the number.
i think you're so so right!! i don't know when reading became about numbers but i think it's so pointless haha you could read one book in a year and just really immerse yourself into it & it'd be just as meaningful. all this to say that i'm proud of you this year too!! thanks for watching xx
Thank you for the list / recs! The cover for Indeterminate Inflorescence makes that an buy for me lol You had interesting thoughts on Brandon Taylor's Real Life. I thought that one was really good, but I haven't really enjoyed his following books. Real Life was good enough to me to make me keep coming back though just to see what he does.
omg the cover of 'indeterminate inflorescence' (& its title) is incredible :') and it's so interesting to hear your thoughts on brandon taylor!! i know his criticism is more famous now so i'll def keep an eye out for him still...!
So many amazing Brazilian authors! I am Brazilian and I am intrigued by your interest in our country, you should explain in a video if you haven't, I am new here :)
amazing! the same happened with me. read much less than what i usually do because it's my last semester of college and i've been working tirelessly on my thesis. also really glad you liked crooked plow, i'd recommend reading the dark side of skin by jeferson tenório
omg the thesis grind is so real i feel you!! rooting for you during this semester hehe & i actually read 'the dark side of skin' as well this year!! i really enjoyed it :D
Brandon Taylor recently reviewed Sally Rooney's Intermezzo. He said it's not surprising that Rooney has no MFA and proceeded to school her writing complete with examples of how she should have worded her sentences. Brandon Taylor has become even more insufferable after being shortlisted for the Booker. And when you said Real Life's MC is arrogant and annoying, I was like, yup that's the author himself.
oof i looked his review up after i saw your comment and yikes... it's even crazier considering that an MFA isn't really a common thing outside of the US i'm pretty sure? don't think i'll be reading more from him unfortunately :// but thank you for letting me know ab this!! had no idea
I just discovered your channel and came out with some recs from this video, thanks! A little luck is one of my fave Piñeiro books so far, too bad it didn't do much for you. Did you read All yours before A time of the flies? You necessarily didn't have to, but it is a prequel (even though it is not marketed as such), and it is excellent!
yay welcome!! i think i might need to try A Little Luck again at some point because i wonder if my expectations of it being more thriller/mystery affected my reading experience... and i haven't read All Yours yet but i absolutely want to!!
I’m so glad I found your channel! I love the way you talk about books and read across so many genres (and translated works!)! I revisited Virginia Woolf this year after being overwhelmed by her writing in high school and I’m so glad I did. I loved Mrs. Dalloway but I think The Waves has been my favorite of hers.
i'm so glad you're here!! & i think that's the classic experience with woolf haha i was the same! i think she's so much better read outside of class (it makes her stuff come alive :)) and i still need to read 'the waves'!! hopefully this year :D
Wait, do we know at the beginning that the main character of A Little Luck abandoned her son? I'm not sure we do until the end of the first act. that book was a five-star read for me, but I think categorizing the book as a crime novel is its fatal flaw, because it's not a genre crime novel. It's more a study on circumstance, family, and love. I'm glad you are enjoying your Pineiro journey though! She is such an excellent author.
tbh you might be right!! it's been a hot sec since i read it and i think we know she's back for some important personal reason... but maybe not the son part ??? eep! but you're so so right i think the expectation of a more suspenseful book kind of hindered my reading experience! might try it again soon :D
It's the first time I watch video by you , and it was lovely experience . And I'm curious if you study literature or something had to do with it because the way you talk about the books I feel like it's an expert way . Love you video 💜
thank you so much!! :) & haha yes i actually studied comparative literature in college! i'm not sure how much that translates to my personal reading but i'm glad to know you enjoyed :D
@KateLee3 I have a friend of mine who study literature as well so you talk like her about books, I think studying literature is the coolest thing on earth , I wish I would be able to study it as well
yes! what is the deal with brandon taylor! i read his most recent book and I was like ??? all of the characters are the same! it's like a really negative, cynical version of gilmore girls.
I saw Claudia Piñeiro in the thumbnail and had to click. I actually loved A Little Luck, so I was disappointed you weren't as into it, but now I have to read Time of the Flies. Also love all of the international reads on the list. A 2025 goal of mine is to decenter US and European writers in my reading.
i’m so glad to find another piñeiro fan!! reading more internationally was a big goal of mine this past year & i gotta say it was so worth it there’s so much inventive stuff out there 😊 i might try ‘a little luck’ again at some point bc i think my expectations of a more suspenseful piñeiro novel got in the way!
Oi Kate. Suas leituras de 2024 foram ótimas. Adorei conhecer. Feliz 2025!
omg YAY love finding other woolf fans!! & RIGHT there's nothing like them if you want to lose yourself in a cast of characters i hope to do them all again one year :)
So happy to found your channel and I really enjoyed the way you talk about each book. It’s showed that you’re really knowledgeable about it rather than just following the hype. However, the audio was not great at some time and it’s hard to listen to what you actually said. Please improve it for future video ❤😊
哦!看到衣服上寫「台北」! I live in Taipei! When you said you were a translator, I assumed Korean to English or vice versa based on your RUclips name. I should have asked, what languages do you translate?
oh haha you actually assumed right!! i just visited taipei last year and got the shirt in a store there :) i absolutely loved it though-so cool that you live there!
omg i had no idea he had a substack!! but yeah i really didn't get the hype 😭😭 so sick of novels that read beautifully but don't make me feel anything !!
hi everyone!! happy new year's eve :) just coming in bc i realized that in the chaos of filming this, i forgot a book!

You put it perfectly “how fundamentally unknowable we are” - also why I’m such a fan of Woolf!
YES no one does human relationships & yet our constant struggle with isolation like her truly no one!!!!!
I'm glad you are feeling better. I LOVE your videos! Love the depth and variety of your reading choices. Thank you. ❤🥰
thank you SO much for the kindest comment 😊 can't wait to keep making new vids this year for y'all!!

Go Tell it On the Mountain is one of my faves of all time. One of the best debuts of all time if you ask me.
YES the fact that it was a debut is UNREAL baldwin is just truly unparalleled 😊 thanks for watching :))

Mrs dalloway was my absolute favorite of the year too

Thank you for the list / recs! The cover for Indeterminate Inflorescence makes that an buy for me lol

The anti-Rooney brigade are insufferable but they don’t take kindly to being called chauvinistic. Hmm why are most of you men then?
People who look down on other people for having less or no formal higher education are the real bigots
I liked your recommendations thanks. Will be looking for your video next year.
thanks for watching!!
I totally agree with you about Real Life. It was painful to read. I have Butter on my TBR this year. Really enjoyed your video. New subscriber here.
i'm glad i wasn't alone about 'real life'!! & very curious to see what you think about 'butter' :D thank you for being here
@@KateLee3 Glad to have found your channel. Will come back to let you know what I think about Butter.

omg HAHA yay so glad you're here!! i went to taipei last october and absolutely loved it hehe that's where the shirt's from :)

omg i read it last winter and absolutely ADORED it truly a reader's book :')))
i love mrs dalloway sooooo much too!
it's so good i can't wait to keep rereading it for the rest of my lifeeee
i read Toward Eternity too in 2024 and i like it so much too!
yess i loved the way it talked about language/literature :))
Really good video. I learned a lot.
thank you for watching!! 😊
I have got many recommendations from this video and would love to read them in 2025

@KateLee3 I have a friend of mine who study literature as well so you talk like her about books, I think studying literature is the coolest thing on earth , I wish I would be able to study it as well
yes! what is the deal with brandon taylor! i read his most recent book and I was like ??? all of the characters are the same! it's like a really negative, cynical version of gilmore girls.
omg good to know i wasn't missing out HAHA i really... don't understand personally !!
Mrs dalloway is also my fav book of all time :-))))
it's too good :'))) i could yap about it forEVER
Agree on Lorrie Moore
yeah... i might try her work again someday but was just really disappointed with this one!
Oi Kate. Suas leituras de 2024 foram ótimas. Adorei conhecer.
Feliz 2025!
thank you so much!! i actually have heard of Graciliano Ramos & would love to read his work :) i'll try to read it this year!!
❤❤❤❤❤
🥰🥰🥰
What is the intro song?
it's 'one for the books' by kevin dailey!
Fellow Woolf lover here!! Literally have Mrs Dalloway beside me right now
omg YAY love finding other woolf fans!!
Please improve it for future video ❤😊
thank you!! will try :D
2:34 OMG THANK YOU!!! I enjoy his substack and SOMETIMES his literary criticism but his novels disappoint every time.
omg i had no idea he had a substack!! but yeah i really didn't get the hype 😭😭 so sick of novels that read beautifully but don't make me feel anything !!
Do you have a Goodreads account!?
i don't use goodreads anymore :') but i do have a storygraph! app.thestorygraph.com/profile/kateleereads
