As you instructed, I preset with about 60 percent of my weight to the left. I was able to compress the ball with more consistency. I hit my eight iron 165. I have never done that before today. Thank you, Clay.
Good positive instruction. It took me 8-9 months to learn proper ball striking. But I’m still drilling the technique to improve even today. Shallow club angle. Thanks.
I used to be good at compressing the ball when I first started golfing 2 years ago. Now with all my lessons, I’m terrible at it.. I was set up way forward of the ball to accomplish this, but boy did it take off and a sweet divot
Wonderful piece of advice, pre-set your weight left on the irons. I have started doing this and have picked up approximately 8-10 yards per iron. I also focus more on my alignment as there is a slight tendency for me to lean into the ball as opposed to the target. The flat left wrist is also a key to squaring up the club face! Thanks for the Great Video.
Took a lesson many years ago from one of the great instructors, Lynn Blake who instructed you to “drag the mop” which had the same result of compressing the ball. He would only allow us to do this w half or quarter swings initially, but a great way to teach it as well
This is a great video and you're spot on about the risk of keeping the face open and shanking the ball if you don't get your timing down to square the face. But wow if you can get consistent with this it's a gamechanger. For me it helps keep my swing tighter and more compact too. I feel like I have to be at a 3/4 swing to have any chance at a good strike. I also envision the topline of the club going over the ball to get that "cover" effect. I know it doesn't actually happen because you'd have an unnatural amount of shaft lean for this to happen but it helps me square it up. Here's to crisper iron shots!
I am now presetting my deloft with my irons and SOME hybrids before I start me backswing. I hold that deloft through compression. BOOM!! LOL I preset my weight left more than half AND lean or deloft my irons. When I transfer my weight to the right leg and foot , and start my backswing, I have already set the deloft and it works really well. Also, I don't FAT the ball nearly as much because my right shoulder is held back until impact!
Hi Clay, thank you so much for the tip. You are a great teacher. I just wanna be sure that if my shoulder is not open like my ankle is it ok? I always learn that my shoulder has to be square at impact for the x factor. Thanks in advance for your time
Good morning/afternoon/evening. Are there any drills for compression/consistency that I can do with a TEE, instead of the ball itself? I'm chunking and hitting behind the ball a lot
Thanks for the great lesson!. one question though, will it be applied same to the driver as well? If its different, how would you compress the ball with the driver?
Thanks Clay. I've been working through your Stop Chucking and Topping Series at Top Speed Golf and it's really starting to sink it. Feels great to hit compressed shots more consistently.
When I do this, I find my ball flight is low. I hear that zipping sound from the ball coming up the face, which is great!, However, I worry I'm hitting a stinger rather than a pure iron shot. Do I have to much forward shaft lean maybe?
Hips open, chest open not as much, and shoulders between +2 or -2 degrees. Shoulders open is not what tour pros do (at least that's the way it looks). Really like the visual of the magnetic ball almost touching ground when club in correct position. Great video, thank you.
I have heard that irons such as 5,4,3,2 need to be hit with an along the ground sweeping motion. Not with a downward compression, lagging and club face closed downswing used for irons 6+. How then can I compress long irons?
So I have follow many of your lessons. I can hit the ball solid as long as my spine angle remains stable or don’t come up! How can I stop this deadly fault
Very well explained. Missing only in the explanation, move shoulder relatively steeply down (Cover the Ball), otherwise, you hit the socket. Otherwise, thank you very much, and please continue.
You know how our wives have "Friends" or "The Office" or other shows as background noise in the home with thousands of episodes repeated every week. I have Clay Ballard, when she lets me.
Good video but willing to bet that 99% of all amateurs have no clue how to shallow the club. I’ve seen it described 100 times and still can’t make it happen
Hey, I totally get where you're coming from... That's one of the reasons I created the new Top Speed Golf course, the _20 Minute Shallowing Fix_ . I'd definitely recommend checking it out if you're trying to finally break through and shallow the club. We guarantee you'll be able to shallow it and hit the most solid shots of your life in one range session! improve.topspeedgolf.com/natural-positioning-move-arm-short-1/
there is NO such thing as compressing the ball. That might be a new term you people want to use. But the fact is. All you are doing is hitting the ball square on the club face and taking the loft off the club. if you hit your ball and you so-called compressed it into the ground, it would be flat. But, angling your club head flat to the ground, and hitting the ball square, You will get more yards with an 9-8-7 and even a 6, maybe, just maybe even with a 5. Now if you watch these pro's. they get great distance with a 6-7-8 etc. But when you get to the 5-4-3, not so much, it is just club head speed. That is why they are not hitting a 5 iron 300 years.

That's great to hear! Hope you're playing well!
@@TopSpeedGolf would it still be correct to get hands forward using irons with offset? I play the callaway mavrik max and am hitting left a lot

Good to see you Mr. Clay. Continual improvement of my golf game through your good video. Have a nice weekend.
Good to hear

His shoulder is SQUARE at impact for sure.
Look the slowmo at @6:09.
Fantastic mate!! I needed this
Glad I could help!
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard is it the same for short wedge shots. Say the 35-45m shot ?
Good morning/afternoon/evening. Are there any drills for compression/consistency that I can do with a TEE, instead of the ball itself? I'm chunking and hitting behind the ball a lot
Thanks for the great lesson!.

great video! Any advice for a guy who starts to go more left when working this?
Try to rotate more once you get to your lead side
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard thanks! That definitely has been a key for me! Keeps the face stable and prevents me from flipping! 👍🏼
What a great visual image.
Thanks!
Great video. Thanks 👏🏼

Great tips, Clay!!
There are a few really good golf instructors on You Tube ... and Clay is the best of them!
Thanks!
I was always told to keep wrists straight but I notice your wrist flip out a ton right before contact. I will try this.
Best of luck!

Thanks for sharing Michael. Most Tour players are slightly open with the shoulders. Some like Rory are really open. Play well!
Love your videos 👍
Glad you like them!
Can you put a link up to the training aid please. That's my biggest problem, getting my left wrist/forearm square at impact

magnetic trailer hitch is great idea
So I have follow many of your lessons. I can hit the ball solid as long as my spine angle remains stable or don’t come up! How can I stop this deadly fault
You have to think about keeping it stable and check on camera. Do lots of reps until it becomes second nature. Play well!
I have this down and make decent contact but have a hard time keeping my path from pull hooks
Thanks
Does this apply to fairway woods/hybrids as well?
Yes

That “maybe for the first time in your life” is killing me 😂😂
so you're just saying it's the dynamic loft?
Another tip: Get the knuckles on your leading hand pointing to the ground at impact.

you compress the ball when you figure out how to hit the ball with your body and not your arms...
