Presently MSP is given in agricultural sector. It is just to keep the farming practice more renumerative. It tries to support farmers and keep the volatility of market to a minimum. It also ensures the food security because if farmers are not able to earn then why he should sow. But it distorts the markets and destroys the natural competition, which is the basis of development. Actually, it is used as a votebank, you can see that when govt. announces the MSP it thumps its chest. The current market controlling policies are not farmer-friendly because APMC procures from farmers and a farmer has to sell his produce to a particular mandi. MSP saves farmers also from the slump in the international prices of produce. It provides the assurance to farmers that if anything will happen to the market even then, govt. will procure at the fixed price. But it is just a hoax, because the traders don't give MSP to farmers. Mill owners (sugarcane) exploit farmers also. And it distorts the cropping pattern in a region. example Maharashtra, the Marathwada, vidarbha are water scarce but on seeing UP practice of sugarcane, Maharashtra tried to copy it and gave higher MSP for sugarcane, but it created drougt in the region because sugarcane is water-intensive crop. We can see the bad effects in the field of rice and wheat cropping in Northern India (HR, PB), where a mono-cropping culture has its bad effect. Mono-culture has started due to higher MSP for rice and wheat, but it resulted in overuse of fertilizers and excessive groundwater extraction thus impacting soil health and create soil erosion (fertile soil).
