I’ve been modeling for many years. Just when I think I’m pretty good at fabricating things from scratch, I see things like this. Such amazing work and attention to detail. Without sounding corny, this really is an inspiration to me. I now I know I’ve got a lot of improvement to make. I’m currently doing 3 of those kits simultaneously and almost finished with them. I will buy 3 more when these are complete, as I’m actually building a fleet, with each helicopter constricted differently. Thanks for making such a well explained and visually informative. Definitely subscribing.
Hi tntkop, I'm happy to hear that you've found something useful in this series. I really appreciate your kind remarks and the sub, thank you! I enjoy models that let you create something that's missing and putting your own twist to the kit. Good luck with your fleet, take care and model on my friend. Johnny
Thank you very much Vincent, that's a great compliment. I tried to capture the look as much as I could. I think it'll add a lot to the build overall. Stay safe and model on my friend. Johnny
Thanks so much Floki! I'm a builder at heart so I'm really enjoying this old kit. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope I don't screw it up, lol! Johnny
Great job Johnny. It takes a lot of patience to build something that's authentic. But it is very satisfying afterwards. Can't wait to see the next video.
It really is satisfying little jimmy! I love to scratch build when I can, but I know that it isn't for everyone. I do love these old kits! Thanks so much for tuning in my friend, stay safe and model on. Johnny
Your job is really good, I think that the people who really love scale modeling not only build like the manual, they have imagination to make the model even better than the original.
Thanks for this! I working on an old 1/72 Hasegawa UH-1D Huey - nothing at all in the back! In fact, the old boxing I got doesn't have the rear bulkhead/engine wall!! LOL
Thank you very much! It's nice to have materials like the aluminum to use, in this case the thickness is very much in scale and will hold its shape for us. Thanks so much for watching, take care and model on my friend!! Johnny
Hi Johnny, Wow! Nice job on the scratch built seats. I really like the way you added the wrinkles to make the aluminum look more like canvas. I'll be looking forward to seeing more updates. Thanks for sharing have a great day. Jeff
Great video my friend fantastic job on the scratch building really brings the interior to life the aluminium seat cushions look impressive will really paint up nicely it will be worth all the hard work it’s amazing what you can do with a old kit thanks for sharing 👍🙏
I bet that, that socket wasn't a 10mm one! Awesome episode Johnny, your idea of adding troop seats was fantastic. It adds a lot of visual interest, makes it more realistic and not an out of the box build! Great job done replicating and creating the seats, i know that i have said it again, but you have razor sharp skills! Thanks for sharing, take care and keep up the good work brother!
Thank you so much George for the wonderful comment! This old kit inspires me to try to make it the best I can. Stay safe and model on my friend. Johnny
With how old the original release of this kit, I assumed there would need to be some work. But wow. However, I fear not as I have discovered your videos that will provide a great reference for how to address this kit and wind up with a great model. Thanks!
Thank you very much Todd, it does have some short comings, but as for the wonderful exterior details it's worth the extra effort, I think. Thanks so much for watching, take care and Happy New Year my friend! Johnny
Hi Shelly, I've seen the kit you're referring to on Ebay, it had the troop seats, and a different kit number. Maybe the deleted the seats in favor of the guns and rockets, who knows. Thanks so much for watching my friend, take care and model on. Johnny
David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Thursday, 12 September, 2024) I like how your innumerable adjustments and changes from the usual of your build work out well. Are you a fine arts painter or an illustrator? (If memory serves, I had heard you mention having been a mechanic.)
Hey Johnny , I've enjoyed this Uh-1 build more than all your other builds and since have recieved my own Uh-1D gunship myself I got the 1982 Revell example and its holes you've had to drill out are already holes in the floor and the roof has them marked with half-bored holes i simply had to finish drilling . I hope you don't take offense but i am going to copy your exercises to make troop seats for my Gunship ( which im going to make into Col. Kilgore's mount). There is one thing i must tell you i work in 1/48th abd 1/72nd scale primarily so i am unfamiliar with what the seat backs should measure and although you did mention the spacers are 1mm thick you didnt mention the spacers height!! And are the seatbottoms the same size or height as the seatbacks just cant really tell even though i can see your mat's grid any help with the seatbsck height's dimension would be greatly appreciated Thanks!! Excellent gunship model just wish there were more decal sheet out there besides air ambulances for vietnam era Huey's !! You do great work and thanks for inspiring me!!
Hi Eric, thanks so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it my friend. The spacer from the floor to the bottom of the seat is 11mm, and from the top of the seat to the bottom of the seat back rail is 14mm. I hope this helps with your build. If you have any other questions feel free to let me know. Thanks for your support, take care and model on! Johnny
Hi, i am doing this kit, i watch your video to learn…, please could you tell me what size (diameter) of the brass rods, the white plastic rods that you used…, and bytheway, what name is the punching device that you used at about 16:20. I do thank you so much!
Hi Kiet Dinh, thanks so much for watching. The plastic rod is 1.5 mm, and the brass rod is 1.25 mm. As for the tool, it's a pin vise with a drill bit inserted backwards to make it into a punch. I hope this clears things up for you. Good luck with your build. 😊Johnny
Damn fine work uncle hillbilly! Nephew Rick here , I must say I'm jealous that you have thought of using these kinds of materials to great success. As for using ca glue, any more when using photo etch of brass, etc I just solder the parts together, it's much much less anger for me.
Hi Nephew Rick! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! As for me, I'm terrible with soldering, something I hope to improve on. lol. Just to let you know, while using some thin wicking CA Glue yesterday, I managed to glue my fingers together on a different project, good thing I had some de-bonder on hand!! But you keep on soldering, I wouldn't want you angered. 😊 Thanks for tuning in Rick, stay safe and model on my friend. Johnny

I've had years of working on US aircraft with these seats, and I must say you've made an excellent representation. Well done Johnny.
Thank you very much Vincent, that's a great compliment. I tried to capture the look as much as I could. I think it'll add a lot to the build overall. Stay safe and model on my friend. Johnny
I'm loving this build series! The crew seats have turned out amazing and you have explained everything very well. Can't wait to see the next update.
Thanks so much Floki! I'm a builder at heart so I'm really enjoying this old kit. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope I don't screw it up, lol! Johnny
