We need to petition that this toolset be apart of base Houdini and they hire the man to update and expand the toolset. This is Houdini's missing infinity stone
It is an intuitive VFX (fireworks, demolition, storm) software, and it is where it stops. Company is appropriately called side effect, not main feature or show.
@ those are its most decorated attributes. It’s so much more now. Have you been paying attention to its growth? There is literally no tool that compares to Houdini and many tools now are imitating its innovation. It adding a dedicated modeler mode would improve the ecosystem for everyone. More users -> More money -> More innovation
This video is a perfect introduction to Modeler, which is exactly what I needed. I've tried to use Modeler for some time but keep getting lost and giving up because of the lack of good videos that explain the modeling process like this. That, plus the interface and such, changes quite a bit over time, which makes it even more difficult to remember. Many thanks for your work here.
@@voxyde well i didn't know press Q move mouse right to enable polypen, priceless ,i have modeler opened while watching your vid, actually i saw you posted this vid on discord anyway, thanks btw in modeler it is SHIFT+Q to repeat
I used modeler for several years and this latest iteration (2025) is amazing. It is also cool to try to model first with vanilla houdini - suffer a little :) Then you will appreciate modeler even more.
I can’t believe you are real! You are sooo professional and talented! I have one simple question and I REALLY hope you will listen my request: like lightning tutorial in the web or schools I’ve never found Force filed, shields or something like that tutorials. Will you bring in your channel some lessons like that? I would pay for that! It would be amazing! In the end we’d appreciate A LOT if you’ll teach us how to bring all these amazing effects in a Live Action scene and how to make it very realistic (like Eric VFX idk if u know him). It would be really amazing!! Thank you so much!
I believe the Polypen is inspired by the Polygonpen tool in Cinema 4D, and the Push function in face mode is inspired by Qmesh in Zbrush, or the extrude tool in 33ds max ( which let's you push in geometry in the same way). thank you for this amazing introduction ! I will buy this plugin for sure, such an amazing addition to Houdini
Wow didn't know about that tool in Cinema4D. It's been so long since I modeled with it haha, glad you liked the video! For sure it's an amazing plugin, super solid
I think it was inspired more by Modo's polypen - it is very similar and Alexi even mentions it somewhere in the documentation that he's been a big fan of Modo.
Looks very interesting. I'm thinking about learning Houdini. Is there any way to change the viewport navigation? I'm used to working with a Wacom tablet in other 3D programs. And I would rather not need the pen buttons for navigation.
Please, my english is not so good. Everytime you said "down Z" or "down F" the button image dont show in the screen. Could you explain what it means? Thanks for the video, anyway. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
@@voxyde OMG! Nuke would be absolutely perfect. It’s like you’re reading my mind-this isn’t the first time! Just yesterday, I was thinking about studying Nuke and thought how great it would be if Voxyde had a course on it. Can't wait :D

This is not how you have to do modeling in Houdini if you don't have Modeler plugin. If you use shortcuts and Radial Menus it will work the same way. What modeler does it definitely skips some steps and improves workflow/flow when modeling etc. Never did I use Tab to invoke any of the modeling tools when using vanilla stuff. One can go very far with vanilla but I will admit Modeler makes things better, unfortunately due to SideFX limitations, Alexey cannot fully incorporate what Houdini can do , which is sad. I also decided to check Modeler 2025 and its impressive how better modeling can be if you give development to someone who cares and knows stuff. Unfortunately SideFX just making things worse lately in modeling realm. One can only hope things will get better.
Ah sorry you are correct! I didn't even think radial menus are already in Houdini and can be used to do direct modelling, my bad. And yes it's too bad about SideFX. At this point even if they do add some modeling tools, it probably won't be as good as Alexey's modeler
@@voxyde You are not completely wrong actually. For this to work, one needs to setup the whole environment for modeling, so technically you are correct, but again, once you do it, it works nicely.
No. Under the hood, Houdini has many nuances that hinder a smooth process. A simple example: every modeling tool in vanilla Houdini uses very overcomplicated scripts for working with selected components. In Modeler, there's an optimized method for detecting selection, which makes the tools more responsive specifically in Modeler. You can endlessly tweak Houdini, but it won’t give you tools specifically tailored for fast modeling.
@@ModelerHoudini We talked about that on over the Discord. Due to some Houdini bugs you cannot do some of the things vanilla Houdini can do, like press, hold S then release to invoke tool again.
im your fan, thanks a lot for this
Hey great to see you again!
Great Video! Very informative. Thanks. I would love to see you do more videos on Modeler. It is a very deep tool set!

@@voxyde Hi ! Is it worth it compared to other software that is better in modeling? Like Maya, Blender or something else?
@@florianpernot6724 It is! Especially better than Blender, where from my experience you need a bunch of add-ons to really get the most out of it.
Thanks so much for making this! I'm hoping to make Modeler my main modeling package and it's exactly what I needed to get started.
You're very welcome!
I love the Modeler plugin, great to see you showing the new 2025 version
It's like softimage modeling tools, all polygon tools set by hotkey, no need to click any button on UI, but this is more better, thank you so much!
This is amazing. I like it. Please create more modeling tutorial videos of the entire process
Thank you, I will
"another extrusion", press "Q" to repeat last action instead, it will put another extrude node
