  • Their 1984 show with the fabulous Patrick Barlow, Jim Broadbent and singer Lee Trevorrow.
Can't understand why this has never been repeated. Should be aired every Christmas. It certainly is in our house.

In the 1960s, my inner city secondary modern performed a version of the Messiah especially arranged for young people. We spent all year practising and the joy of singing it still makes me tingle; I never fail to join in whenever it's on Radio 3. Despite its lowly status, my school put culture high on the curriculum - we went to the theatre - including Stratford-upon-Avon - and made annual pilgrimages touring Thomas Hardy's Wessex. Every year, Form 4 was taken to Paris, or Bruges, or Assisi for a week, paid for by the fund-raising efforts of the whole school. Everyone got to go abroad before they left at age 16. I'm so lucky I had that start in life.

The scene when Mary says "Joseph, the fire's gone out", made me laugh so hard when I first saw it. Very clever acting.

Thank you for this! I saw it on the stage but I'm sure it wasn't Jim Broadbent.
