I totally agree with Princess Anne...I could never understand the public reaction when The Queen decided that those 2 innocent young boys needed sometime to realize that they had lost their mother..The Queen was thinking like a grandmother...not a monarch...As far as I saw the media first started with the fact that the Queen and the children were no where to be seen and then the public got on that bandwagon...I thought it was the best thing she could have done...I salute the Queen

I agree. But i think even as a monarch, it was the right decision. They were grieving in a sober dignified manner, as it shouldve been. People lost their minds and were being hysterical. Ill never forget those scenes of those poor kids having to walk around consoling sobbing strangers when they lost their own mother. The public, largely, behaved very poorly.

So glad that the Queen's side of this issue is finally cleared up.Could not understand what it was that Brits wanted from the Queen...Diana was her ex-daughter-in-law who left the RF and was living her life dating and having fun. People were crying down the place begging for the Queen to say something - like what?!!! When she ignored them there was so much hatred being spewed at her - wondering if those hypocrites lining up the streets now to "pay respect" to her...really?!

I will always give Prince Philipp great credit for fighting for his grandchildren with Blair and not leaving their side when he lost.

As an American I was surprised by the public "outrage" over the Queen going to Balmoral with the grandchildren. To me it seemed right because those boys needed their family and time away from the public to grieve. I had an English neighbor at the time (she was born during the 1930's and lived through WWII) and she commented to me that the way the public acted was "not the English way". The media, of course, was creating their customary yellow journalism.
I had never paid much attention to Princess Anne, she seems to fly under the radar, but from what I've seen here and during the Queen's funeral, I have a lot of respect for her. She is a formidable lady.

Ex-pat in Australia - at the time, it was clear to me that HMTQ was putting the boys first. I never saw anything wrong, or "uncaring" in this decision. Once I saw headlines calling things like "we need you Ma'am" from London papers I remember thinking "don't you realise those poor boys HAVE to be the Queen's priority?". Yes, everyone was in shock and grieving but common sense and decency puts the children first. I think HMTQ explained perfectly with has speech " I talk to you today as your Queen AND as a GRANDMOTHER

Agree. Family first in this situation. Then the nation. Like all granny’s would do. Protect the children’s right to grieve as a family first. The days after had to be the most difficult period of these young mens lives. I think it honored Diana’s wishes to protect her children and their brig private time to mourn. The Queen was a very wise mother, grandmother and monarch. Remained loyal to her priorities against the tide of opinions. Emotions were running high with grief for all. The Lord Bless her !

I absolutely agree. The boys were with their family in the vast landscape of Balmoral. They had their cousins with them. It must’ve been very frustrating for them to force on a brave face when all the strangers around were so upset and free to show their emotions.
Let’s face it most of the public breakdown was because of everyone’s own guilt at purchasing the papers that encouraged the paparazzi to hound Diana.
