Lol,YES! And hummed the bass line. It drove me nuts all day. It sounds like the Waitresses, but I'm not sure.... Thank God for YT! I still rather be in the 80's. 🎄 Merry Christmas 🎄 to you all and be safe
This song came out in 1981, and I never ever remember hearing it on the radio. Fast forward 35 years, and I'm working at a large retail store, and they store playing this over the store intercom, and I fell in love with it. The writing of this song is what really sets it apart, and it's length. This has got to be probably one of the best written modern Christmas songs ever.
Before RUclips and all this. You’d just wait patiently in the car for this to come on radio. You knew some of the words but not most, but you knew you loved the jam. Waitresses nailed this one hands down. Song forever holds up. Good groove and them horns.... we all already know hence I searching the song. Enjoy the Christmas Season to all!
That's about right. I think the first time I heard this was on my car radio, leaving the parking lot of the church where the families gathered for night time Christmas candlelight service. It captures my annual attitude right up to the last hours of the 24th when I cave in to sentimentality.
41st anniversary of this song this year. Some people attribute it to 1982 because it was released by The Waitresses themselves in 82 but it was originally released in 81 when their record label was putting together a holiday album and wanted their various artists to contribute to it, according to Chris Butler he wrote it in a cab in NY on his way to the studio because that day was the deadline for their contribution to the album. Just goes to show you what they say is true, the great one's write themselves, it ain't Stairway to Heaven but it ain't supposed to be, it's a holiday song and for one of them it's one of the greats.
Yeah I remember hearing this in the car with my parents a kid and literally 2-3 years ago it popped into my head and trying to remember how it goes a bit and finding it on youtube and listening a gazlliion times to make up for lost years.
One of the few Christmas songs that doesn’t make me want to jam candy canes in my ears. I love how this little new wave song from 1982 has become somewhat of a holiday classic. I even hear it at Target. RIP Patty Donahue.
I know, right? I was surprised how relatable the lyrics turned out to be, I didn't know any outside "Merry Christmas" until now. Guess that's because I hadn't heard it for quite a few years, then heard it at a Christmas party and was like, "ohh, that one!"
I think the reason this is one of the best Christmas songs is that it steers away from the typical crap you hear every Christmas and focuses on a side that's actually very relatable. It's about being so drained by it that you Can't even fake an interest anymore and want to Just skip it. That's how People really feel.
People who celebrate Christmas are complete bloody morons. Completely. Wear themselves out and stress themselves out for something that's not even real, all so the corporations can sell more crap. That's literally all it's about. Money and consumerism. People get so wrapped up in it that they can't see it for what it actually is, and this brainwashing has been going on for so long that it's so ingrained in people from the time they're born. Not to mention all the lonely people with depression that have their mental problems compounded by this constant bullsh*t message of "family family family". The whole thing is a joke and everyone who celebrates it is a completely braindead moron.
What's weird is me too, i think almost 2 years, not sure. Heard it at a Starbucks and the barista was able to check and tell me the name of the song and I scribbled it in what's become an old notebook. Now that I hear it again, I'm thinking it's the horns that grabbed my attention: that a Christmas song would have that kind of zealous, enthusiastic trumpeting gives you a real feeling of elation.
I've been looking for it since I was 5 when I went to my first pantomime and they played it while we entered and I was looking it ever after that and I finally found it after 8 years.
The only Christmas song I can manage. Can't believe Patty Donahue has been gone for 20 years this month. She was badass, as was Tracy Wormsworth on bass, she killed this track.
