If there was a contest for best "Salesman-ship" on receiving and assembling the Shapeoko 2 machine. YOU WON!!! (in my opinion) You did a wonderful job in this production process. Thank you very much for sharing and taking on this project!!! Look forward to seeing more of your creative-ness from the CNC machine!!
Nicholas Gomez Thanks Nick! I spent all of my free time on this project build and video over the last week and I had a blast. Glad you liked it! I still can't believe I have one of these.
This machine to me is very similar to the first PC I ever bought. People asked me "What are you going to do with that.?" Since then i have made my living and raised two daughters with my income from computer work. Great job Steve, I hope to get one myself some day.
You are a good teacher! I wish videos like this were available before I purchased and assembled my Shapeoko 2. After watching this video Inventables might have some increases in sales. There isn't any other option to get a CNC in your shop for the price of a entry level table saw. I thought about making a video of the assembly... BUT glad you did!
Steve, you are the first one I have seen that has built the Shapeoko cnc machine and has made it really interesting to watch, dont get me wrong love the machine and its ability you just put your spin on it and made it fun to watch, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
Congratulations Steve. You deserve the new tool and I know your opinion is honest and sincere. Thank you and keep the videos coming. I always enjoy them and get inspired from watching you!
I am glad that you received this CNC because you are very creative and will put it to work. Not sure I could build that with a smile. Took me 10 hours to put together a gas grill :-) Good Luck Steve.
Nicely done Steve. I worked with CNC cutters for years and just purchased a CNC Laser that I am looking forward to using. It's been a while. Have a blast and pick a bunch of things that are just fun to do at first. You will learn more that way. As a side note, you can also use scroll saw patterns. You just need to modify them a little so there are no square corners. Have a blast. Best Shapeoko 2 video yet.
Steve Carmichael There are also free CNC patterns out there but the scroll saw ones are a good place to start. But be careful. If you bought the scrollsaw pattern some of the designers expressly nix its use on a CNC or laser cutter. They consider those production tools.
Paul Willmore Thanks Paul! I'm going to have to search the web to see what other people have done with it. I don't think I fully understand all it can do yet, but I'm going to have fun finding out.
Great video Steve!I really want of these it opens up a whole new world of woodworking to you, also you can incorporate plastic and metal parts into projects!
Steve you did an outstanding job here. I have programed and run big Milling Machines for metal cutting all my life. These Mills you could put a truck on but the process is the same as the small ones. I now would love to get one of these machines also as I love cutting wood. I love the fact you have to build it also. I would like to mount a router on mine. Love your videos buddy, please keep up the good work. Mark
i thought you did an excellent job on the build video. Thank you i always enjoy what you have to offer such smiley face and attitude. Also you made me feel like i really need to build one. :)
Great job on the video. I can't wait to get mine. I've almost saved up enough for the full kit. It will be a great addition to my desktop manufacturing setup.
Thanks Steve, This looks like a good affordable entry level machine that can be added to as you have the need. I may just get my feet wet on this one at the price offerd.
Steve, this video kept my attention for the entire nineteen minutes. Nice job. (And I like the trademark Carmichael double thumbs up, too.) I was surprised that no viewer asked this question: "If you set it up with a high level of precision, will it do root canals?"
Tom Nally Thanks! I was kind of worried it was too long but tried to make it entertaining. That made me cringe. I suppose you would have to tape or clamp your head down. lol
Congratulations Michael! Very good video !. How nice it would be to have one of these here in Argentina. But for now only see the results on your RUclips channel and Jay's channel, John's channel, and ... ;)
Nice video Steve. I would say this is a very good way to get into desktop CNC. Look forward to seeing some projects that you can do with it as you are really creative.
Congratulations. I dont use facebook myself or tweeter. I hope you make more videos. I am sure that a lot of cool projects can be done in this tool. For the inventables team, why dont make a nice web page for detail instruction on how to assambly. Regards from cancun.
That was great, you make it look so fun and achievable! I'm going to have to start a savings jar. And then another savings jar for the shipping to New Zealand. Sigh.
A great realistic video! I've had mine just over a year and the creative possibilities are endless. If you like putting things together and burning hours creating with tools this kit is for you. I was concerned about the software learning curve but with the free Easel software from Inventables you'll be creating something in less than 30-minutes. The Inventables folks are responsive if you get stuck, and the online blogs are full of useful ideas and free cut files. As fast as the features and upgrades for CNC routing change I don't see getting bored with this tool anytime soon. JMO.
seems like everyone I watch on RUclips got one of these for free...i must get one! It will combine my love for designing for printing t shirts with woodworking. I also have fun making props for costumes...oh the possibilities!! Great video! Will I have to buy any tools? I don't have a tap set so I know I would need one of those.
ShaneHammer Thanks! It comes with all of the tools you need, even a tap. The only things of mine that I used were a screwdriver, scissors, tape, level, and square.
Thanks for sharing, im really in the start up face when i comes too Cnc, i couldt afford the shapeoko 2, but i build a cnc from some scraps of plywood, i also had my first cuts with easel, it was so easy too start with, the only downside is that it is not very efficiant in how it makes the gcode, it cuts way too much air. Now i have moved on too use autodesk fusion, great program where you get design and cam in one package, also swaped out my g code sender, and start using a sender called chillipeppr, need 10 min too learn it, but after that its a dream too use. Third improvment was too change the dremel, i bought one of the cheap chinease ones that has ER collet. So far it works great, its so silent, and i love the ER collets, then i can use bits from 1mm too 7mm. Scary thing about cnc is that its so addictive. Really Hope i got the money for the shapeoko after a while, would be feel good too give somthing back too the guys at inventabels, they was one of the reasons i got my eyes up for this awsome hobby. Wish you the best of luck with your cnc. Really looking forward for more videos on this adventure
Jan H Brenna Thank you Jan! I love it. It is addicting. I keep asking myself I wonder what ___ would look like? lol I have 4 rotary tools and might try switching them out to see how they cut.
Enjoy your ShapeOko 2. I love using mine. I have not had much luck with Easel. I use Sketchup, MakerCam, and Universal G-Code sender. I look forward to seeing some of your projects using the CNC.
Pretty Cool, I too am on a very tight budget and a tool like this for the shop is out of reach. Plus I really suck at doing anything on the computer and tech stuff hates me :) Congratulations and have fun.
woodturningjohn I know what you mean. I have to sell things to buy shop stuff and make the hobby pay for itself somehow. I have learned so much this week. I didn't know anything about gshield, arduino, gantry, makerslides, terminal blocks, delrin nut, eccentric nuts, gcode, etc., but I figured it out. You could too!
Great review Steve! I didn't think I could have wanted one more until now. Have you thought about starting a secondary vlog channel where you could upload CNC videos and what ever else?
May I ask what you do for a living? I have watched quite a few of your vids, and enjoy your happy- go- lucky attitude. Also, nice work on this vid, I think that the people that sent you this kit have got their money's worth from you. Which is more than I can say with regards to some of the other recipients of said kit.
Ant Mallett Hey, I'm a IT Business Analyst/QA Testing/User Experience guy for a printing/publishing company. Thanks! I appreciate the kind comments. I'm enjoying seeing what everyone does with their CNCs from a woodworker perspective.
Mike Caffery Hi Mike - I will have to try and see. I have the 1/16" bit but they do have a 1/32" bit I plan to order. I'm not sure how fine or small text it can cut.
TJ Woodworkshop Hey, you can put a router in it and use regular bits. You would just need brackets big enough to hold the router, which you can make with the CNC. Also, the size bit and depth of cut will dictate how fast you can cut and how deep just like using a router for regular stuff. Thanks!!!
Hello steve i am wondering if you by chance would know what the advantage of having a 220v system over 110v would be? Is it a better machine? Is it faster?
16:59 That got my thinking, I've always wanted to make a mechanical autopen similar to this: www.wired.com/images_blogs/threatlevel/2011/05/autopen-660x495.jpg I just always found them fascinating. Also, did you have to do any touch up work after the machine had done it's cutting?
Hi Steve, Looking at the Inventables packages, they have 3 options on the kits. The bare bones, standard kit and full kit. Was this the full kit that came with clamps and extras? I'm hoping to save up for one, one day myself and curious as to which kit I'd really need. I'm thinking the standard would be good enough? I'd be paying a few hundred more on shipping as I'm overseas so if I can save a penny it would be good!
Kim Stuart-Gregory Hi Kim! It's called the Full Kit on the US site. It doesn't have the clamps. It has everything you need to start using it, but I will be ordering some nice to have things like clamps and other accessories.
Geoff B Yes, they can make parts out of plastic and metals. I'm a newbie so I will have to defer to the forums and sites with experts in this stuff for what else it can do.
Great job man! I wonder if Linn or April got one of these, or if Inventables thinks that only guys can handle a CNC. I for one would absolutely love to see a womans touch on this :-) I do think though, without sounding too jealous, that bombing the woodworking community with these machines is kinda to much. And so far, not counting a couple of "hard to read manual", the " verdict " has been overwhelmingly positive, but I'm sitting here with the feeling that I don't really know what I should know about this machine to make a purchase our not. I see that they have some rules for you to follow, and I'm not sure I appreciate that. I'm not trying to be the grumpy one in the crowd here, but I can't help getting what I feel. Anyway, have fun with your new toy :-)
Spacehero For me, I'm just totally shocked they offered me one and I couldn't refuse. This build and video took me about 60 hours of work this week in building it, shooting video, editing video, taking photos, writing an article, etc. I think companies like Inventables, MicroJig etc have limited advertising outlets these days, especially for reaching woodworkers. I think Tommy Mac is the only woodworking TV show, but I don't have a TV anymore, so don't really know. So they are turning to youtube which is smart in my opinion. Remember that my video was free for you to watch, but cost me about $600 to make this week IF I paid myself $10 per hour, which I don't. Kind of offsets the cost of the machine though.
It does kind of seem like maybe they could have spaced sending them out or something so it wasn't just suddenly there's half a dozen of these videos at once, but the real impact of giving them away isn't in these videos but in having a whole bunch of youtube woodworkers now using them so it becomes a much more normal thing to see and people watching feel like it's a machine they are supposed to have. It's like when Norm was the only game in town and he single-handedly turned biscuit joiners into a normal thing everybody had from a fringe industrial tool that no diyer would have ever even heard of. I like it because before when I used my cnc I always felt like I had to apologize for having one or something but now suddenly it's like everybody's got one so I can do whatever I want with it.
krtwood +Spacehero From what I can tell they did space sending them out because some people got theirs before and after me. I think we all are on different video schedules though, and I don't even have a schedule. lol Others will be posting their videos soon and I think there may be a lady as well but not sure. I think your projects should dictate what tools you need to get. I love the CNC and the only things I could find lacking were the instructions were not as step by step as I would like, and the tapping seemed like it could have already been done.
Joe O's Channel Hi Joe - This Shapeoko2 has a 11.2x11.2" cutting area. Since the front and back are open, you can carve a larger board one 11.2" section at a time and slide it to the next 11.2" section, as long as you line it up straight. They also come in larger sizes though. The new xcarve will carve up to a 31"x31" area at a time for the larger 1000mm one. 2.5-3" thick board will fit in it.
Steve Carmichael The idea of sliding it along, one section at a time, I like that. I am looking at a project that requires a 39 inch length. This could work by doing it in sections. Thanks Steve, I will look into it more.
Hey Steve, what a fun video! I'm building mine at the moment... kinda hit a snag though and my stepper motors buzz, then the capacitors on the gShield start getting super hot. Anyway, that's for me to figure out, what I wanted to ask was if you have tried using Autodesk Fusion 360 with this yet? It's free for hobbyists to use, but has pro level CAD / CAM / SIM
+Scott Moyse Hi Scott! Thanks! Hope you work out your snags. I have not tried anything but Easel so far. Just need to find time to sit down and learn something else. I will check it out. Thanks
Silliness Alert: So, if we mention you do we get 15% off ? If that is the case, I'll mention you -- and every other YT Content Creator that got one and mine will only cost $9.00.... LOL Sincerity Alert: I wish !!! Great video, Steve. You touched one or two areas of the build that some of the others kinda stepped over -- or maybe I just paid more attention this time. But what ever the case, thanks for the video and a Thank You to Inventables for making this happen for the RUclips Community !! :)
What's with all my subscriptions doing the rounds with Iventables CNC Machines, every time I click on my subs its a bloomin CNC Machine video. Please can we have a normal project video. Forgive the ramblings I am happy you have a CNC Machine Steve (Honestly). Take Care. Barry from England.
Barry Roberts Hi Barry! Inventables picked several youtube woodworkers to help get the word out about their products. I think it's really smart and cutting edge of them to take a chance on us youtube woodworkers to help them grow their small company. I could not turn down the chance to have a CNC in exchange for a video. I think for anyone who might be considering one, it would be really helpful to hear thoughts from different people. Before I buy something, I search youtube first to find reviews. There will be more videos coming from others too, so brace yourself! ;)
Hi Steve I wasn't having a go at you or the Inventables people, I agree with you in that it's a cutting edge thing and maybe the way forward, I was just having a bad one in the fact that when I get an email saying one of my subs has a new video, it was a CNC Video. I was just disappointed that's all. My apologies if I offended you in any way. I'll send some after eights for you ha ha. Take Care. Barry from England.
Barry Roberts No not at all. Mmm after eights lol. I haven't had any since that video. I did get some Flakes though. I know there will be at least 3 or 4 more CNC videos coming sometime soon so watch your email!!! LOL
So obviously a tool for signmaking. But why not make a software to make perfect dovetails ? All you need is positive stop, and perhaps a way to mount the wood vertically compared to surface. Could be interesting to see results of that.
Really great job on the video and the build Steve. Watching yours will help me finish putting mine together :)
John Heisz Thanks John! Have fun with the build! I had Peter, Nick, and Jay to watch which helped me.
If there was a contest for best "Salesman-ship" on receiving and assembling the Shapeoko 2 machine. YOU WON!!! (in my opinion) You did a wonderful job in this production process. Congratulations Steve I am very happy for you! Nice job on the video!
Very cool!
Chris
Chris Pine Thanks Chris!
Congratulations with your new CNC machine Steve!
This machine to me is very similar to the first PC I ever bought. People asked me "What are you going to do with that.?" Since then i have made my living and raised two daughters with my income from computer work. Great job Steve, I hope to get one myself some day.

Like a kid with a new toy. Top job Steve.
Congratulations Steve. You deserve the new tool and I know your opinion is honest and sincere. Thank you and keep the videos coming. I always enjoy them and get inspired from watching you!
Ricky Walden Thanks Ricky!
I really didn't have any desire to own one until I watched your video.
Beautiful job Steve! Now you can do portraits too! Congratulations on the well deserved surprise.
Charles Dearing Thanks Charles! I will have to figure out how to do that.
I am glad that you received this CNC because you are very creative and will put it to work. Not sure I could build that with a smile. Took me 10 hours to put together a gas grill :-) Good Luck Steve.
Steve, you always seem to make everything fun. Thanks for the great video!
GuysWoodshop Thanks! I'm glad that comes through in my videos. I wish I could just be in the shop all day.
Jim Coogan Cool! I didn't think of using scroll saw patterns as a starting point. I'm about to go cut the Van Halen logo. LOL :o)
Steve Carmichael
There are also free CNC patterns out there but the scroll saw ones are a good place to start. But be careful. If you bought the scrollsaw pattern some of the designers expressly nix its use on a CNC or laser cutter. They consider those production tools.
Good job Steve, looks like it's gonna be a lot of fun!
Lane Bros WoodShop Thanks! I think I've only scratched the surface on what it can do. I'm a newbie for sure!
Excellent job Steve. I have seen some other folks do this build and your video has features they didn't. Nice sign.
Thanks.
Great job Steve, I have been looking into a CNC when budget and wife permits, and this looks like the best option.
Great job there Steve the best video putting one together I've seen. Have fun with it I would.
That is awesome! Looks like you're going to have a lot of fun with your new toy. Thanks for sharing! Cheers
Great project excellently reviewed and built there great guys at inventables keep up the good work
Great video Steve, really like the look of the shapeoko 2, opens up a few extra ways to add things to your projects.
Paul Willmore Thanks Paul! I'm going to have to search the web to see what other people have done with it. I don't think I fully understand all it can do yet, but I'm going to have fun finding out.
Hmmm I'm getting that sense of deja vu all over again as I watched your first cuts! Wonder why ? LoL
Congrats on getting Evelyn involved too !
Great video Steve!I really want of these it opens up a whole new world of woodworking to you, also you can incorporate plastic and metal parts into projects!
bazza866 Thanks! Yeah, I will have to think of ways to use it now. Having fun carving stuff with it now.
Very cool and interesting demo video of the CNC Inventables Machine. I'll check it out. I'm sure we could always use a new toy. Thanks Steve!!!!
Elesix Estepa Thank you for checking it out!

Love your videos Steve. So jealous of you and Jay. You guys make it look so easy but I'm sure it was a challenge.
i thought you did an excellent job on the build video. Thank you i always enjoy what you have to offer such smiley face and attitude. Also you made me feel like i really need to build one. :)
Looks like a great piece of kit Steve: Have fun, cheers Harry
Harry Watts Thanks Harry! It is really cool!
Great job on the video. I can't wait to get mine. I've almost saved up enough for the full kit. It will be a great addition to my desktop manufacturing setup.
***** Thanks Zach! I love it and it fills a void in my shop for things I couldn't do well or at all with my regular tools.
Thanks Steve, This looks like a good affordable entry level machine that can be added to as you have the need. I may just get my feet wet on this one at the price offerd.
I agree with everyone else. Best ShapeOko2 video. Would love to visit sometime and see it action.
Saw Dust Maker Thanks Richard! You are welcome to come over, maybe after a GWA class one Saturday.
Great video! Can't wait to see what you do with it and see how it is going to change wood working projects in general.
ShadeTreeCNC Thanks! Yeah, I'm not even sure at this point what all I can do with it, but definitely will be adding initials and names to things.
Steve, this video kept my attention for the entire nineteen minutes. Nice job. (And I like the trademark Carmichael double thumbs up, too.) I was surprised that no viewer asked this question: "If you set it up with a high level of precision, will it do root canals?"

Nice video Steve. I would say this is a very good way to get into desktop CNC. Look forward to seeing some projects that you can do with it as you are really creative.
Dave Robbie Thanks Dave! I will probably make some sort of wooden food with it. lol
Another amazing video. You never disappoint! Thanks for the video.
Jacob W Thanks Jacob!
Excellent video, Steve!
Steve Collins Thanks Steve!
Great video Steve. Put me on the list to write a check to.
Ted Alexander Thanks! Will do Ted! .01 is coming your way! ;)
Very cool Steve!
From what I've seen, the Shapeoko 2 is awesome. I want one... really bad!
Awesome Wood Things Yeah it's really cool and I keep thinking of things I can do with it.
I need to start saving up, or find the time to do a couple dozen video's and get my hands on one of those.
Very cool I'm going to get one of those for. Myself
great video (as usual)
very informative
Congratulations. I dont use facebook myself or tweeter. I hope you make more videos. I am sure that a lot of cool projects can be done in this tool. For the inventables team, why dont make a nice web page for detail instruction on how to assambly. Regards from cancun.

Very good video. Thank you
Looks like fun
May I ask what you do for a living? I have watched quite a few of your vids, and enjoy your happy- go- lucky attitude. I wonder if it would look good/work if you put painters tape on it first, then spray it when its done carving and peel tape off when dry?
Alex Santos I will have to try that. Good tip. Added this to my to do list.
Awesome video!
Tyler Harrington Thanks Tyler!
awesome job You almost got wife wife talked into buying one.
Mike Fulton Almost? Aw, man. I'll have to have a chat with her.
Ya do that
Outstanding job Steve, just one question: can it engrave in something as small as a pen? Many thanks!
Mike Caffery Hi Mike - I will have to try and see. I have the 1/16" bit but they do have a 1/32" bit I plan to order. I'm not sure how fine or small text it can cut.
Steve Carmichael Many thanks Steve!
Are there limits to what kind of bit you can use? Do you have to use just the bits inventables has? Great video as always.
Is it faster?
whitewolf8758 Hey, good question. According to their website, you order 110 or 220 depending on your country.
16:59 That got my thinking, I've always wanted to make a mechanical autopen similar to this: www.wired.com/images_blogs/threatlevel/2011/05/autopen-660x495.jpg
I just always found them fascinating.
Also, did you have to do any touch up work after the machine had done it's cutting?
Colton Blumhagen There were very few fuzzies on the edges so just a few seconds of sanding with a pad cleaned it up. It came out pretty clean cut.
Hi Steve,
Looking at the Inventables packages, they have 3 options on the kits. The bare bones, standard kit and full kit. Was this the full kit that came with clamps and extras?

are these things any good for anything other than carving words & logos?
Geoff B Yes, they can make parts out of plastic and metals. I'm a newbie so I will have to defer to the forums and sites with experts in this stuff for what else it can do.

What is the longest piece of wood that can be used with it?
Thanks
Silliness Alert:
So, if we mention you do we get 15% off ? If that is the case, I'll mention you -- and every other YT Content Creator that got one and mine will only cost $9.00.... LOL
Sincerity Alert:
I wish !!! Great video, Steve. You touched one or two areas of the build that some of the others kinda stepped over -- or maybe I just paid more attention this time. But what ever the case, thanks for the video and a Thank You to Inventables for making this happen for the RUclips Community !! :)
KSFWG Thanks! I haven't heard of any discounts but I will ask. ;)
Steve Carmichael I was just kidding about the discount. Just having a little fun is all.... :)
KSFWG Ha ha, no you weren't. lol A discount would be cool. I think v3 is coming soon.
Where's yours at Jay??
I am soooooo jealous!
Be careful. It's addictive!!
Damn guys, I want one! Great video addition to Inventables
Jay Bates TOO LATE JAY! I've already started carving 80s metal band logos. LOL
Steve Carmichael I can just see it now... Every album cover from every metal band... lol
KSFWG Van Halen today, Def Leppard tomorrow, ooh Led Zeppelin, the list goes on and on. lol
Are you saying "The Road Goes On Forever" ? (Allman Bros. Band) ;)
LOL
Nice work Steve.
You should have videoed your daughter using the machine. Then I may have believed i could use it. :-)
JimE
blackemmons I will be doing another video on it soon, so maybe she will be the star. Thanks for the suggestion Jim!
Steve Carmichael
Steve, my thought was, if a kid could use I may have a chance. JimE
always makes me laugh!!
7:28 IT'S ALIVE!!! IT'S ALIVE!!! lol
So obviously a tool for signmaking. But why not make a software to make perfect dovetails ? All you need is positive stop, and perhaps a way to mount the wood vertically compared to surface. Could be interesting to see results of that.
havenisse2009 I haven't had much time to experiment yet, but plan to search the web to see what all other people are doing with it. I'm a newbie!
havenisse2009 Wow that is cool. Didn't even think of making joinery like that. Man, I feel kind of out of the loop on this CNC stuff. lol
Have you seen Izzy's version? Typically he had to color outside the lines.
Rob Casey Hey, yes, we were in a hangout the other night and he showed me. Very cool and totally Izzyfied!
Looks good. Would love to see better pictures of your daughters plaque. Can you post some on instagram?
Seth Gee Hi Seth - There's one on my website at the bottom of my article. www.thecarmichaelworkshop.com
If you like that you should have gone into the transmission repair business.
Impractical Fishermen I held the light for my dad while he rebuilt a transmission when I was a kid. He was amazing and could do anything.
