I love how you guys are so considerate and constantly wear a mask. Most vloggers I watch here don't bother wearing one in indoor places and on public transport.
Hi. I'm happy to see you two enjoying touring in the Philippines. The crunchy bread you had was called Pilipit, a deep fried pastry coated in sugar and best paired with a strong coffee (in my opinion). Some will dip it in the coffee to soften it up. The lumpia you ate is called Lumpiang Sariwa, which literally means Fresh Spring Rolls and it usually contains vegetables and should be eaten with the peanut sauce. The adobo egg beside the pork asado has a tinge of color because it absorbed the adobo sauce it was cooked with (soy sauce), I guess. Calamansi is the local lime here in the Philippines. And lastly hopia is a great snack. It's a flaky pastry filled with various sweets, like beans, custard or some sweet fruits. Enjoy your stay :)
Must-try Filipino dishes: The most famous Chicken Adobo and Pork Lechon, Crispy Pata (pork), Sisig, Bulalo, Kare-kare, Fish head Sinigang, Pork Sinigang (usually Sinigang shocks non-Filipino tastebuds because of the tamarind taste in it but it's one of the Filipino's favorites and worth the try for a video content). And don't be afraid to be honest with your reactions. Snacks and street food: Isaw, Betamax, chicken legs, Balut (these are a bit exotic but makes you famous if you're up for the challenge 😂), Jollibee (chicken, spaghetti, mango pie) and Chowking Halo-halo. Again don't be afraid to provide honest comments about the food. Enjoy your stay in the Philippines. 🙂🙂🙂 Edit: Balut challenge as one single video content alone is interesting enough.
This comment is so detailed guide. I second this. Additional info on Street Food: Isaw = Chicken Intestines, Betamax = Grilled Chicken Blood, Chicken legs ( i think he meant Chicken Feet), Balut = Fertilized duck egg. Just be careful with this street foods as it is not tummy friendly to stomachs that are not used to it.
One of my favorite places in Manila. Wish I could be there to guide you through, but there isn't really a perfect route to the best gastronomic experience. You can make your own and that's what you did! 🥰 Binondo has a lot more to offer. You can always come back for a part 2 or 3. ☺ Good to see you guys enjoying your stay. Take care always! 🥰😍😘
Thank you so much!! We definitely tried our best on our own! I love this comment thank you! There was so many options you could definitely come back! 😁😁🙏🏻
I always go there during Christmas season. Lots of discounted items for gifts, more food selections even in the early morning, and just more lively atmosphere. I am glad you had a blast there, too!
Personal Favorites in Binondo 1. Dong Bei - Kutchay Dumpling *The best I had so far!! 2. Wai Ying - Honey Baked Rib Rice *A bit oily but meat is so soft and makes me eat more rice - Hakaw (Shrimp Dumpling) - Custard Bun *I can a lot of this - HK Milk Tea 3. Masuki - Asado Siopao *One of the best siopao I had 4. Quick Snack - Fresh lumpia
Calamansi is a small citrus fruit grown almost everywhere in the Philippines. You can find them in some other parts of Southeast Asia and south of China and in Taiwan but not as abundant here😁 It's used to make a nice sour juice, mixed to many local food, cocktails, marinade, dips, etc. It's even used as beauty regimen to soften and lighten dark elbows, armpits and other parts of the body😊
Thank you for featuring my hometown. I really miss this place. Specially the food items and the restaurants. Plenty of options and varieties. I'm craving right now to taste these foods again 😋
If you go there on Sundays, then, many things situated along the streets such as fruits…dimsum…food…etc. During weekdays, there are certain areas that they don’t allow vendors selling along the streets…but still, you can still enjoy yr “food adventure” on weekdays.
The one you thought was a donut is actually called Pilipit it means twisted in English. Don't worry it's not stale, it's supposed to be a bit tough to chew. ❤️🙏
Rice is staple here… so meats and saucy dishes go well with rice in every spoonful. Wai Ying has good unique dimsum like Ham Soi Kuk. They also serve rice toppings. Next time try Causeway for dimsum.
Another wonderful vlog..thank you for touring us inside the Binondo area Josie and Michael!.Keep up the good work!..enjoy always and keep safe all the times..
Yay. Tomorrow is Saturday. I'm Filipino and so happy and proud that you guys are showing to the world how amazing Philippines is. Salamat po:) forgot to mention we are now living in Melbourne:) ....

Hi Jossie! I researched and found out that your best bet to go to Filipino Cuisine is the “Dads Saisaki Kamayan” I can guarantee you guys this is tge best & right place for you to explore Filipino and other Asian food and you will surely get your money’s worth! 1. Ask for regular lechon and Lechon Cebu. 2. Sisig 3.Adobo Pork & Chicken 4. Lumpia- fresh or fried Veggies or ground pork 5. Desserts: Halo-halo, mix with leche-flan, use halaya. Or, Leche-flan itself and or Ube-halaya itself. 6. Original Chinese Kikiam ( Quikiam)
The messy wires is typical here in Phili. The government however would like to place those wires underground. I'm gonna miss them tho LOL. This is Asia so welcome to Asia. It's strange tho because Manila is sooo westernized and yet it's Asian but not a typical city that you'll find in Asia. It's like a Latin American city with English signs everywhere but at the same time Asian but not quite so 😁
@@ladysnow8186 BGC, the newest business district put the wires underground. Just like other modern city in the world, their gas pipeline is underground. Makati, Ortigas CBD, Araneta City, Newport Resorts World Manila, Eastwood City and the one you mentioned, Alabang Filinvest have no spaghetti wires that are eyesores.
The Lumpia you tried is called Lumpiang Sariwa. Sariwa means fresh so that kind of lumpia is never fried. Also, there is no meat in there only vegetables. Its one of my favorite lumpia
Calamansi is a variety of Lime and the pork with egg is Adobo Tsino, a sweet version of the Filipino traditional adobo which is more sour because of the vinegar.
LECHON KAWALI means Fried in a Pan, with lots of cooking oil. It's different from the usual LECHON which is a whole pig grilled and cooked on its own oil. Nowadays, it includes chicken and slices of pork (liempo) marinated and grilled in an open fire.
Nice to see u 2 touring the busy Binondo Area the lumpia sariwa is good if you dip it with sauce. The Chicken Mami is better than the beef wanton noodles and the first Twirl bread you try we call it pilipit very hard not nice to eat😁and the last round pastry u eat we call it Hopia..the best is the mung beans version the te pineapple. U forgot to try the Siopao the soft bread bun with meat fillings inside.
That bread that looks like a twisted cord or rope is called PILIPIT in Tagalog which means twisted in English. It's a deep fried dough with sprikled or frosted sugar allover and it's consistency is brittle to hard😁
Tasty dumplings, surprisingly, is more known for their porkchop hehe. You can always ask the restaurants what their specialty or chef’s recommendations are. Sometimes I ask for their bestsellers but bestsellers can be subjective (to palate of Filipinos or what they’re familiar with) so I compare it first with their specialty (if they’re the same). Wai Ying, on the other hand, has very good dimsum haha. But Tasty dumplings also has good ones.
A must is that visitors specially non filipinos should make it a point to research first the food so they can understand the background of what they are eating. Filipino cusine is way and far different from our neighbors, this makes us unique, this should not be compared. Dont expect to much, but rather be adventurous and enjoy eating. Always Be Safe !
We call it “PILIPIT” in English is Twisted dough. That one with egg is PORK ASADO. If you like Hopia go for it, but if you haven’t tried it don’t miss it. There’s lots of variety flavors of HOPIA there. Try the UBE HOPIA.
The first thing you tried is called a Pilipit (twist) yes it's really like that. Hard but sweet. Tasty dumplings does have very good dumplings but not the best in my opinion. The steamed ones are better with Chinese vinegar, but their specialty aside from the dumplings is the pork chop rice. The fresh lumpia, ah yes the lumpia that everyone says is health. It is , but then again it isnt. Its healthy because its fresh with vegetables, but then, you can taste the sweetness right? Chuan Kee has a 2nd floor, different resto, that serves one of the best Xiao Long Bao or soup dumplings. What you ate is pork asado. It is originally a Chinese dish, Filipino appropriated, so its ours now. lol. Also not the best place to eat lechon kawali.
u missed the 1919 grand cafe at juan luna, binondo it's an old bank made into a restaurant it has a charm and history to it and you'll enjoy their coffee and food too👍🏼
You should've tried the Eng bee Tin Hopia and Lordstow Egg Tarts. But I guess you were looking more for local foods or flavors that you haven't really tasted before yet.
Y'all need to be eating fried rice with the pork dishes and my reco is to add chili garlic with calamansi and soy sauce in your noodles. It changes the taste drastically.
Rice, rice, rice. Rice is life. That's what we say in the Philippines. Philippine food have strong flavors because we eat them with rice. Exceptions would be items like lumpia and maybe noodle soup or pancit. Otherwise, all other food we have, even soup, we eat with rice. Always with rice. Sad to see you eating food cold in China town; and with no rice either. We like our food hot and with rice. Suggestion: Ask food vendors how to eat Filipino food. If they give you sauce, ask them which food item you're supposed to dip the sauce with. Btw, if they give you vinegar and calamansi and red chili pepper and soy sauce, make sure you mix them all together. We love our vinegar, mixed with either salt or soy sauce, and garlic, and ginger even, and onions, and chili pepper, and calamansi. We usually use that sauce with pretty much any fried food items: pork, grilled chicken, fish. You'll love that sauce for the explosion of flavors. Hope you have better experience in your future videos. Enjoy your adventure. :)
Hi po, I always watch your vlogs/videos and I loved them! I hope before you go back to Australia or in any other country, I hope you try "balut and penoy".It is one of the most famous food in the Philippines. Actually, it's an egg with a twist. Have a nice day! 💖

We usually use that sauce with pretty much any fried food items: pork, grilled chicken, fish. You'll love that sauce for the explosion of flavors. Hope you have better experience in your future videos. Enjoy your adventure. :)
I love these tips thank you!! 😁😁
