Fun fact, in French the "frog" is simply called the "heel" of the bow. Somewhere along the history of violin someone messed up the translation. Probably a violist.
Well, the soft part in the middle and back of a horse's hoof, essentially the horse's heel, is called a frog. Early bow makers would have had contact with ferriers in order to aquire the horsehair needed for bows, and it's possible that the two professions could have swapped terminology.
Another popular theory has to do with the small frock vise that bow makers use when they are building the frog. It's possible that people began calling this part of the bow the frock after the vise, and over time, pronouciation changed until it was called a frog.
In Spain it’s also called the “heel” of the bow :)
Ok wow in German its just the frog ("FrOsCh")

I am an advanced piano player and honestly I just want to thank you for giving such a diplomatic answer to whether piano or violin is more difficult. I am tired of inexperienced people to just yell at my face: " violin is just harder!" Both instruments have differences and thank you for maintaining equality!
Well piano is easy to learn hard to master
And violins are hard to learn and hard to master
But they're not even in the same category so it doesn't matter it's like comparing an oboe to a guitar
As a mediocre amateur pianist (and worse guitarist), I find violin INSANELY hard. But yelling something like that to your face is really stupid and rude.
And at really high levels the difficulty may be similar because people are exploring/pushing the human limits.
Oh, and I'm a mediocre cuber too :p
@@kirkt3970 That's a good point. Violin takes a combination of physical intelligence (how to articulate fine motion, posture, stroke technique) and aural intelligence (knowing if your pitch is correct, if you're in tune, if you're scratchy or clean, etc). These apply to the voice, but none of these things are particularly of concern to a pianist.
So along with violin and piano in being difficult to master, there's also the voice, somewhat easy and somewhat hard to learn, and hard to master.
The voice is in the top with violin and piano for most difficult to master. Considering things like, you're tuning blindly, each register has different articulation techniques to get different notes with different tonal qualities, and you're also working with airflow, mouth shape, throat position, lyrics and diction (pronunciation and enunciation, which instrumentalists don't worry about).
@JoeysRattata It takes practice to be able to read two lines simultaneously, which is easy for some people. The reason why violin is harder to start especially is because of how much technique and posture is involved to even make a sound, and a good sound at that. Proper bow technique, pressure, angling, and finger position are all required, and in this sense, you're doing two completely different things with both hands, whereas the piano it's a matter of positioning and pressing the right keys. So this may be easy for some people to coordinate, and based on your post it would seem so, but for most people this is actually very difficult, lol.
With piano, you can get away with bad posture and not understanding dynamics and still sound okay on piano. The piano has other challenges, such as the one you mentioned, but piano has that major advantage that only percussion instruments share, in that you don't worry about the tonality. String and many wind instruments require a great deal of muscle coordination and articulation to even produce a good sound.
Personally I find piano wayyy easier than violin, or even guitar, because I'm not used to coordinating my hands that way. I also had a keyboard at home to play with when I was a kid, whereas I didn't touch a violin till many years later when I was in 8th grade.
The skill set for playing violin ( or any string instrument, in my case it’s the cello) vs playing the piano is so wildly different that I don’t t believe it’s possible to accurately compare them in terms of difficulty.
“Why is violin so popular?”
Because twoset scared away would-be viola players
(Edit)
I’m in middle school and my teacher literally bribed the violins in my orchestra to switch to viola so they could get 30 extra credit points. We went from 2 violas to 8 violas. Lol
Ouch😅, what about the cello players, the cello guy and paino guys make a great team and are awesome on their techniques even adapting for modern music, sorry guys but unless more of the populace gets into it that way, adapation is crucial for survival and the competition of funds with math, science and history departments, though they do overlap in some ways. At least robotics has a ways to go to ever compare with professional players.

“is violin harder than piano?”
as someone who plays both, not exactly. both are very difficult just in different ways. like as they said, pianist have more notes to play and more repertoire to learn. (both violinist and pianist have both hands doing completely different things at the same time which gets difficult)
but violinist, as they also said, have to create intonation. to me the intonation is a bit more challenging because you have to be extremely precise and shit.
but hey, i love both.
(i admit violin is waay harder for me)
I have played the violin for twelve years and the piano for.. two? The piano is, in my opinion, much easier to learn. It is hard to play well, as with anything, but starting is quite simple. With the violin, you have to know a thousand things before you can even make a proper sound.

On some tools that part is a wedge that resembles a frogs shape. It's mostly a wedge with particular mechanical needs that countour it's shape.
Interesting! There's a part under a horses hoof called frog, that is softer horn made for traction and feeling. And it's form is between a triangle and a thick V, so yes, it looks a bit like a frog seen from above!
@@hei7586 that's interesting. In German, that part of the hoof is called 'Strahl', which roughly translate to 'ray'. Lol, German being extra again
One of the reasons that stringed instruments in general are so popular is because they have the sound that is the closest to the human voice. The way the violin is played, with the bow making the string vibrate, is very similar to how the air passing over the vocal chords makes sound. It’s easier to evoke strong emotions with stringed instruments, particularly the violin because it is in the range that most of us speak, because it quite literally sounds like someone is singing to us.
Actually, the instruments that are supposed to be closest to the sound of a human voice is the cello and the saxophone

I think many people don't really realize how difficult guitar could be (I'm talking about classical guitar). The variety of tone colours just blows your mind. There are many people who can play chords on the guitar and sing along with it but very few can do something beyond that because of difficulty of making a beautiful sound. The tone depends on many things such as right hand position, which side of the nail we pluck a string, which part of the string do we pluck, our nail form e.t.c. We also can do many techniques such as pizzicato, glissando, vibrato e.t.c. Just listen to the Prince's toys Suite by Nikita Koshkin. I bet you have never thought that guitar could sound like that.
I play the violin, tried to learn guitar, got scared at the difficulty. Never understood why it is so overstimated as the most easy-playing instrument.
@tara k it really pleases me, because I'm Russian)
This was enough to make us classical guitarists cry 😭(in a good way)
@@midnightstudio9175 totally agree ;)
Yeah, its hard. But not harder than violin.
As a person with ADHD, I feel that piano is, in general, easier than violin. All of my hand stimming has been super useful in learning technique. I also find that the smooth texture of the keys prevents me from overstimulating myself. A former classmate of mine who played violin tried to teach me the fingering for some notes on her violin, and I was overstimulated after just two. But that’s just my take. Every neurodivergent person has different sensory issues, so my perspective could easily be the exact opposite for another neurodivert.
That's so interesting! I've also been diagnosed with ADHD, grew up playing piano for 3 years then switched to violin for 7 years. I've always felt that it was harder for my brain to keep track of ten individual fingers on the piano than just four on the violin. For me, four fingers with my left hand and bowing with my right grew to be just the right combination of stimulation, whereas on piano I remember feeling overwhelmed by all the potential notes to play simultaneously. I've also picked up electric bass this year and found it to be similar coordination wise to the violin, if not slightly easier and more fun. For music theory/production's sake I've been dabbling on 25 key midi keyboards and I must say it's been stimulating and fun, while challenging, especially when it comes to reading two staffs at the same time. It's interesting how reconnecting with piano as an adult has allowed me to view with a different lens what I considered was insurmountably difficult as a child. I still consider violin easier given my familiarity, but maybe I'll feel differently about piano a few years down the line. I think ultimately our brains will consider whatever instrument we've spent the most time building neural pathways with the most rewarding stimulation wise, and I'm really glad music exists for us neurodivergents to have such a positive outlet :)
@@bushDid911 What you said about familiarity makes a lot of sense. I didn’t start learning piano until my final year of high school. However, I had done 13 continuous years of ballet prior. All of the barre work I’ve ever done was solely to simple piano pieces. Hand control is a major thing all of my teachers were sticklers about. I guess somewhere in my first piano classes, my brain took all of the skills I developed with coordinating the movements of my legs and feet to music and redirected them to boost my skills in my hands. I feel that’s it’s that, dumb luck, or maybe a natural talent that causes me to progress as fast as I did in my lessons. (Practicing also deserves a good chunk of credit for that, too.)
Same. I started with trombone as you don't have to press anything or use your fingers for anything other than holding it. That and it's also really fun using the slide - its kind of like a big fidgetmabob.
I personally find playing piano to be one of my favorite stims. When I'm learning a new song, I often use hyperfocus to learn it. I find piano to be very ADHD friendly. For myself at least.
I have ADHD as well, I play cello and piano, and for me cello was kinda easier. I also just sucked at piano so :/

It’s okay guys, as a guitarist of five years who’s trying to learn violin (thank you for inspiring me by the way), i give you permission to claim that violin is much much much harder than guitar. And I love the guitar. There’s just really no comparison lol.
I’m actually going to start taking violin lessons and I’m 19 years old. It’s never too late 😂 I actually played violin for two year when I was 9, but quit playing. And you guys inspired me to play again ❣️ and IM SO GLAD I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL. I LOVE CLASSICAL MUSIC NOW❤️ THNAK YOUUU ❤️

This video made me actually realize why most violin covers have the violin replace the words for songs.

I play piano and tried violin for a couple of months and i would say yes violin is much harder. All the getting used to violin stuff will take the average person around a year (bowing holding it correctly fingerings etc) but literally you can start playing the piano on day one. I remember picking up the violin and shocked at how I couldn't even make a clean single note and how awkward everything feltwhen piano feels so natural and you can play a scale instantly. Sorry... that's really how I feel! I play piano at advanced level but currently looking to switch to violin. I'm old enough to have the patience now.
I-
I hv long fingers.
I hv pretty good hearing.

piano is literally the easiest instrument to start and one of the hardest to master.
Piano is soooo much easier to start than violin but they r probably equally as hard to master.
@Tony X I play flute and piano, piano is super easy to start, and flute is super hard to start. Flute gets easier and easier(except for techniques) and piano gets harder and harder
@@bethanyhu1881I agree
@@bethanyhu1881 It's like advanced studying(Just imagine learning High School lessons while you're at elementary). It's like that, very hard to master.
Except for techniques
piano is easier in the beginning since you can automatically play something that sounds nice (if you can even find an in tune piano), but there is a point after you've learned most of the techniques where it just becomes really hard to progress and that is mainly speed and accuracy. many really hard pieces will have massive chords jumping all over the place or 64 notes in quick succession that don't change at the same interval.

Piano: easy to start, but once you understand the basics holy shit everything else is hard past 8th grade playing.
Violin: holy shit learning the technicalities and basics is fucking hard.
Oboe player: may I remind you that I can play a song with only my double reed in my mouth, without the instrument attached to it?! It's easier to tune on anything else than on the OBOOOOOOE!!!
twoset is actually next level music and comedy
Violin definitely is the hardest instrument to learn, but thinking about general skill, all instruments can be extremely difficult. For example, it can be very easy to play sheet music on the piano, but it can be very hard to do professional improvisation and general composing on the piano, or any other instrument really.

Maybe you should do some dabbling in composing.

So now imma learn to play the violin
Me, a flutist: „To make a good sound on the flute is really hard“
Violin: „hello!“
im gonna get some stick for this the ukelele is quite difficult to play to an high standard
uhh.... i’ve tried both and flute is harder to make a good sound on, it just sounds like air the first time you play
as for violin, at first it sounds screechy until someone guides you and then you sound okay

You may laugh but for non musicians like me it was super informative video :') Congrats for everyone who keeps practicing, you're awesome.
How about you start learning an instrument? The violin is super hard for me (as I am a beginner) but it's a fun challenge. Maybe if you can't afford a violin (even if it's the very cheap kind you can go to somewhere that sells musical instruments and ask about an instrument that is suitable for you (and in your price range) (also I am saying this just in case but if that's not the problem that totally fine maybe you don't have a lot of time just wanted to share the fun of learning a new instrument with you that's all) Have a nice day!
Mlle 73 recorder is a good instrument to try if you don’t have much cash. You can get a good quality Yamaha (any of the 300s: 302, 312, 314) for $20 or less on eBay. And a good method book can be found for $20 or less as well.
I bought a violin yesterday and this video is making me reconsider my life choices 🤣🤣
Good luck😁

You guys make me want a viola! I own a violin already, but I think a viola would be my next step, then maybe a cello.
I'm not a musician. But this video explains alot about the violin and it opens my eyes how hard it is. Thank you. And I enjoy being a new subsciber. Time to binge your videos.

Ynow i actually started violin cuz 6-year old me thought it was the most beautiful instrument.
Damn! You studied violin and witchcraft all the hardest things in life 😂
How is it now? Did you get bored or are you still playing?
Jo Jo I still play
I started when I was four I think, but I had to switch teachers because apparently the first one I went to was really bad XD. I'm glad I'm not the only one who started when they were young.

Get a good teacher. It makes all the difference.
The answers to why the Violin is hard just makes me wanna get into it... I like the challenge. And such beautiful sounds should not be easy to create of course
Between piano and violin it really depends on who is playing to know which is ‘harder’. Piano _is_ easier to learn as a beginner, but if you are someone who struggles maintaining multiple rhythms and melodies simultaneously then at a professional level you are utterly screwed. Similarly, if you are dexterous but tonally inept then you will crash and burn as a violinist at any level. It really depends what kind of learner you are and what kind of skills you naturally gravitate towards which is _why_ , it is good to try and get to know multiple instruments as a beginner so that you can really pick the one that you can excel and express yourself best in.
Why do violinist make weird faces?
