Some people are dissing this version, but I think that if Buddy were still alive and playing gigs, I think he'd be playing it like this live. I reckon its excellent.
What I don't get about all the negative comments is that the original is still there if you prefer listening to that. I've always loved his music, but a great song is open to reinterpretation. We don't have to agree a 'best', but we're free to listen to our preferred version, whichever that might be.
This is by far the best version of this song I have heard, well done to you ! you've brought Buddy into the 21 century, if only he could be here himself !
Just came across this and really love it. The dubbed version with background singers I find grating, still enjoy it, but it makes my teeth itch. The Marty Stewart rendition is fabulous. We are 61 years out from Buddy's passing and still are astonished at what he did.
I like it! The background vocals and Buddy's call-and-response vocal is spot on! I agree with some other viewers that while I don't agree with the drums being overly bright, they are pretty static. A live drummer with a little more soul could be the only thing to really make this jump at you. Other than that, very well done. Brilliant!
Crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back I just can't seem to get you off my mind Crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back You're the one I love And I think about you all the time
Just last week my son and I saw Omaha's local (and regional) man, Billy McGuigan do this at the Lauter Tun, being lucky enough to catch the last two empty seats. When I requested it, I wasn't sure of the version he would use, but I bet on him and won. It's every bit as good as what you hear here. If you're in Omaha, catch him, especially when, along with his brothers, he does his full band Buddy Holly or Beatle tributes. Well worth the ticket!
No misspelling, that was his real name: Charles Hardin Holley. (A typographical error on his first record contract had it as "Buddy Holly" and he let it stand.)
AWSOME!! this beats Jack Hansen AND The Fireballs mix 10 times over! Now do the same thing with "Peggy Sue Got Married", Learning The Game" and "What To Do".
Great rendition of a great song...I love the sound of the guitar and drums; the background singers were an amazing touch. However, I wish when Buddy had recorded the vocals, he would've added the "do, do, do" like Marshall Crenshaw had in his version. After listening to Crenshaw's rendition and then to Buddy's, there seems to be a void in the Holly version. Compare and hear it for yourself. When it comes to Crying, Waiting, Hoping - Marshall Crenshaw's version is still the best. When I saw Crenshaw perform that song live this past September, it was even better then.
@@vivhiggins5656 I am laughing at the spelling here; however, Buddy Holly was a musical genius and I'm a huge fan. Fact was, he never finished the song. It was finished after his untimely death on February 3, 1959. We will never know if Buddy would've made any changes to the song had he lived to see its completion.
Wish that this version of Crying Waiting Hoping was on iTunes! Unfortunately it's not. Hopefully I can someday purchase this version on iTunes using my iPod!
I used to be a purist...and maybe I still am...but there is plenty in here to enjoy. I can't believe how well the vocal works on a more modern groove. I'm assuming there was no digital manipulation of the vocal? And certainly there must be some bleed of the original track in there? Did Buddy do vocals as an overdub or did Norman Petty get great separation? This sounded like a blast to do.
The original was from the" Apartment tapes" recorded at, well his apartment in mid-December of '58. Sadly, Buddy never got into the studio to record it with the band. After his death, his wife Maria brought the tapes out. The music was recorded for it after his death. At the time of these recordings, Buddy was fighting with Petty and cut ties over royalties owed, and that is why Buddy had to take that Winter Party tour. Had a child on the way.
@charlyW34 I think what I meant to say about the old versions' drumming being "behind" the beat was they both had a "back beat," not that the timing was off! I'd loved to have seen what Buddy Holly would have done with this tune arrangement-wise, if he'd had the opportunity to record it in full.
It's not misspelled. That's his name. The headstone was erected by his parents for Heaven's sake. They have now taken their place alongside of him. Lawrence and Ella Holley.
A very good effort, though I feel the drums are a bit dominant and could swing a lot more. It sounds as though the drums are triggered by computer. A lively arrangement though...
@charlyW34 I think it could swing more, too--overall, this is a very nice version, but you're right; there's no substitute for a real drummer on the skins :-) Cheers!
@charlyW34 I love this arrangement, but agree with you on the drums. The drum part itself is good I think, but maybe if it were reduced down in the mix a bit...
I guess this version sounds good if you're into new music as well, but still, I have yet to find a cover/overdub that gives this beautifully written song justice, only Buddy's acousting version does, but it's unfinished, I just hope a really good band would finally make a really good cover of this. Sorry if I sound mean to the overdubbers here, but I'm a really devoted fan, and this very new overdub doesn't sound right, although I can say that you did fit in Buddy's voice pretty well onto this.
Buddy Holley was a musical genius.
This is a first rate production of one of Buddy's last songs! Whoever mixed it, well done!
Some people are dissing this version, but I think that if Buddy were still alive and playing gigs, I think he'd be playing it like this live. I reckon its excellent.
Brilliant dont know there music,
This version of Crying Waiting Hoping is totally awesome! It makes me want to dance in my seat!
My favorite Holly song gets a new paint job! Very well done.
What I don't get about all the negative comments is that the original is still there if you prefer listening to that. I've always loved his music, but a great song is open to reinterpretation. We don't have to agree a 'best', but we're free to listen to our preferred version, whichever that might be.
Great work indeed...I love both guitars, folk and electric!!! I'm sure Buddy is giving his "thumbs up" for this work!!!
Buddy would dig this!
Can't stop listening to this...super sweet!
The snare, the twelve string and the harmonies. Amazing 😍
The spirit of Buddy Holly still lives and will be around forever....
What a good twist to a classic recording.
Excellent, just doesnt get any better, excellent remix. Youve made Buddy proud.
I love this version too!
Buddy was a genius talent, an influential icon and a fantastic human being.
A tragic and sad loss for the world of music 💔💔.
A.great rendition of a holly classic.
This is by far the best version of this song I have heard, well done to you ! you've brought Buddy into the 21 century, if only he could be here himself !
Hi, I agree 100% the best version, amazing and if only.
Outstanding! Very nice production--the guitar parts and the drumming sound great--you guys did Buddy proud on this version
BUDDY HOLLY LIVES ON IN HIS JOYFUL MUSIC.
Just came across this and really love it. The dubbed version with background singers I find grating, still enjoy it, but it makes my teeth itch. The Marty Stewart rendition is fabulous. We are 61 years out from Buddy's passing and still are astonished at what he did.

Fantastisk !!! Gråten tar meg....
It's been 60 years
Buddy was a true Master of the Stratocaster. Still is.
What a fantastic version,so tastefully done.
ITS SO GOOD, SO FANTASTIC GOOD.
Fantastic. Ive played this over 50 times this week or somewhere close.
Estupendo, simplemente una maravilla. Buddy Holly. el mejor musico del mundo!
Un saludo desde Tenochtitlan.
Buddy holly era um viajante do tempo...em 1957 o cara tinha um estilo dos dias hoje.....
Excellent job! Buddy in the new millenium!
I love the 12 strings great job.
Sounds like the Byrds jamming with Buddy.
Love it!
Rory Storm
A little but the pace in the song is more like the Beatles who developed his music in 1963-64 recordings. Rory Storm? And the Hurricanes?
Impressively fresh, looking forward for more!
if buddy were to survive and get back with the crickets this version would sound exactly like their version.
still in love with this...
Crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back
I just can't seem to get you off my mind
Crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back
You're the one I love
And I think about you all the time
this is brill .and this is a major major fan saying this }
Beautiful. Respect.
Favorite Buddy song.
Gracias Buddy Holly, por las hermosas canciones...

Great job !!!! Cant wait to hear more like this....
awesome!!!!!
Love this song so much, but it makes me sad every time I hear it. Loved Buddy Budd so much.
Excellent!
What a good, new version of this song. Thanks.
awesome !
Awesome! The way it was meant to sound!
Rocking!
the great man would have loved this.
Love it
It's a pleasure to listen to a remix without it being ruined by the Pics.
Love it.

Are you haveing a laugh know one too beat budy holy,

Excellent!!, any more like that with the apartment tapes?
great

mp3 rocket has it...it makes youtube vids to mp3s :)
love it
nice!!!!
God wanted him to play in HEAVEN......
I love it!! I'm gonna play this tune day after tomorrow at live!!
awesome man
The ireplacable Buddy Holly with Brian Wilson and you have modern popular music (with a serious dash of David Bowie!)
I used to be a purist...and maybe I still am...but there is plenty in here to enjoy. I can't believe how well the vocal works on a more modern groove. Oh crud. I didn't realize that song was part of those tapes!
Ya. :( I still think Buddy might have cranked up a little faster had he had a chance to really do it. But either way, glad those demo's exist.
I think its great, fair play to you.
@charlyW34 I think what I meant to say about the old versions' drumming being "behind" the beat was they both had a "back beat," not that the timing was off! I'd loved to have seen what Buddy Holly would have done with this tune arrangement-wise, if he'd had the opportunity to record it in full.
super cover weiter so es müssten viel mehr seiner lieder neu eingespielt werden
AWSOME! Can you remix his other "apartnet tapes" like that like "Peggy Sue Got Married" or "What To Do"?
Buddy is the guy who did it, it all stems from him. Ask Paul McCartney. Go from Buddy to The Beach Boys and David Bowie ....and now the world
Wish they would do a modern overdub with all the apartment tapes I do like this one best Hey Its Buddy fro January 59 just not his band
Notice that the headstone at 1:45 misspells Buddy`s last name....just as Elvis`s middle name is mis-spelled on his grave.
It's not misspelled. That's his name. The headstone was erected by his parents for Heaven's sake. They have now taken their place alongside of him. Lawrence and Ella Holley.
Who produced this awesome 2010 version??
@StanleyClements ...thanx for the info...interesting.
A very good effort, though I feel the drums are a bit dominant and could swing a lot more. It sounds as though the drums are triggered by computer. A lively arrangement though...
Nicely done but, remember, without the Crickets there are no Beatles
the music master was buddy holly ]
@wrockman its not misspelled thats how his real name is spelled
@charlyW34 I think it could swing more, too--overall, this is a very nice version, but you're right; there's no substitute for a real drummer on the skins :-) Cheers!
@charlyW34 I love this arrangement, but agree with you on the drums. The drum part itself is good I think, but maybe if it were reduced down in the mix a bit...
I think the snare makes this. Driving.
this is incredible! where does this version come from?????
are his other "aprtment Tapes" songs remastered like that? i'd like to hear "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "What To Do" like that.
The Beatles did this already.
Its real Buddy Holly voice?
Yes, the real Buddy Holly!
I guess this version sounds good if you're into new music as well, but still, I have yet to find a cover/overdub that gives this beautifully written song justice, only Buddy's acousting version does, but it's unfinished, I just hope a really good band would finally make a really good cover of this.

Don't love it, don't hate it either
beats buddys original version any day.
this is a wonderful version with a 12 string guitar but i think at the end it would be nicer to let the last note sustain...
Not bad.
again who is the backing group. this is really a nothing song as Buddy recorded it just on his tape recorder.
