I've followed and admired Rudy Reyes for a long time and I do think that in a way he is still mortified at what had happened and what he's done over his career, there's no doubt he has some regrets. However, Rudy Reyes is actually one of the most coolest and most down-to-earth people I have seen online, although I do believe that he is fighting some demons as well. In most videos and his photos on Instagram, he can almost always be seen smiling but no one really knows what goes on behind the scenes. I don't think he's damaged I just think he doesn't want to relive the events of his military career and these interviews aren't really helping, but at the same time I do believe that he wants to give his two-cents on what happened because he would have had to give consent to participate in this interview and the topics related to it. There's actually an HBO miniseries about these events, specifically about these guys (recon marines). It's called Generation Kill and Sgt. Reyes actually stars as himself. Gives a perspective to what these guys see and feel on the battlefield. War is horrible, but I think it's too easy for us civilians who live in relative peace to dehumanize soldiers as either heroes or mass murderers, depending on the situation. Modern warfare has changed so much since the days of World War 2, when you could identify the enemy by seeing what uniform they wore, it's world's apart trying to figure out whether those two guys in civilian clothes walking toward you are trying to kill you with a suicide bombing or going out for lunch and trying to figure out whether that Tiger Tank with a giant fuckoff cannon pointed at your squad is hostile. War has changed for those fighting it, but for the civilians getting caught in the middle? War, war never changes.

Reyes is particularly fascinating, very much a modern day man, but at his core, a warrior, very code and honour, and ethically driven. I know people reading this are rolling their eyes or maybe even outraged at that, but it’s true. Nate Fick, a captain with Reyes at this time also wrote a book about his experience, and its interesting that he chose Recon because there was less killing, it was more about sneaking around, and observing the enemy then the traditional marine soldier. But of course, 2003 changed all that, and the tactics they used, what they were asked to do and how to do it was very much in conflict with what Fick, Reyes, and the rest believed was their mandate.

In my 12 year career in the military, I'm thankfully never mixed with such a damaged soldier. He needs support and help to ease his demons...
