    The invention of induction motors permanently altered the course of human civilization. This hundred-year-old motor-invented by the great scientist Nikola Tesla-is the most common motor type, even today. In fact, about 50 percent of global electric power consumption is due to induction motors. Let’s get into the workings of induction motors, or more specifically, into Nikola Tesla’s genius thinking.

      Very simple: by copying the patent drawings of the first dynamo, invented by the italian Antonio Pacinotti in 1860 and marketed by the french Gramme in 1869; then copying the patent and the drawings of the first induction motor (two-phase), invented by the italian Galileo Ferraris in 1883, three years before Tesla's patent. Not everything that is electric was invented by Tesla 😉

      The easiest way to imagine it, is to imagine 2 magnets. Because that's all electricity is. The N and S ends attract.. and The N and N ends repel each other. So while one winding is attracting(pulling) one of the armature poles, the one previous winding is repelling(pushing) it. Helping it rotate. Since it's AC, the one that was attracting, is now going to repel it with it then completing the cycle(1 hertz).

      No.Tesla was the smartest person to ever live. He was hit by lightning some day near a river and that hit connected a oart of his brain that made him a genius. He could read once a book and remember all.He didnt copy anyone , the others copied him. There are so many other inventions of him that in mear future we will use them such as wireless electricity.Also tesla wasnt serbian but jis parents were originated from north albania

    Nobody has any concept of what a "squirrel cage" looks like. I use the term to my students but then tell them "hamster wheel". Everyone always goes, "Aaah!"

    D/C used to rule the elevator world. As a mechanic, I have changed a few MG sets, that is motor/generator. A/C motor running a D/C generator. Back in the day, D/C motors were easier to control rotating speed, allowing a smoother elevator ride. Then, they developed variable frequency, and A/C motors were back in business!

      It has a moment of force, greater when speed is less, due to a rotational field, provided by inductor. At the
      time this field has a reaction with the rotor, where a current was induced. This rotor is at shorcircuit.That provides this moment. Current consumption at this time is high

    There are *three points* that may lead to a better understanding of this beautiful video.
    *Point 1*
    The magnetic field lines of permanent magnets emanate FROM the North pole (by convention.)
    In the case of RMFs (ie Rotating Magnetic Fields) the magnetic field lines are directed TOWARDS the North pole (by convention.)
    These arbitrary definitions are put in place in order to make calculations easier!
    The EXTERNAL region of a permanent magnet is USEFUL for our calculations. In contrast, the INTERNAL region of a RMF is the USEFUL one.
    This is because induction motors and alternators DO NOT use the rotating magnetic field lines in the external space (say, outside the cage) for the production of useful work!
    The above definitions ensure that we get the correct direction of the magnetic field in our visualizations and calculations.
    *Point 2*
    How do we choose the CORRECT DIRECTION of the induced (eddy) current *I* (orange arrows) in the CLOSED LOOP of 01:54 ?
    First of all the label North pole of the RMF should be interchanged with the label South pole, so that the magnetic field lines are directed *towards* the "new" North pole (please see the older video, which is correct in this respect: ruclips.net/video/LtJoJBUSe28/видео.htmlm40s&list=PLuUdFsbOK_8qVROrfl2M2WSV2xAz-ABVU&index=21 )
    Then, using our right hand, we _curl our four fingers_ TO the direction of the induced (eddy) current *around* the *loop* , which acts like a solenoid with one turn. Thus, our *thump* shows the perpendicular direction of the NEW secondary magnetic field, which *OPPOSES the RMF* _(ie, its vertical component to the loop)_ *that created it* , at the shown particular instance, according to *Lenz's* law.
    If the current *I* in the loop was taken in the opposite direction, then the induced secondary magnetic field in the loop (use the right hand rule as above) would REINFORCE the RMF that created it, thus leading to a flagrant violation of Lenz's law (violation of energy conservation!)
    In other words, *the current in the loop* _(resulting from the back emf that was created by the RMF)_ *produces a magnetic field, that opposes the* _vertical to the loop_ *RMF* component, *which created it!*
    *Point 3*
    Finally, having determined the shown *correct current direction* in the loop (orange arrow) we use *Lorentz's law* in order to determine the magnetic force direction.
    Since F = q (vXB), we again curl our right hand fingers from vector *v* (current direction) TOWARD the *B* vector of our RMF and thus we correctly obtain the force direction (2 green arrows.)
    That's all there is to it.

    The speed of the turning field (rev. per sec.) is frequency divided by the number of pairs of poles (f/p/2 or 2f/p). The stator can be wound for any number of pairs of poles. So we can have 60 or 30 or 20 or 15 or 12 or 10 or etc turns per sec.

    If I'm not mistaken, the b-field lines at 0:55 are pointing in the wrong direction. It is resolved at 1:01 when the rotor is added. Or maybe there is a reason for this that I am not understanding? But to me the first representation looks like the magnetic field lines are in the wrong direction in relation to the north south placement. Please let me know if I am mistaken! Great video, thanks

    Good morning sir
    I had come to know and build the theory of SCIG( squirrel cage induction generator)
    Plz correct me if I am wrong and I would be "gladfull" full if u make corrections in this
    When we connect the SCIG with 3 ph supply to stator and the rotor is coupled to a prime mover
    The mg field is being produced in the stator and induced in rotor and now the rotor has its mg field
    the rotor is rotated above the synchronous speed i.e -ve slip
    Now the stator will be starting to provide supply to the grid
    And through the process of induction the mg filed is countinue to produce in rotor
    By the help of stator which it's providing supply to grid
    Since mg field is producing in stator and induced in rotor
    And the direction of mg field is reverse and the rotir directoin is reversed when compared to motor ( SCIM)

      I am a huge Tesla fan the man and inventor but while we pay respect to Tesla maybe we should also pay respect to Leonardo Da Vinci. Da Vinci made robots from wood, invented the helicopter, the glider, the submarine, the first diving suit, the parachute and many other things still in use today - like Tesla - he was man ahead of his time.

    Actually electric cars use permanent magnet rotor syncronous motors because they are even more efficient due to the fact that there are no losses in any rotor windings. Also DC motors are both easier and cheaper to speed control wich is why induction motors are mostly used in constant speed applications, only recently have the price on VFDs and high powered brushless DC motors dropped so much they can be concidered affordable for general applications wich is a bit of a shame because since both BLDC and induction motors have no brushes they are whisper quiet and last forever compared to for example universal motors where the brushes both wear out and make the motor loud as a jetplane (this is why hand held power tools, vacuum cleaners and kitchen mixers are so insanley loud compared to for example a stationary drill press and a refrigerator)

      Not quite. Even though some eletric car companies use permanent magnets, The are some that use induction motors. One of them is called Tesla, which is, by a big margin, the biggest eletric car producer. It's allegedly a move to reduce costs, since rare Earth magnets suffered a reasonable boom in price in about 2011, jumping to a ridiculous ~1000% increase (if i recall correctly). That's mainly due to the increase in demand and limited supply.
      Don't get me wrong, Dc brushless motors are currently the most advanced motors. Their permanent magnets however make them a blind shot for high volume, such as eletric cars.
      Now, the reason most applications of induction motors are for constant speed has not much to do with the difficulty to control it ( considering nowadays powerful microcontrollers, and developed power electronics ) which nowadays is basically non-existant.
      The real reason is that induction motors have a small torque at low
      Rpm. Which forces some applications, to make it work at synchronous speed.
      Tesla seems to have found a way to circumvent this disadvantage of induction motors. I'm not really gonna discuss this here.
      It's true dc motors dropped in price . At least the small ones.
      The problem are the magnets.

      As mentioned in the video, induction motors are used in electrical vehicles, which is far from a constant speed application. The new Tesla Roadster 2020 uses a 3 phase 4-pole induction motor.

    BTW, can someone explain me what does he say after 3:45 ? "...the magnetic field will never cut the loop.." I didn't understand that part :( What loop is that?

      The loop he is referring to is the rotor bars, which you can compare to a (thick) loop of wire. At synchronous speed, the magnetic fields generated by the stator and rotor are rotating at the same speed, and thus there is no relative movement between the magnetic field and the rotor bars. Faraday's Law tells us that an Electromotive Force (EMF) will be induced proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux through a closed loop, and as there is no (relative) movement under these conditions there will be no induced EMF (and no torque).

    A three-phase Induction Motor is Self Starting. When the supply is connected to the stator of a three-phase induction motor, a rotating magnetic field is produced, and the rotor begins rotating and the induction motor starts. At the time of starting, the motor slip is unity, and the starting current is very large.

    You cant use an induction motor to generate electric current because there is no permenant magnetic field. You need some kind of excitarion current to induce a magnetic field in the rotor for the moving rotor to produce current in the stator windings. And induction motors are also know as asynchronous motor because it is not synchronous because the rotor speed is less than the rotational magntic field. A synchronous motor which is used in electric vehicels has no slip because the motor speed is the sme ws the frequency or rotation of the magnetin field because it has a permanent magnet inside.

      Electric cars use both. Some use induction motors, some others use permanent magnets síncronous motors.
      On the other hand, there are sincronous motors with different rotor. They can be used as generators. In fact they arr used in wind generators

    I remember going to a store one day and seeing a massive Farris wheel
    This giant wheel was being moved by 4 small motors each about as big as a shoe box
    Seeing that got me thinking
    How can we invent such a motor and not even bat an eye lid when we see it do these amazing things like turn a giant ferries wheel or move an electric car
    When I was there nobody seemed to think about what was moving that wheel
    They just assumed it’s just an electric motor
    That’s what I consider to be the most amazing thing about technology the most amazing things are invented but sooner or later they become so common nobody cares
    Think about that next time you send someone a text on your 1000 dollar smartphone

      Even though Tesla seriously worked on induction machines the credit for the basic invention goes to Ferraris. Tesla used rotating magnetic fields (RMF) created from a two phase system. A two phase system (as well as a three phase system) solves the main problem of a single phase feed which represents itself as strong power pulsation between zero and a max value over time. Two phase and three phase systems are both able to provide a totally smooth power flow from the grid. With that prerequisite, a constant torque over rotation angle becomes possible.
      Tesla seemed to have been stuck(?) to the idea that the rotor must be "connected" with the feed (two phases). His double loop rotor was the reason for a still considerable pulsation of motor torque, see video "Asynchronmaschine nach Tesla" (in German, there are also references linked). It must be mentioned a two phase system could have solved the pulsating torque issue, which was caused by the (double loop) rotor.
      While Ferraris did not have the pulsating rotor torque problem with his massive copper rotor the final solution came from Dolivo-Dobrovolski's invention of the squirrel cage rotor (which fixed Ferraris's drawback of huge magnetizing and eddy currents). At the same time it became clear that the creation of an RMF is better done with three phases (with regard to load on every used wire over transmitted power).
      It is sad to conclude but our nowaday's induction machines do not use invention's from Tesla.

      Tesla spoke about AC current and 2/3 phase system in his first year of college (1875) in Graz but professors laugh on him because by them it was impossible and yes it was until 15 years later Tesla come to the US and proof them.

    btw you failed to mention that an induction motor can't act like a generator unless there's some current (DC) applied on the rotor. Caz it doesn't have a permanent magnet inside

      The induction machine operates as a generator if the rotor speed exceeds the synchronous speed, which is a function of supply frequency and number of windings (poles). However, in generator mode the rotor is energised by a prime-mover i.e mechanical input. Three-phase voltage must still be applied to the stator windings, the rotor consumes reactive power and outputs active power, hence the direction of current flow is reversed compared with motor operation. Trust me I'm solid.

      It helps the Motor to self start. If they were straight it could happen that the Motor won't turn on its own or turn the wrong way.
