At the very least you'll have to know basic Japanese in order to do well here. If you don't know any Japanese, it's going to be an extremely difficult place to live.
In Japanese schools, teachers rarely teach pronunciation I had studied English for 8 years in junior high school, high school, and university general education, but never once learned linking or reduction That is why Japanese people can read English but cannot listen to it
The thing I love most about travelling is jumping head first into the language. I learn basics beforehand then start by going to a cafe or restaurant to order. Then I get directions, it kinda snowballs from there. It can get very awkward but people are lovely most of the time. I would focus on output by getting a tutor or shadowing Japanese native speakers. This is just my approach and opinion though. 🫤 The key would be mustering the courage to initiate conversations even if you're not conversational. :)

In the beginning, I watch a lot of childrens shows to help me with vocabulary and pronunciation, and so in result, I spoke Japanese like a child lol. Can a nonfiction filmmaker put in his two cent. First great video. When I was in Japan for 4 weeks living with my Japanese-American friend and his brother who lives in Tokyo. I found this worked for me. Japanese people are perfectionist so even if they speak some English they will not speak English with an American or someone from the UK. SO BEING a Spanish speaking person. I asked people in Spanish “can you please help me.” I would repeat it. Now what I did was established myself as a Spanish speaking person. This puts Japanese people at ease. Then I say (in English) I can also speak a lil English if that’s better. Most times I get an “YES” and we start speaking in English. I found that Japanese people are more likely to speak with you in English if they think it’s not your first language. I have met people on the street in bars. I was in Japan saying- Sumimasen and pointing, Kudasai and Arigatouuuuu! but it's nice to take a moment to learn that you should be saying Onegaishimasu instead of Kudasai, Arigatou-gozaimasu instead of just Arigato. Other than that - at this point, please use GOOGLE translate at the very least or you may be making ppl have panic attack like the young man in the blue sky and cloud outfit - he was truly nervous. Can a nonfiction filmmaker put in his two cent. First great video. When I was in Japan for 4 weeks living with my Japanese-American friend and his brother who lives in Tokyo. I found this worked for me. Japanese people are perfectionist so even if they speak some English they will not speak English with an American or someone from the UK. SO BEING a Spanish speaking person. I asked people in Spanish “can you please help me.” I would repeat it. Now what I did was established myself as a Spanish speaking person. This puts Japanese people at ease. Then I say (in English) I can also speak a lil English if that’s better. Most times I get an “YES” and we start speaking in English. I found that Japanese people are more likely to speak with you in English if they think it’s not your first language. I have met people on the street in bars.
