Lately, I've noticed that my #SemiFreeFormLocs are thinning towards the ends. This is something that I've had to work through before, in fact, it's one of the first videos I put up on this channel asking for your advice. Now, a little over 3 years into my loc journey with this set I'm experiencing it again and around the same time period too. I'm wondering if this is just my terminal length. Let me know your thoughts in the comments! #LocUpdate #Dreadlocs

Terminal length is real but it doesn’t apply to locs because we retain our shed hair. I think it may be an issue with your maintenance as far as moisture retention goes.

Keisha Charmaine really? I thought it still applies because I’ve seen people have locs over 13 years and it’s at their shoulders and some people only 4 years and it’s down their back. It’s interesting 🤔

Liza Fokes yeah true. At the same time not everyone’s hair will reach the same length. Some locs touch the ground and some the waist even starting at the same length. I’m trying to figure out how this is so since we keep the shedded hair but I haven’t found a definite answer. 🤔

I don't really believe in terminal length but I do believe that sometimes our hair thrives and sometimes it doesn't and it's okay. Your hair is gorgeous, I think it is just doing its thing. We don't really see growth when it's on our own head for some reasons but to me your hair has grown a lot. 💁🏿‍♀️🖤

Terminal length is a real thing. Once the hair in the follicle has reached its full length it sheds and another hair comes in. Everyone has terminal length whether it’s short or long and that plays in genetics

I really do think terminal length exists. I also do not believe it affects how long your locs can get. Bc while your individual hair strands may have a limit to how long they can be, your hair strands (however long or short) will continue to spiral and matte together as new hairs sprout making it so that your locs should continue to gain length unless you cut or damage them. With that said, I have no idea why youd see the ends fraying like that unless your ends (the oldest hair follicles) are just not getting smthg they need to be resistant to breakage. It could be any number of things and Im interested in seeing others' hypotheses.

As it grows longer you can just snip off damaged ends so don’t worry. It will grow longer than your shoulders for sure. This is my first time posting to one of your videos. Hello 🤗!
To address the situation, I don't necessarily believe that natural hair has a "terminal length," but I do believe that there are times throughout the hair journey that the hair stops growing as fast because or diet, mental health, or maintenance. In my own loc journey I had to accept that there are peaks, there are valleys, and there are changes. Hair changes every so often, so maybe that's what's happening. I am no hair expert, and I don't want to spread the wrong information, but I think what would help is a consultation from a licensed loctician. They could tell you what's going on and what steps you need to take to make your hair grow the way you want it to.
I have semi-freeform locs myself (some are pretty thick, some are pretty thin), and I learned a lot by trial, error, and consulting a loctician a few times a year (no more than 3 or 4 times - I prefer to do my hair myself). The loctician noticed things I couldn't, and it really eased my hair anxiety, lol.
But you have gorgeous hair and a great length - just remember to embrace it at every stage. It's all a journey.

I hope to have locs myself but they are a lesson in patience.......I don't have patience, unfortunately. My youngest child has had locs since age 2. Knots work well for repair as does using a crochet hook. I don't think the terminal length is a thing, it's just a matter of breakage management and protein treatments for the hair. Love you Hallease and thanks for the vid!

Could it be the way you wring your locs out when rinsing? I'm aware that it can cause breakage to strands as it stretches. Totally unhelpful, but I disagree with your theory with no alternative theory to offer. It's just that terminal length doesn't makes sense with locs. It would be where your hair reached its max length and falls out... from the root not the end. Even if your hair was too heavy, it would fall from the root not the ends. I think it has to be something friction related.

Just regular daily life always creates wear and tear on locs. Sleeping at night crushes them. Pulling them out of the way when they get caught on things damages them. Washing them creates wear and tear etc. We can get beyond terminal length by trying to save those locs when they weaken. Knotting them up like your doing is ok but sticking a 0.5 mm dred crochet hook in the lock and moving it up and down will rejoin and pull the weak spots back together with the strong part of the loc. The loc will keep it's shape that way. The knots themselves may eventually be uneven weak spots. After 12 years of trial and error, and two sets of locks, I've found this to be a solution. If you use this method, and save every weak lock, you will have locs past your waist. Thicker locs will be stronger too and I tend to loosen each individual loc so that they stay large, soft, puffy and lightweight. I don't like my locs to be hard and unpliable because they break easier. I don't let them truly loc because I like each loc soft and round.

  • @mysskay

It might just be part of the process, wear and tear. Couldnt tell from the old clip how bad the bending was because it looked like your hair was wavy? Or was that the bending? Woud have been nice to see on this set of locs where you hadnt placed knots yet. Im no expert but I would recommend a trim, less manipulation, & protecting the ends 🤷🏾‍♀️ Always appreciate your candour

  • @mldyson313

Honestly, I think it’s part of the process for some of us. I’ve been wearing locs since 2001. I just trimmed them for the first time EVER because so many of the ends had thinned out more than in the past.
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal - but I am a super duper carefree loc wearer, too. What doesn’t bother me, throws some people into a frenzy 🤷🏿‍♀️

I believe in terminal lengths as per the science of black hair and other books, hair a single hair have a lifetime of 7 years. I’m experimenting the same issue than you. I also think that as soon as the hair grows it’s become heavy for itself with the gravity. I believe, in a spiritual sense, that we have to let things go and stop trying to be in control. Just truly trust the process. The weakest part needs to go maybe ....

Actually, now that i remember, I DO recall a guy from work, whose locs were waaay longer than ours (yours and mine) and he too had this problem. When I pointed it out him, he already knew about it and didn't care since he reached a length he was satisfied with. He told me, nonchalantly, "I just let them fall off". And indeed he did. Those little stubs were so disrespected.

I believe that your hair can get really long if you are healthy and take care of it by thinking of it more scientifically. Maybe it just appears like you're at Terminal to you but it is growing to us. Or over the years your hair has been through so much that it is becoming weaker over time and you need to focus more on how to keep Locs stronger and focus on preserving them and protecting them from the Sun and too much water is actually bad. I switched over to aloe vera juice. Preventive maintenance is key and thinking long term effects of styles and techniques.

  • @MsFrisco87
    @MsFrisco87 5 лет назад

The thinning might seem random, but it’s possible it’s a delayed result from something in your regimen. Your hair can also get snagged every once in a while. If you put loc accessories in your hair during the early stages for long periods of time, the jewelry could have caused the issue. If you retwisted a loc too tight a while ago, the result of that might not be evident until later (aka now). You may need more moisture in your hair. Terminal length isn’t really a thing. I just think that shorter hair is more easily managed and longer hair shows you how your regimen is actually working for you, or not. It could be anything, but if you’re just winging it, then it’s hard to pinpoint. Staying on top of moisture is key though. Folks think that just because you have locs, that means you can throw caution to the wind, but locs, in some ways, are more fickle than loose natural hair. Debris can get caught and start breaking the loc down from the inside out, getting hair caught can be more detrimental, keeping moisture in might be more challenging, and on and on....just so,e guesses.

  • @electrogreenchic2012
    @electrogreenchic2012 5 лет назад +1

Locs don't have a terminal length, they're matted hair that we shape. Since this is at the ends of your hair but not specifically one area, I think that it's lack of moisture or moisture retention that are affecting the ends.

I wonder this about my locs too! I have 4c hair and it is sooooo prone to drying-as it is harder for oil to travel down the hair (imo), so I will see little kinky curls fall out in the shower when I wash them. And the ends appear thinner and thinner. I'm trying to moisturize more consistently now. But it may be too late for the ends of my hair. Now my focus will be closer to the roots, to try and keep that hair healthy and moisturized
My locs look very similar to yours, so it's funny that you had a similar thought about length

Hey. I think my pics are doing the same thing as yours. My locs are thicker but I’m having the same issue. I did some research and I suspect it’s a combination of factors. The ends of your hair are the oldest and have probably been exposed to much more friction manipulation and general wear over time, the outer layer just takes a beating. My hair wasn’t the loose natural when I locked but I didn’t trim my ends before locing so they probably weren’t the healthiest to start with. I was also guilty of pulling my hair into ponytails early on when it was probably still too short, and I think the thinning is in the areas where the tight hairband was sitting.I stopped brushing my locs too often now coz I was noticing all these little bits of hair falling down. I also started doing protein treatments on my ends with gelatin and acv followed up with plenty of moisture and deep and conditioning. It seems to have helped coz they feel much stronger. I also have to train myself not to play with my hair too much or tie it too tightly especially when it’s damp. Hope that helps. Your hair looks great either way and I’m sure it will settle! I think it’s just apart of the shedding process that our hair normally goes through but it more easily seen when hair is loose. My first set of locs would do this and it drove me crazy... 2nd set and I’m like “meh” (shrug) lol

Same issue Ive been having. I believe its because the locs are being pulled at night as we sleep tossing & turning. We should wrapped them up at night.

Hey girl! Do you use the creamy, white conditioners after you shampoo? If so, it could be detangling your locs at the end. I had weak spots in my locs from using conditioner. Now I just shampoo and moisturize with rose water and one of my favorite oils. ✌💛🌻

I’m having the same issue and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s dryness and the hair tie I wear for my buns - I wear my locs up a lot and think the hair tie is rubbing and causing breakage. Trying to come up with updo alternatives and I’m working on my moisture routine.

Mine used to do that and i would knot them also. I think we shojldnt do that tho, your follicls may be doing that just to say theirs too much weight distributed within this part, because even when the locs look the same the type of hair may not be in that area or even just that part. It may be course or thick or even too curly which causing stress on that specific area. Also i guess it could just be dry 🤷🏾‍♀️idk. By the way i cut my 6 yo olds 2 years ago and will be starting again very soon.

My hair is doing the same thing. And we started our locs around the same time. I feel like it’s all the “before” hair. The hair that was loose and a different texture. Since loc’n my hair has thickened etc, so that’s my take. And I started knotting the loc on the bottom half as well about 2 mths ago! I feel like in a couple yrs I’ll cut those ends off anyways lol

Nice vid. I think it’s just maintenance, try sleeping with a better hair wrap or more loose styles. Maybe even a better conditioner moisturizing scalp, 🤔 idk whatever to treat it better Nice video tho 👌🏾

Do you think it's because you brush your locs? Because if you leave your hair alone. It will grow no matter what

  • @insanediamonds3332
    @insanediamonds3332 5 лет назад

Terminal length does not apply to those with locs..yes your strands may have a terminal length but those hair will die or break off and still stay within the loc. The hair at the root is lining and will continue to grow. Protect your ends and stay moisturized.

Okay - I'm almost 4 years into my loc journey and they are about the same length as yours but mine are skinnier. And THEY ARE DOING THE SAME THING! I noticed it got really bad after my last braidout (like 4 months ago) so all that I do now is retwist my roots once a month. But the breaking/thinning hasn't stopped... idk what's going on

I don't know how many times I've looked at my locs today I don't know why mine is doing that as well.It bothers me cause I don't retwist or interlock but once a year !!I keep it moisturized but it's getting to me.I freedom mine looks like yours but the thinning there growing but a few a thinning it maybe the dye I do that every 2months I may stop the dye and embrace the grey

I've been wondering the same thing. I don't have locks but my husband does and his locks are doing the same thing at a very similar length. Its only at the ends for him.

Your hair growth is tied to your physical and mental health. I don't want to get too deep but you said your locs "weren't going to stress you" but maybe you shouldn't stress your locs. They look beautiful to me, so go low manipulation for a while and just enjoy the growth that you have now.

I have a similar issue. I have noticed fraying ends and stuff on my Locs, but I do not think it has anything to do with terminal length. I’m not sure that is a real thing. I just have been doing things that haven’t been good for my hair and not putting enough moisture back in. Addressing the problem now but yeah

Question: If this terminal length idea is true, why is it that we see so many more people that have longer hair relative to the amount of years of growth.
I'm mentioning this my hair is about the same length as yours, which is equal to about 2 and a half to three years of growth. Let's see what happens in the next 6 months to a year of growth.

  • @20stacks11

No such thing as terminal length thicker locs Don't show growth do to shrinkage you may think your locs are not growing but just look at past pics and you will see your growth. Ppl use to say that my locs weren't growing and I used to think that they weren't but when I looked at past pictures I saw the truth.

You've probably considered this, but is there a loctician you can consult with? I think Damien Walters (?) is in Houston, or I'm hoping someone closer to you to give an expert opinion. Well wishes.

Could the thinning mean it's locking tighter or breaking off in that area? When I started, my locs were twisted because thats all i knew. There were a couple near my temples that were locking immediately and i thought they were thinning not realizing that as they mature they tighten. It wasnt until i cut them (so I could do the whole shaven outline thing) that I realized how much hair was woven in those locs. So unless u can actually feel and see there is less hair in those "thin" spots, it may just be tightly woven hair.
    ...........or they're falling out 😂😂😂

  • @ChiefBlk

Weird because not thinning at the roots, could it be how you tie your hair up? I could see a tight headband breaking your hair

Thank u sooo much for recommending this video. Since watching this I am making *big* changes.
      1. Moisturizing the lengths of my locs 3 times a week. I use rosewater and orange blossom
      2. Oiling scalp twice a week instead of once.
      3. Wearing headwraps- my hands are in my locs too often! I also use hair ties which I didn't think were tight but they must be as I have weak spots. I will wear them loose for special occasions.
My locs are 2.5 years old and inconsistent lengths throughout cuz I've had to cut weak locs.
      Thanks again !!
