I'm an occasional viewer. I currently live on a sailboat, but spent many days and nights camping, backpacking and hiking. As you can imagine, I'm subscribed to a few sailing channels. Over the past four years, I've had to unsubscribe from quite a few because of their reviews of products. I really appreciate your no agenda and no politics approach. I also appreciate that you'll only review products on your terms and that you're not a sellout. You've just gained a new subscriber!
I have been very, very cold on sailing boats in my time ! When you find you can see light through a fibreglass hull when she heels away from you, you get it. Two sleeping bags and a tube blanket, take off outer clothing , dry seaboot socks, you might even stay warm. My deep condolences to the family of the young man that got it wrong.
I've always included a survival blanket and extra layers for anyone that might be with me. We were going South from the NOC on the AT in the late '80's. The weather went from the 50's and cloudy to rain and then snow before coming out to our ride on HWY 72 in Hiwassee, GA. My hiking buddies got concerned. I encouraged them we had prepared in advance, and we could weather well. I had prepared a list of items to give hikers before taking them with me so they would know what to bring and how to pack. Sometimes our state of mind can overcome our preparations. Anyway, the last night I used up the fire ribbon because I felt we needed the distraction of having a good fire. As we sat around the campfire a friend recounted how he had prayed for the second evening camp site saying he couldn't make it another mile. When we got to the camp it was filled with drunks. My friend said the Lord said. "no buddy you can go another five miles". The next morning our ride took us back to River's End Restaurant for a much-enjoyed meal.
Dont change!! You have saved me huge amounts of money. Most of my kit has been checked By you. Thanks for all you and your wife do for the outdoor community!!
The claim that he started the solo camp thing on youtube, I believe it. I remember my first video I ever saw about this kind of thing years back was Luke going out alone into the dark wilderness and I thought this is the craziest and kinda one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. RUclips has a lot of interesting content, but this is new. He set up lights that were kind of comforting to see as someone outside looking in, but he's still alone in the stinkin dark cold woods, and all the while I'm thinking what kind of lights are those. To this day the products he reviews and recommends are dialed. I'm happy he provides this content still.
I have always been taught you need to regulate the valve on self inflating mats. When you first buy it, unroll it and inflate it. Leave it a few hours. Then, open the valve and roll the mat slowly to force out the air. Once rolled up, close the valve. You have now created a vacuum inside the mat. The hardest bit is inflating it. You open the valve and unroll it slowly. As it unroll, the vacuum socks in the air. The trick is to match the vacuum speed with the roll speed. It just takes some practice. Great video again though
I written you before and never received a reply I live in Florida davenport. I use to camp with my dad he passed in 2016, I miss him so much. We camped every state park and scuba site park in Florida. We enjoyed so much. Bless you for all you do. Joe cowart
@JosephC.Cowart-up4bj I never see him comment on any video 🤷🏻♂️. Not being negative, but there are other RUclipsrs with double and triple the subscribers that respond to comments, but I still watch because I enjoy his videos.
I just love your brutally honest and unsolicited reviews of various products. Big fan here. Been following your channel for years over and over. Probably watched most of your videos three or four times. Keep up the great content and keep them reviews coming.
I’m glad you stick to your platform, I have bought a LOT of gear in my time but I find myself waiting for your reviews on the products that I purchase lately because it’s an honest and practical review and I haven’t gone wrong yet with your reviews! Thank you!
You are completely right about nature punishing mistakes. I just want to say that there are still situations you cannot prepare for. Be as careful as you can and you will probably survive every scenario but preparing for the worst might not save you in extreme conditions. Sometimes you are just unlucky. Poor boy..
Luke, you make camping so effortlessly but only because of your years of experience and painstaking preparation. You are also extremely smart and know when to turn back; you've done that many times. Nature is beautiful but unforgiving.
I tried your tip about using a heating pad while camping in November in NJ/NY in 30° - 39°F temps. It really worked! Hardly used any energy from my Jackery. Thanks!
HI. I am a 71 year old grandma. Hubby and I live in a motorhome half of the year. I love, love, love your content. Integrity is one of the most important attributes. Keep you always. God bless you and your beautiful wife.
There is no need for you to feel remotely responsible for this gentleman's death. Regardless of whether they are recording it or not, a certain kind of folks always have and always will like to go on solo camping trips. Even if RUclips did not exist, he probably would have been out there doing what he loved that night just the same. 💕
Talking about the young guy that died end the weird circumstances, I agree hypothermia was probably a factor. The fact that there was a fall where he broke his nose, it is also possible she had a head injury or a brain bleed. As a paramedic, i've seen some of these and they can take time to manifest. Either one of those factors alone is a recipe for disaster but combined. The poor guy probably didn't have a chance. Thanks for the content, you offer wealth of knowledge and information that I use now that I'm getting back into this stuff!
Thank You Luke...for being with us the night before Thanksgiving...hope it was a good one...love and light to all at this time....Peace on Earth. Enzed
Hiya Luke, you should be very proud of your RUclips channel, I’m sure many people have taken in your experience and knowledge with solo camping, and have taken on board your advice, hats off that man. Cheers from the UK Eddy
I was so happy to see a video out from you today Luke! It's positively freezing 🥶 outside and I'm dreading leaving the house.I love the cabin style tent. If I were to ever get me a tent It would definitely be that kind. Nice cozy campfire and a delicious dinner! Now I'm wanting me a big ole cheeseburger! That means I'm going to end up having to leave the house after all. Great video as always ❤
sherry8894-- you aren't kidding, it's cold today! I was thinking of going shopping today. As I don't drive, I'd have to take the bus. But,when I got the mail, I thought no way!(Was 21 degrees out with a stiff wind, so was actually 9 or 10 degrees out! I stayed in today!!) What's really weird is, it's supposed to be in the 40s with rain on Monday! Then get real cold again! I live in Bay City Mich near the Huron Bay.
i've been watching you ever since I got sick in Japan and had to go back home to my home country and that was 2022! I love how brutally honest and straight-edged you are Luke! And that self high-five with the who did it first was hilarious!
I really appreciate your honest reviews and willingness to share what companies in this space send to you ragardless if its a warranty issue or a review request. Thank you for your dedication to this community.
Luke, it poured up here in New England on Thanksgiving too. Liked the editing with the frames. That outdoor company gave you the best endorsement saying “If we need an honest review,” Strength and Honor!!
All I can say is that I’ve watched countless of your videos, immersing into the feelings you have, enjoying the hamburgers etc. You really make a difference. Your insights on survival, being prepared make so much sense in todays world. I live in Finland, and we have a tradition of being prepared. Watching your videos has inspired me to implement the principles of survival and preparedness into our everyday life, especially to the life we lead on our cottage that is basically in the middle of nowhere. In addition to all that you manage to appear like a true friend on your videos, even we haven’t and probably never will meet… Thank you from the bottom of my heart, friend!
The discussion on marketing really caught my interest. It brought back memories of my international marketing classes. Key phrases were often mentioned because each one had been vetted by “experts” for maximum effect.
I have merino wool under garments and wool socks. I check the weather before I go and also have a Buddy heater. I just got a heating pad too. I prefer to get an electric site and use a heater…boogie. At 65 I camp like this video. Cabin tent, self inflating foam mattress, Ecoflow….❤
Luke, he could have easily fallen, smacked his nose on a rock, developed a epidural bleed and hematoma. Smack your head, your nose on a rock and it’s easy to get a bleed inside your head. I have seen it happen to a healthy, young man, having blood taken for routine tests. He feinted and his head hit the floor. Sometimes it takes a few hours if the bleed is slow. He was taken to surgery and had to have big holes drilled in his skull to relieve the pressure. Been providing healthcare for decades. It happens. It’s incredible how delicate we are in some ways, how resilient we can be other times…from an old veteran, retired in the east Tennessee foothills of the Smokies.
Your real reviews are why most of the camping equipment I have for our family camps were seen here on your channel first. The Naturehike Cape 8, Those LED string lights, The Mr Buddy Heater, the Green Elephant poles, The fire Bellows....the list goes on. Carry on Sir.....
Luke, as much as I appreciate your integrity when it comes to product endorsement and honest reviews I think your style of camping differs from many. Not a bad thing just a different thing. Having the safety net of familiar terrain, a vehicle and an abundance of gear is not something that many campers, myself included enjoy. I respect your opinion and experience with gear, I've purchased and passed on items based on your experience. Just saying that what you do and how you camp differs from many of us who just go out there with good intentions, good knowledge and the best gear we can afford. Sometimes that just isn't enough. I'll continue to watch, listen and learn. Happy Holidays and best of health to you and your family.
TOMOUNT is the real deal! Loved the content. Couldn't agree more that integrity is NOT for sale. Sadly these days there is very little of it. Nice to have a place to camp that doesn't require a reservation, has a thousands rules or is subject to jerks and party animals.....eh?
i've been following TOGR for around 10 years or so ... i have always been a solo camper, well my dog goes too. it seems like the older i get the more i appreciate a good solo camp. have a great holidays and be safe out there.
I believe with the air mat you don't leave the valve open like that. you have to flip it over so it sucks air in but won't let air out. Being halfway like that won't do anything. And I believe if you flip it the other way then it lets air out but won't let air in
With all your collapsible gadgets you should invest in a collapsible rake that way you can rake the leaves away from your fire area. Happy you only give honest reviews.
Its fun to catch a video of yours so close to upload. I'm gonna surely enjoy this content as I do most of your videos. Here's hoping you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. Cheers from Thunder Bay!
I agree 100 % on the The Review on the Product like you said do it the Right way or don’t do it So people get the right idea on the Product your Showing. Also thank you for your Videos You do an amazing job and I love watching every one of them. 🍺🍺
Be careful with that fire my friend! I was a little surprised that you didn't clear away all of the fallen leaves near your fire pit. Glad it all worked out well.
I absolutely love your channel. I am always watching to see new gear and other random items. Not only is what they claim shameful, it's dangerous!! People that don't test their gear and just count on empty promises end up dead. Thank you again. Keep it up
watching this video, i wanted to suggest to you that it would be good to rake the leaves away from where you place the fire pit. Fire safety Is important and you never know when something happens to cause fire embers to ignite leaves on the ground . In that wind, the fire good quickly get away from you.
Luke, great video, as always. I am surprised this tent does not have more of a rain fly to cover the shell and also that you did not set up the usual tarp over the campsite for additional shelter. Great experience, though, thank you for sharing.
Utah Jeff ……I noticed this person who died camping did not have a lot of gear and probably did not research the weather. I have been in -25f weather camping and survived and I did not lose any of the Boy Scouts that were with me. They did enjoy the fire and all the wood I brought. We had snow 25 inches of snow. A 25 f camping trip in Utah in the fall and winter is normal. In many places cell phone service is not available. Like the Scouts say “ Be Prrpared”
The area I live in, there’s a mountain range called the Adirondacks . A man who went climbing about 2 weeks ago is missing and the local authorities have no idea where he is.
Those self-inflating mattresses, if they've been rolled up for a while, take some time to self inflate. A bit like an old man (me) getting up in the morning and the back and knees protest. We get there eventually.

My daughter, who is 100 lbs soaking wet, is a back country hiker in Colorado. She is currently a teacher but is going back to school to get a degree in forestry and wolf research. She will be the first to tell you NEVER go alone. Just too dangerous. She carries bear spray and a machete that she calls “rusty randy,” lol. I have bought her camping equipment from your reviews that she can backpack with. Thank you for keeping it honest!!

That's one good thing about this channel - not many like it in that regard. Living on a sailboat must be great
An ocean going Sailboat?
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
@azclaimjumper Yes, an ocean going sailboat. Reno, huh? I knew some folks up there when I lived in Vegas.
@@jays7318 Most days are until the occasional storm blows in like yesterday. 40 knot winds and heavy rain make for miserable days.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Typo?

Sweating just thinking about it 😂
Don’t worry, it was a cold 53 degrees 😂
Don't know how the 5 got in there, but it's 3.3C. Probably typed 5, then forgot to backspace and added the 3.3C

Happiest of holidays to you and your fam🌻
I love camping on LWM and I always look forward to your videos.

That's a nice looking tent. Kinda reminds me of the bungalow.
This looks like the perfect camping trip! Great food, nice fire, stormy rain at night and a tent that doesn't leak. Happy Holidays. and HUGS
i've been following TOGR for around 10 years or so ... i have always been a solo camper, well my dog goes too. it seems like the older i get the more i appreciate a good solo camp. have a great holidays and be safe out there.

Correct. Operator Error!
I have a similar mattress. The directions say to leave the valve open halfway the same way Luke did here.
Ok, but the photos on the company website say otherwise - one way air out, reverse air in.
With all your collapsible gadgets you should invest in a collapsible rake that way you can rake the leaves away from your fire area. Happy you only give honest reviews.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🦃 great video. Thanks Luke for always being here.
Thank you so much for your honesty
Good
That is a really good idea for a tent. I can see that being a good Family tent for Spring/Summer/Fall.
Thanks for your honest reviews...they are so helpfull
I like the options on that tent. Looks like one I would consider really enjoying.
dang, dude, save yourself a couple miles of walking and park your truck closer when setting up👍😀
Another great video, Luke
You think you were the first channel that did camping outdoors solo? :P Cmon man.
I love the ASMR in this video!
Luke, 8 days then Winter!
I enjoy watching your channel, just keep on doing what you’re doing !!!
Thank you for the video Luke 🇬🇧
Good vid. Thanks . Keep it up Luke.
I really like this tent Luke.
Prayers for the family and friends of this young man🙏🏼 that passed away….
Awesome video like always. Strength and Honor mt friend.
Great stuff my friend! Keep on keeping on!
Loved The Video 😊😊😊
I absolutely love your channel. I am always watching to see new gear and other random items. I am not surprised by that company's reply to you except they spoke the truth in regards to an "honest review ". Thank you for having morals and principles that you stand on. Not only is what they claim shameful, it's dangerous!! People that don't test their gear and just count on empty promises end up dead. Thank you again. Keep it up
Cheers 🎉

You have some very high quality gear
I've only seen 'TheOutdoorGearReview' and Lars from 'Survival-Russia' pay homage to the fallen Storm de Buel. Righteous!
I won't purchase anything camping relates until I've seen u have reviewed it! Keep up the great work sir!💪😎👍
Les Stroud is the original and the GOAT
There were people doing it years before Les.

I like the.looks of that tent, even without seeing how it performs, I'm leaning into it! Thanks for the videos, for the love🥾🥾
The area I live in, there’s a mountain range called the Adirondacks . A man who went climbing about 2 weeks ago is missing and the local authorities have no idea where he is.
That sounds deadly, hopefully he is found.
That pad looks brand new, and if that is brand new then most manufacturers say 24hrs for the first time use and less the more u use it
Those self-inflating mattresses, if they've been rolled up for a while, take some time to self inflate. A bit like an old man (me) getting up in the morning and the back and knees protest. We get there eventually.
New editing choices huh? Love the creativity
Cool intro! I like that tent. Nice having a canopy.
AWESOME VIDEO!
When it comes to the air mattress claim of filling, it's probably when the outside air temperature is warmer.
I have a self inflating mat from REI and if it’s cold it takes forever to inflate and it’s not uncommon to have to manually add air to fully inflate it.
Jeeze that beginning, I thought we were getting a scene from The Full Monty 🤣😂🤣😂
Thank you for sharing this video Luke and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, take care and stay safe and warm ❤🙏👍
Wished you would have dropped the name of the company. But then again, who knows what kind of frivolous litigation that would trigger.
