Mr. Estrin, As an older beginner going on year 2, I really enjoy watching your videos even though they are far beyond my skill level. I strive to play better and your talent is inspirational. Thank you.
Robert, I'd love to see a video about your personal piano journey! Your positivity and passion are so encouraging to me, thank you for your efforts and generosity with us!
I've loved this ballade since I learned it as a kid. Perfect choice for this topic. Great combination of a physics lesson & a piano lesson. Very helpful.
Robert, thank so much for another great technique video. I have been watching your videos for ten plus years and continue to find insight, as well as encouragement from your work that continually inspires me both as a teacher and student. I also thought it was awesome to see you working with my favorite piano magazine, Pianist! I think I will email you later about video ideas, but for now, I mostly just wanted you to know how appreciative of your work that I am! Thank you again!
This is very useful. I'm going through burgmuller at the moment. As an older learner speed is the biggest problem by far. I find it's worth sitting at the piano and practicing what Robert says whilst looking at the video. Usually I watch this videos in my spare time but by the time I get to the piano I have forgotten the tips! I used this exact piece and within 30mins there was an improvement!
I enjoy the videos about your personal experience the most because there are thousands of places to get tips on piano technique, but there is only one Robert Estrin as there is only one of each of us.🙂 And stories are also a great way to learn.
Exaggerated fingers - yup. My piano professor, Dr. David Rostkoski, called it "high fingers," using an analogy of a spider running across the floor. Great video. I plan on showing it to my class piano.
I am still figuring out the technique required to play pianissimo consistently at faster tempos. Depressing every key all the way and slowly makes for consistent sound but it seems I would need to begin executing the "next" note before the "current" note has even sounded. Is my reasoning right on this? Do you have a video that adresses this challenge?
Thanks as always. How about: Pedalling in composers like Brahms & Debussy. Pedalling is marked of course, but often it seems more is required. And...the sostenuto question... :-)
Robert, I appreciate your great advice and positive spirit. Do you have a video or any advice on someone like me who is a sight-reader (advanced intermediate), but unable to play by ear? If I come face to face with a piano (and no sheet music), I unable to play. I feel incompetent, even though I know that sight-reading is still a wonderful talent to possess. Is the secret to really understand key signatures and how chords work? Or is it just how my brain works vs someone who has a good ear? I have been unable to get an answer and I'm really struggling with where to put the effort to be able to play without sheet music too.
In Chopins heroic opus 53 polonaise middle section running base octave bit, you have to use wrist technique. It would be a lot harder to play if you didn’t do this. The further challenge is when the octaves move to E flat from E as this a bit harder to play.
Thank you so much Robert ? This as helped me quit a bit thank you for your vieods god bless you in talking my 1st grade piano grade can you do a videos of a grade exam or like breaking down you know god bless you have a great day or night please respond (: ps I’m talking it in may or I thank so yeah I’m doing quit good on sight reading but not so good at speed or cordial of fights I have a bit of a bad memory seems (: please reasons living piano/robert?.and stage fright thank you.❤️
How do I increase speed if dexterity is not the limiting factor? In Ballade specifically, as I play faster the left and right hands are not quite in sync.
Start by practicing slowly with the metronome. Once you are solid, increase the speed in very small increments making sure the hands are playing together.
Most people only see the white keys on the piano, as it was originally designed around the white tonalities. Look at my patented leverless keyboard. Vids of my partial fully functioning prototype are on my page. Need partners would love to work with you!
Thanks so much Robert, your positive energy is just as helpful as your insight!
You 7u7

Would like to know more about preludes and improvisation concepts.

Terrific intro
You guys hit 100K subscribers. What a milestone. Congrats! Go get that play button :)
Just made a video on hitting $100k subscribers. I am very thankful!
Is this the technique concepts you use to speed up the Revolutionary Etude by Chopin??

I think this is a great question! I myself feel likeisuffer from the exact opposite of your struggle!
Congrats on 100k?
Happy 100K master
I’m an early advanced pianist revisiting Burgmuller because I want to be able to play faster with the right technique to prevent injury.

Lions have trouble in Chopin scherzos where crescendo is written during fast finger work.
2:30 Even more slowly than that!...
Very dangerous to approach this! That's not how you develop speed. This instead will create tension
