It isn’t about looking down upon the rich, it’s about looking down upon bullying. There’s also the fact that the jocks are from families with inherited wealth whereas the nerds are on a path to become rich once the boundaries of the school system, whose social sphere is built around status from insignificant virtues such as athleticism and daddy’s money. You shouldn’t look to become any of these characters. That’s very restricting. You need to smarten up, and borrow the nerds ability to stand strong with your own identity, and learn that when you are in the position of the jock it’s important to treat people with respect even though you have more money, better physique etc. You should never try to fit in with a stereotype when it’s the only thing presented.

As someone who is a Jock and a Nerd I can kind of see the point your trying to make. Where you start is something I take issue with, as you're removing agency. Athleticism is not an insignificant virtue, it takes a lot of work to get that way. To classify jocks as just being from wealthy families and nerds being poor is so far off the mark it taints the better point you make at the end.

@@jasonj4865 I think the problem is that I restrict myself to the movies, and then build up an argument. Jocks and nerds are portrayed differently in the movies than reality, as the movies are built upon stereotypes and use their creative freedom to remove all complexity. To assume one background for these characters, would be like only associating yourself with only one of them, which goes against my point in the end. I agree that jocks come from different backgrounds as well as nerds. When it comes to athleticism, it is not insignificant at all. It’s insignificant to the nerd (he should be healthy, but athleticism isn’t a value for him), and insignificant to building status. But athleticism is an important part of health. The value it has, and the way it builds a foundation for bullying in these movies, makes it insignificant in the context of the movies. If I weren’t talking about these movies I would say something along the lines of you what you said, because you’re obviously aware of the complexity of man

@delvismallory6184 in my experience. Jocks or the people i knew classified in those categories were often people who came from poor sometimes abusive families. Many of them who were my friends tried to use sports like football or basketball as a way to escape poverty. While others used it to train themselves. To avoid being drawn in to the harmful influences around them. While some used it as a way to cope, an escape from their abuse parents. While on the other hand a lot of nerds i knew came from well off families. They weren't rich or high middle class they were just able to afford a lot more things. Most nerds i knew were either socially awkward. Drew alot of anime and played card games. Or were cool and kind people, some who were even in sports teams. And hella brolic. There were jocks who were nerds who played basketball and Yu-Gi-Oh. Well that's my own experience i know there's other peoples experience that are completely different than mine. By assigning people into those roles of jocks and nerds is limiting. They are their own people who were just trying to survive. They all have their own problems, experiences that made them who they are. We don't have to fall into one category, accept the roles we are given. We can make our own. Like videos games we are customizable characters. The difference is our future isn't predetermined by some coding, it's made by us

Yeah that's the point of the jock Vs nerd dynamic. It's not glorifying being weak it's (as even he said) a story of the underdog, hence the weak one becoming strong and conquering thru perseverance.

It makes sense that the nerds are protagonists. Nerds are smarter and most movie writers or directors relate to nerds more or maybe were nerds themselves. In the times when these people were in highschool, nerds were definitely looked down on and made fun of by jocks, so of course movies based on high school will reflect an exaggerated version of this norm. The point isn't valuing the weakness of the nerd, but overcoming adversity. Rooting for the underdog is rooting for someone to overcome difficulty and being strong. Discouraging bullying from the jocks isn't the same as writing off better people instead of learning from what they're successful at. It's not embracing incompetence and weakness, it's praising how nerds or the underdog can overcome adversity

I now and I agree aswell, but the only reason that they show nerds as the protagonist is because many of them are weak, antisocial, asocial, they show us that even a weak antisocial can change himself to fight against people who are strong and very social, it just shows us that no matter how weak you are you can change yourself, if the jock was shown as the protagonist then just think what the story would be, you can't because it's isn't gonna be entertaining or uplifting, we value those who work on themselves to conquer what they want im not saying that jocks don't work on their physic but since they are naturally more social and strong they aren't casted as the main character, whereas nerds are the complete opposite and if they change themselves it will be more appreciated than someone who is naturally more strong and social

We all have different strengths and weaknesses, that's why society works better/can accomplish far more when we work together... in my opinion, of course.

I feel a lot of people missed the point. It's not a nerd versus jock or a smart versus strong. It's the character or personality presented. Most of the time, the protagonist is simply a caring person with morals and the ability to overcome. Shia LaBeouf's character in Transformers, a nerd, can even be compared to Goku, a jock. Both are compassionate about protecting others. Both care deeply about family and bonds outside of blood. Both are willing to accept help from other but prefer to do things on their own terms. Both offer mercy to those who have wronged them. Both hold the previous actors to higher standards than others. Most of all, both dig deep to overcome the obstacles in front of them. They just do their own things in different ways.
TLDR: Be caring but strong, forgive but never forget, and always know that no challenge is too great to overcome.

The richest guys are the nerds though. Nerds in movies are the under dog who uses their greatest strengths (intelligence and will) to climb up. But jocks aren't bad people either but it's easy to make a jock villain because they are in a posistion of power while nerds traditionally aren't, least not as kids. Now these are stereotypes and by now a little outdated but still work well in school settings

  • @iDubstepFan
    @iDubstepFan 11 месяцев назад

I 100000000% agree with this. I remember once upon a time for most of my experience throughout highschool, I was a quiet and very socially awkward nerd type (I say type, because I focused on school, but I wasn’t particularly intelligent or enthusiastic, I just worked hard to try and impress my parents) of kid who despised a lot of the popular guys on the football team who were very popular and good with women to which I built an incel like inferiority complex. Come end of my summer before Gr. 11 I was getting tired of being bored and alone with school all the time (especially because I still didn’t get the grades I wanted even with all the hard work) so I decided, fuck it I was gonna join the football team and see how it panned out. Suffice to say it was the greatest decision of my life, and to see the love and support of guys on the team because my diligence and love for the sport felt like such a humbling uno reverse to what I thought would happened (I thought they would just reject me and make a joke of me because of who I was before that). It was even more humbling than the nerds who always looked down on me for my performance in school whereas the jocks kept encouraging me to work hard and have my back in any situation whereas the nerds didn’t give a single fuck (which is very ironic because the nerds are the “good” guys typically in these movie narratives you mention). Fast forward many years later, I ended playing uni football (started an entire season) where I also met many great people and turned out to be more of a confident social butterfly (on my team, throughout the campus, and other varsity teams) and made a tremendous leap in both my mental and physical health. Had I not joined a football team and become a jock, I’m very certain my life would taken a very dark, resentful, and weak path. Don’t fall for the bullshit stereotypes in movies about jocks and nerds, because the I’ve made much more meaningful and mature relationships from the “asshole” jocks as opposed to the “shy” and “nice” needs that these bullshit movies portray

Sam from transformers is different, he's witty, quick, and very likeable, when you look at a nerd, you think of an unattractive or weak, socially dumb teen, and while Sam is definitely not the jock, he's definitely more in the gray then any one side, plus nostalgia for those movies kicked in a little bit while writing this, but you gotta admit I'm atleast 50% right

My view, is that the jock does not participate in critical thought but has confidence. And the nerd has little or no confidence but always uses critical thought. As they both grow into their selfs, the need gains confidence and also performs critical thought, where the jock maintains his confidence and never has to use critical thought. So I inspire to be the need who learns confidence

I think people like these tropes where the guy gets the girl because in the beginning the guy is portrayed as a weakling. But throughout the story, the guy (hopefully) betters themself through difficult events or simply realizing they need to be better to accomplish what they want. In transformers, it happened to be space robots coming to earth to make Shia LeBeouf’s character more desirable because he wasn’t born to be a winner like the jocks of the story. He earned his win by repeatedly proving himself time and time again. Even though he made mistakes throughout the movies, he always ends up trying to do the right thing and fix his mistakes and learn from them. These are admirable qualities that some people may be born with, but he wasn’t and picked himself up from it.

The nerd doesn’t have to be ugly they just have to be different from the rest. Someone who thinks differently are the ones who go far in life. Those are the rich and successful.

My outlook is even more depressing.
Oftentimes those that were somewhat oppressed grow to be even worse than their previous oppressors as some may grow up learning to explain their suffering to themselves, or even „sanctify” it to ease their pain.
Some may fall to the viewpoint which normalises being oppressive (as plenty of youths naturally are when being in the unchecked stronger position than others and stronger emotional drives, passions and pursuits without the proper baggage of experience)
The brutality of life thusly enables the strong to freely learn how to become more self-restrained, compassionate, chill and gentle towards others, how to basically become less unnecesairly harmful and oppressive, while those who were oppressed by others in their earlier lives might have been getting the opposite type of lessons -learning slowly how to start excercising their own power more freely, yet still lacking the perspective, experience and potential regret for accidentally brought unnecessary harm upon others which they would already otherwise possess.
Basically, those who enjoyed more freedom than others early had more opportunities to see and better understand the consequences of such freedom, while those who didn’t might lack such early perspective and developed sense of responsibility and caution.
The key word is „may” -there obviously is a whole range of non-reflective and uncaring psychopaths that could even double down on such harmful mindsets and spiral further into rationalising their own shittiness, or just have a select group of people towards whom they are not going to be psychopathic against, while still being asshats to enyone else -that is also common.
    Be healthy! 💜

As someone who was tormented DAILY by jocks but technically being one myself (I played field hockey, basketball and softball but was goth and therefore "weird" and playing the flute didn't help either....thanks "American Pie"!) It's about the way jocks treated others. They can be straight up ass holes! My own teammates purposely would not tell me about they stuff they would do the nights before game days so I wouldn't show up! Stuff like the team would have a sleep over at the coaches house and they would all make pizza or spaghetti together for dinner than watch movies. But because I dyed my hair black and painted my nails black and wore Doc Martin's I was deemed the odd one out and never felt like part of the team because of it. But flash forward 2 years after high school and those same bitches that made fun of me were now dying their hair black painting their nails black and wearing Doc Martin's because all that was suddenly fashionable. So yeah if you are or were a jock that hurt others you can piss the hell right off!
