2022 I'm here to learn how to set injector and value thanks 🙏 alot u made me understand what I came here for... How 🙏 🙏 wish i will have the opportunity to learn more from you in your work shop
The old small cam and big cam Cummins are probably the best and most reliable old school engines ever made! Been many times I lost electric power to the engine and had to turn the screw in on the injection pump to get it home.
@@Digginok yes they are. The last one we rebuilt was I believe $900 in parts for an in-frame, which covered pistons, liners, bearings, and all gaskets and seals.
@@clydeacor1911 we are going to try rebuilding the big cam 400 on our water haul truck. I m on the whole internet begging for any helpful advice from those with experience. Cuz we have no experience at all with this ⚓️🐂🙏
I know exactly what you mean! I bent every pushrod on a 504 Cummins. on the wrong stroke and no book. and trying top stop. I was young and dumb. LOL. Thanks for going into detail!
Ahhh yeah, Frank if you could just copy that manual in triplicate, and throw it in the mail to me, that would be great... Hahaha... Sheesh! Are you kidding me. I watched an earlier video you did , I think maybe after a rebuild on this engine. Was as very informative and informative as this one. Wouldn't expect anything less from you. I don't even have a rig like you have, just like watching the work being done. I like that "Paydirt" guy too... I am green with envy you got to meet him in person... Hahaha. Thank you sir. P.S., hope you got on that job you were talking about in your recent live feed earlier. Take care.
Hey brother hope all is well. Just had a quick question for you. I’m running the over head on my 400 and noticed my rocker box o rings may be letting oil out. My box has the Allen head screw in the center. Do I need to remove the Allen screw when I take my boxes off then beat the shaft back to install new o rings? Last thing is do I loosen all rockers on the same head before removing the rocker box? Sorry to bother you and I appreciate you sharing this. Your always my go to guy on here
I believe you got it right, just be sure to get the rocker shaft in the proper position as the oil holes have to line up. My rocker boxes are a bit different than yours. I like to loosen the rocker arms, but it is probably not necessary. Be darn sure to not let a push tube get out of the cam followercup. I did that once and it broke a cam follower off. If you make sure they are in place with a flashlight you should be fine. I would definitely run the overhead after the seals and rocker box gaskets are replaced.
When i set injector & valves i set valve. 014& .023 a mix of old & new i prefer dial indicator on injector , the reason .011 is to tight on intake & .027 on exhaust is too loose. If the exhaust valves tighten up on heavy load, the jake will tighten up first becsuse they are set at .018 so you don't need .027 lash on exhaust& i prefer dial indicator method , the engine always run smoother with dial indicator !! On old small cams with a cam around 1970 & older if you use dial indicator method you should loosen injector & check injector travel with a dial indicator if injector travels more than .170 thousands then you must use torque wrench method or set injector with more travel than the standard .170 by the what the extra travel is.
Correct me if I am wrong but using the dial method on the old small cams 1970 were the injectors set to 72 lbs and the heads had 6 bolts set to 480lbs. The ones that I worked on were the 205 and 220
Wow Frank... that’s a whole lot more complicated than setting the valve lash on my trumpet... and you have five more valves to adjust! Just one question... did you have to use a tuning fork to see if she was sharp or flat afterward?
Good questions, sorry I don’t have solid answers as the odometer currently doesn’t work. I’d guess around total miles since a major rebuild is 500,000 give or take 50,000. Probably 25,000 since the last overhead was done. The reason I did this one was because I replaced the rocker box gasket on the first head. Figure it was a good time to run it again.
@@Digginok Good to know. Got a couple of 855s that are probably in need of the same. One we think is a small cam 350, can't find any identification, and the other is a BC 2 ntc 300. Keep up the good videos.
@@Digginok I'll pull them side by side and compare. The small cam resembles Lil Red's engine. My Bc 2 has a different accessory drive that still has a tag. Thanks for the information Frank.
Hi sir thank you for this video it is very informative,.. Sir I ask some question regarding on how much is the injector torque of a NTA855 bigcam engine. Thanks
6 in/lb. on big cam engines with top stop injectors. You are basically removing the slack out of the rocker arms on the injectors. You can with experience use your fingers until you just get a little friction on the set screw. You will need to use the big cam procedure to do this. Do not use the procedure in this video. The big cam procedure is using IBC or inner base circle process. If you have a engine with STC or Step Timing Control there are 2 procedures. I found the OBC process works best with the STC equipped engines. I believe the last year for the Small Cam engines was around 1978-1979.
@@VHP7044 I have an NTA855 Big Cam with the STC injectors, just wanted to clarify, do you know if i use the procedure in this video to carry out the adjustment?
@@jakeburrows1058 yes use same timing marks , but stc- mvt engines have a bolton pointer that extends toward the driver side about 1" if i remember correctly ( from the pointer casted on timing cover)
Alright a little red overhead, turnt er up to the black Frank........smoke that is, takes care of skeeters and covids. Matter of fact I blame the epa for gettin the air to clean for the kung-flu can prosper lol
Big Cam should have top stop injectors. You will have to use the top stop procedure and set the injectors on the OBC or outer base circle of the cam. Unless you have STC or Step Timing Control
Question, have a 78 ntc 350 small cam i believe, smokes blue like a wildfire, almost clears up when up to temperature and under load ( the blue turns to dark grey). Could a valve set / overhead injector set possibly resolve this or would you start off with fresh injectors..? Seems to me its fuel making the smoke not engine oil..
just what I was looking for. The book had me confused actually. But after seeing the video THEN referencing the book made more sense. appreciate ya.

I definitely like this method better is way more simple even though I have watched this video a few times very good details to thank u
Thanks for watching! This is the preferred method for older non top stop injectors.

I believe that is correct
any chance you could share what the cummins publication # for that manual is. should show that on the back cover

Does this method apply for KTA19? thanks
