As someone who does not go home for the holidays, I get why people of color will not come over for the holidays. It is not us many of them are annoyed by it is our relatives that most force themselves to be around. As a gay with parents who can not accept them I understand.

Guy strikes me as the kind of D&D loser who ONLY wants to do combat and thinks someone like Matt Mercer is bad because Critical Role makes people think D&D is about character stories and adventures instead (rather than the Matt Mercer Effect).
I've said it before but I guarantee this dude has a Critcrab story about him.

To be fair, dnd5e is maybe more combat-focused than dnd4e. People just didn't play it like that (cause dnd5e almost hid it's crucial encounter and rest math by placing it in the dmg) breaking the already quite... poorly designed 5e, so then WotC made OP (if you play the game by dmg) subclasses to buff classes which were unknowingly heavily nerfed (warlock going from 6 spellslots to 2 thanks to lack of short rests) by most of the playerbase.
Tbh, this whole 5e balance situation reminds me of dnd4e, but dnd4e at least was honest about it's mechanics - it was just released in a raw state and then, WotC made essentials line, which, instead of simply having errata'ed and fixed 4e, dumbed down martials and such as if someone at WotC decided that martials were too fun to play... and overall had dumbed down classes. So, instead of fixing the original game, WotC backstabbed it and tried to change it's direction mid-way. The problem wasn't that classes were same-y (they weren't) or that martials were too fun (finally they had something other than simple attack spam to do) - it was the the game was released seemingly unfinished!
Idk, i kinda at this point just don't trust WotC to make good products.
3e/3.5e was popular, but it was a trainwreck of mechanics.
4e was released seemingly unfinished and then backstabbed with essentials player options, meaning only way to get a peak experience out of it is to use fan wikis or track down that huge errata document
5e was broken at the core, but also, thanks to it's lack of clarity, played in a way which made the problems much worse.
And of course, who could forget the OGL? I personally remember the moment when WotC tried to kinda hide behind minorities with that statement about how OGL change was to supposedly protect them amidst the outrage quite clearly.
Idk. I want to eventually try out dnd4e (or maybe 13th age, cause i heard it's very similar, but lower power level and more narrative focused). For now though, pathfinder 2e is what i use when i need to substitute dnd.
Altho... nowadays i play more rp-focused games, like shadowrun or world of darkness. I guess i probably will eventually return to combat-focused games.

Extreme conservatives in the TTRPG crowd always confuses me. Like, my (current) favorite game was made by a Mormon semi-conservative dude (Savage Worlds/Deadlands) and a bunch of people got pissy when they decided "Yeah maybe having the Confederate States of America as a key faction isn't a good idea" (the reason behind it originally is the setting took place during the Civil War) So they pushed the timeline forward a couple years, made it clear "Confederates were bad guys" and moved on with the silly game of cowboys and native folks fighting monsters and steampunk monstrosities in the "Weird West"
To this day people piss and moan about Deadlands becoming woke or something. For people who claim to only want a good game, they sure go to great lengths to justify disliking it. Also everyone should try more TTRPGs, there's a whole world of cool ideas beyond the Wizards of the Coast.
Eh, can't agree. I liked Deadlands better when it was messier. Besides, even the original emphasized that the coming of the Horsemen and the ghost rock debacles shocked the Confederates out of their racist bullshit and got them to realize that it was humans vs evil and treating other humans like they did was stupid.

I didn't mind it when the CSA was a thing, but the whole "scared straight" bit was sort of promoting the idea that "it was just about state's rights" which they sort of wanted to avoid. It did help when they explained why they didn't really care if they got rid of it. It was basically just a holdover from when Deadlands was primarily a wargame and they didn't really have any more things to do with it, so... why not just get rid of the thing that made some players uncomfortable if you don't plan on using it anyways? Plus, I love the Arthurian Legends leaking into the lore. Right now however, my group is in the Faraway system with Deadlands Lost Colony... which actually has monopolized my game nights lol.

And given what we know now, it's hard to view "oh the CSA aren't racist anymore!" as anything other than a colossal whitewashing, which iirc stuff like Deadlands Noir walks back on. Then again I can't stand Deadlands Classic for its metaplot nonsense and the encouragement to sic Stone (i.e. a nearly unkillable zombie outlaw with unerring aim, for folks unfamiliar with the setting) on players who don't want to stay on the author-mandated railroad. Reloaded is better, especially mechanically, but not by much.

As a person who grew up with oldschool D&D, mostly plays OSR titles, loves Conan, Dark Sun, Elric of Melnibone and other sword & sorcery and pulp fantasy stuff, I often find people like this confusing me for one of their own, or for the emergence of queer, leftist, and otherwise non-establishment folks entering the scene as "outsiders" who invade "our" hobby. Frankly it disgusts me. These people disgust me. Truth is that the people celebrating tabletop these days have always been there and have always been the main body of the hobby, they just didn't have the ability to be as vocal as they are today and didn't have the mainstream appeal to carry it as far as it has in recent years. As much as I'd love for people like this to wise up and get over their bigotry, nationalistic obsessions, Reagan-era propaganda brainwashing and narrow-mindedness, I think most of them are going to be leaving this hobby by exiting the census. I only hope I get enough time that I can see the community thrive without these hangers-on in the future.

If there's a female person at the table, she's the designated healbot, but the DM never gives her the kind of RP scenes she'd be interested to play, so when there's RP or planning going on, they have her get food/drinks 😂
I think Shadiversity’s book, Shadow of the Conqueror might be a good example. Ends with a trial for a mass murderer/rapist who is forgiven by his victims and celebrated as a hero for being better and smarter than everybody else. It’s a story Sunglasses up there would probably enjoy.

For right wing gamers, the game is about the vicarious power fantasy. They don't want anything to interfere or distract from that, which is why they get mad when plot, character development, minority representation, or political themes that threaten the status quo get in the way. For marginalized communities on the other hand, the fantasy is in seeing themselves represented, in being able to roleplay as different identities, which is why RPGs tend to be popular among queer gamers.

That's not his money, it's other people's money that was given to him for a specific purpose (funding the TTRPG they want). Deciding to then take that money that was entrusted to you and use it for something else without their consent is not a legitimate use of those funds, even if it's a good cause. Just because you're not using it to buy yourself yachts or something else for your direct personal gain doesn't make it stop being fraud.
I think the best response to anyone who suggests that you spend your money to help others is to spend your money to help someone and then ask the other person to match what you've done in some way. That's assuming you have disposable income, obviously. Show them that we can work to make systemic changes while also doing what we can to help those who will never live to see those systemic changes. I may be biased, though, as I am one of those people who is increasingly in need and will definitely never live to see the systemic changes I support. ;p

I had a lvl 13 group who I hit really hard in my last fight they were in a factory and had to spread out to turn it on turning it on activated the elevator they needed to get to but also caused movement belts they would have to cross and caused fire elementals to endlessly spawn combat can be very exciting if you don’t just have a bunch of people standing still draining each others hitbars.

As much as I know that THAC0 is awful, I've played with it since I was 6, so it feels so normal to me. Now, I mostly play 3.5, but when I DM, I really love running 3-20 epic campaigns, and designing enemies tailored to the party to challenge them specifically without making it feel like they're not powerful. It's such a freeing creative process.
I think the main source with "generational" Racism isn't that there are grandparents who were slave owners but the educational system regarding these things. There is a reason why Germany isn't full of antisemits. And the us back then pushed for educating people in Germany about this. It seems to me that racism in the us just wasn't treated as a problem.

They think we are saying that a white guy got his place because there were no black guys doing it. No. That is not what's being said.
What's being said, is that if they had the same opportunities to get it, they may well be in that place.

I think if you're designing combats using the guidelines available to you in the 5e books, you're not going to be able to make challenging combats, and that's a legit complaint about 5e. You can make difficult and interesting fights, but the DMG and the Monster Manual aren't going to help you do it.
But yeah, Matt Coleville is apparently not cringe politically, although I would say that these takes are milquetoast. They aren't even necessarily leftist, they're just not braindead conservative. A lot of these are minimum to be taken seriously in my mind.
I hope the MCDM rpg becomes this generation"s pathfinder. My favorite edition of d&d was 4e, and Coleville's appreciation of it makes me hopeful about it, but I kinda wish they had come up with some truly different classes. It sounds like while the names are changed to "fury" or "conduit" or whatever, the flavor is still barbarian, cleric, whatever, and it's got the same aesthetics as d&d. If it's the same thing with new mechanics, don't reinvent the wheel in my opinion, just call them bards and clerics and paladins in my opinion.
I liked 5e fine, it's my second favorite edition of d&d, but the funneling into GWM/PAM/sentinel for melee characters and a lot of other gripes have made me wish for something very very different, and the fact that One D&D has promised more of the same rather than revolution makes me hopeful for mcdm.
I'm not an OSR guy, but I can appreciate the odd OSR book or concept. If I were more into OSR I would hate to have this guy associated with it.

I'm nor sure the USA has ever been the greatest country in the world, but I guess it depends how you measure. I think if you were middle-class and white it was a very comfortable place to live in the post-WW2 to 1958 period, but if you were black or poor, not so much. After that the Red Scare started a downturn for most people.
Of course there were a couple of wars the USA got involved in and lost around that time too, so even if you were part of that privileged class you might have been drafted and killed fighting on foreign soil in a war you didn't agree with, so not great for you personally, but still nice for the folks at home enjoying the fruits or your labors, and the ones who could claim bonespurs and dodge the draft.
The USA has been on a downturn in many ways since Reagan came into office, but I feel it has the potential to be a great country, IF we can redistribute wealth a little more evenly, maintain strong infrastructure and regulate industry so we're not poisoning our citizens, treat everyone as fairly as possible with better healthcare, care for the elderly, and stop dumping on people just for being different to ourselves.

Just put people in them. The problem solution is not to build more of a surplus of housing, it is putting people in the houses.
The solution to the housing crisis is decommodifying shelter but landlords will never allow that to happen.

Also, Frog God Games are a treasure of the TTRPG community content-wise. Rapping Athuk is THE BEST MEGA DUNGEON EVER. I had it for 3.5 and Pathfinder 1e, it’s a brilliant accomplishment that they have just further refined over the years. I don’t know if they have said anything shitty that would lead this guy to believe they are on the same side, but if not I say they are absolutely worth supporting.

It's dumb that you need to ether think America is the greatest country on Earth, or you hate America. Both of those seem like wrong choices. I love America but no I don't think its the greatest country, because how can I judge that when I've only ever been to America. I know of other countries, some are clearly worse in every way but a lot of European countries do some things better then the USA. Can't say they are better since I don't live there. I don't have the context.
You can love your country and still recognize its flaws and want them improved. Really I think the notion that the USA is perfect the way it is, or was perfect in the past and there is no way to make the country better, is not a good mindset to have. It stagnates progress.
Here is another problem do they think people in other countries don't also have national pride, that there are not people there who think they live in the greatest country on Earth? Because I am sure there are. But why does the US or any country need to be "The greatest on Earth" national pride is fine but that seems like overkill.
