I find it interesting how the English and Japanese version of the games, Robotnik's response is different. In the English one, he says he'd have done the same thing as his grandfather if he had the chance. In the Japanese, he'd have attempted to stop this if he knew sooner.
It's the same response...
When Eggman said he would have done that long time ago if he had the chance, he means stopping Gerald's colony fall program. A better translation would be "I would've already stopped this if I was able to."
Gerald sounds so done and broken here than he does in english. the way it keeps repeating (plot hole be damned) adds a nice chilling effect to it. the part where the words turn red during the narration of his diary always creeped me out a bit and when he said he "wasn't able to control his thoughts" and went insane was so...*shiver*. then you go back and replay the lost colony stage and feel like there's still a presence somewhere, like his ghost is still haunting the station after all this time.
You gotta love the change in tone from Gerald in his diary to his execution. He turns from a man on the edge of insanity begging someone ANYONE to save him ...to a man whose long since taken that dive and has NOTHING but revenge left. The almost immediate switch in particular @ 4:55 is haunting... Great acting!

このストーリーの詳細を調べて思ったのは、正直に言ってこれは昔の政府が悪い。
確かにコロニーで究極の生命体を産み出す研究プロジェクトが進んでて、脅威となる前にプロジェクトを止めないといけなかったのはわかるけど、だからと言って無関係なマリアや研究員の命まで奪う行為は明らかにおかしい。
それに、下手をすれば人類が滅びかねない恐ろしい研究なのは認めるけど、ジェラルドは何もテロを起こしたくてプロジェクトを進めてたわけじゃなく、体が弱いマリアや同じ境遇の人たちを救いたいが為のプロジェクトであって、悪事を企んでるブラックアームズに対抗し地球を侵略させない為の最終対応策として究極の生命体を産み出し、自分の死後に組織の統率をとる為にシャドウを産み出しただけなわけだから、全てを踏み躙られたジェラルドが復習計画を立てたくなる気持ちもわかる。
政府が潔く罪を認めて真実を隠さなければ、ジェラルドが復讐を考える事態までには発展しなかっただろうと思ってる。
I seriously cannot describe how thankful I am for an accurate translation of this game, awesome job. If you plan to do more in the future I'd love to know what Sonic 06 was originally like story-wise.

@@AtomicBoo Yes. If you have the NA copy of a Sonic game and switch the audio to Japanese, but keep the English subs, it simply uses the same words as the English version.

I disagree. The quote "all of you selfish humans who took everything from me will feel my sadness and despair" really hits harder than the Japanese version. It also helps that Professor Gerald's English dialogue has a wider range of emotions that swing wildly from reserved and quiescent to anguished and enraged. The final dialogue regarding Shadow is delivered with a very sinister tone and helps cement the fact that he's unbalanced. In comparison, his Japanese dialogue is monotone.

I actually liked how Robotnik and his group worked together to stop this threat that was bigger than them. It's something that also happened in the first Sonic Adventure. But really though, it was great to see these 2 sides work together
Not really in the first sonic adventure, he just wanted to kill chaos because it betrayed him.
They sound a lot better when they speak Japanese than English.
Cause the cutscenes were made for Japanese. The English was almost a literal translation that was put onto a piece of paper and given to the VA's to read out loud once and they called it quits there.

She saw the good in a robot, A ROBOT. This game tied her character masterfully, yeah I wish her character did more but with what we can see the she’s the most genuine character in the series and her being head over heels for sonic is just something out of the many thing she is.

Maria is the MVP of this game. Shadow remembered her kindness through those fictitious "revenge" memories implanted by Gerald. And with no chaos emeralds & the biolizard and that destruction program in place there'd be nothing they could've done to stop it
22:25 The English version really screwed with this line. They kept the "he was what he was" bit... but completely omitted that they had already changed the "I am who I am" in the Sonic/Shadow duel to "what you see is what you get", screwing the echo between the lines just like they did with the "stubbornness is my saving grace" line that was also referenced in Heroes.
I'm fine with them making changes to certain lines, but at least keep the script consistent dammit. Even tho you can still kinda get that it was meant to be a callback to that line in English, the different way of phrasing it makes the echo weaker. Sonic should've said "what you saw is what you got. Just a guy who was willing to bet his life to save ours. Shadow the hedgehog".
Let this be a lesson kids: translation isn't easy, no matter what you tackle.
Yeah things like that really highlighted what sonic was truly feeling in this moment. You can interpret that in english too but in the original its way more apparent to why sonic was so hurt from shadow not making it.
It was the first rival he had that truly matched him in a way others just didn't. Shadow had a heart unlike metal sonic, and the speed to keep up unlike knuckles.
It was like Sonic found someone he could finally relate to and just when it seemed they could've kept their little race going as friends, he was gone...
I noticed localization tend to consistently screw up line references/echos. It's like they don't pay much attention (or keep track) to the overall script and thus don't realize nor remember not only what previous lines said, but also their own translation of those lines. It's frustrating since these echos tend to show subtle character writing.
+Blackblur7 It would make me so happy if you did a complete translation of Sonic Adventure 1! The English script is so different compared to the Japanese version because they had to localize and westernize it. They did a good job of mixing the Japanese canon with the Western canon for example the whole Robotnik / Eggman thing. Sonic Adventure 1 is one of my most favorite Sonic games and I always wanted to know what the Japanese script was for a very long time. I just want to thank you so much for taking the time out to make these videos and translate the dialogue. I really enjoy these videos and seeing the differences and similarities in both English and Japanese scripts. I really appreciate your hard work!

Seriously, though, Sonic Adventure is the case of American LOCIALIZIATIAN biting American LOCIALIASATORS in the ass with all this changing name for U.S.A., because they need to get money at least for doing something, so let's change the name because we want so. It's not like it will become SOMEHOW very important lately.
They could at least keep Robotnik as U.S.A. name instead of this sorry "Eggman is his nickname, guys!" and try to change all "Egg" prefixes on "Robo", but they were too lazy.

If to be serious... What the fuck? Sonic had amazing games after SA2. Yes, he had bad ones, but I really hate people who want "series" to be dead. I'm not even talking about only Sonic. Seriously, why a sheer existence of certain series makes you hate them so much? How can you even call yourself a fan in this case? I'm myself don't like direction Sonic games took *cough* Sonic Lost World *cough*, but I'm still hyped for Sonic Mania and Project 2017, because I hold the series and characters dear. If they keep going on, no matter through how many terrible iterations they would go, they will have a chance to be at least enjoying for they own fans. If they will simply die out, they simply disappear in oblivion.

Koji Yusa does a way better job in the Japanese as Shadow then David Humphrey in the English version of this game. Seriously, at 21:19; 21:20-21:24, the Japanese version with Koji Yusa voicing this line is so emotional it makes me want to cry. Too bad they butchered in English when David Humphrey did it, he sounded so emotionless and bored when doing that exact line (and I never understood why so many Sonic fans love David Humphrey as Shadow so much). And they say David Humphrey provided emotion for Shadow...that's very sad for them because Koji Yusa clearly is way more emotional as Shadow compared to David Humphrey.

Very well done, I appreciate that the translation is much more faithful to the original and there was clearly such hard work put into these videos! SA2's translation was decent and accurate for the most part, but was overly literal and really rough around the edges, so to see the original nuance portrayed more accurately here was a treat

They are not accurate dude. They are literally stripped from the english script.
What happened to Maria?
She was killed
She died SOMEHOW. We actually dont know if she was killed by anyone or just collapsed due to the immense stress. Rouges post-game report, printed in JP manual, indicates that the scientists were returned to Earth, not killed. The real reason of closing the ARK was hidden from everyone, only certain GUN personnel and the then-active president knew what happened. Everyone else been told that the ARK had to close due to sudden biohazard and the personnel was evacuated.
If you want to know, then-active president was the one to commission research on ULF from Gerald. There were multiple generations of ULF prototypes, artificial Chaos being one of them, and Biolizard/Shadow being the other.
If you go by ShadowTH, then Gerald and Maria were killed for seemingly conspiring against humanity and working with Black Arms (which Gerald apparently was, he just planned to double-cross Black Doom, and only told Maria and Shadow about how to work the Eclipse cannon and destroy the comet. What makes it more tragic is that Gerald believed he would be found out eventually and along with his (innocent) collegues would suffer the imprisonment, but he was willing to save the planet at whatever cost it took. Unfortunately, it all went far worse than he expected, Maria, not only his beloved granddaughter but also closest friend and confidant, dead. The immense guilt and denial was what drove him insane, I think.)
I know people shit on ShadowTH story but i believe that it fits with SA2 really well. For instance, Maria tells Shadow to give humanity a second chance "in her place". Maria knew about Black Arms and how to work Eclipse cannon, and about black comet arrival, and realizing that someone else has to finish the job, entrusts it to Shadow. I dunno, I have zero issues with ShadowTH.
