- Hello everyone, Drum Tech, Drummer, & Online Educator Kenny Sharretts with a quick hello, and a reminder that if you haven’t already done so please subscribe to my RUclips channel. I’ll also mention that if you like my drum tuning tip vids, and wish to help support my channel please use the Super Thanks button which is now available on my vids to tip for the tips.
Originally this lesson was meant to be a step-by-step drum tuning lesson, but alas some of the step-by-step footage was unusable. Moreover, the instruments I use to document 100% repeatable tunings for my viewers were compromised Hence I no longer had 100% confidence in the pitches I had documented
HOWEVER, since the drum sounds were good, and there was so much useful information in the video I decided to use my good data, and my ears to pretty accurately guess-timate the pitches I used in this video. That way at least drummers like you get a great free lesson that may help all of you find the perfect tuning interval for your bass drums.
Finally while this video demos, and discusses 8 great tuning intervals for a 14” x 22” bass drum, it does not include the note values I used for each tuning interval in the video . The note values are, however, included in the full version of this lesson which you can stream for FREE @ www.kennysharr...
Once there you can also check out my free tuning blogs, videos, and drum lesson charts. Or you can stream step by step drum tuning lessons that give you a wicked set of tuning skills , based on my 23 years of experience tuning drums for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson , Rihanna, Puff Daddy, Elvis Costello, or my current gig w/ Mickey Hart & The Dead! All while helping to support my channel.

Those are some Saweeeet Drums!!! I prefer a 14x22 bass drum they feel soooo good on the foot, but they're hard to find on new drum sets. Everything is 18x22 nowadays... Great video brotha!!!
Best drum tuning vids on RUclips!

Awesome stuff sir thank you
🙏🙏🙏thank you for watching , and for the kind words.
Hey Kenny! Great content as always! I have a similar tuning to the beginning of the vid (C on batter and A on reso). I'm just wondering what kind of muffling was used or any after effects. I'm trying to dial in the same sound when using a mic. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I used an Evans EQ pillow modified to where it just barely touched the front, and back heads. There’s no FX, only EQ.
I use my internal kick mic as a guide. If I tune too high it sounds like a basketball. Just below basketball territory is perfect. If you loosen the heads to just a wrinkle they are toneless and low volume in my opinion.
Agreed. Wrinkles tend to rob the drum of its tone.
Kenny sharts thanks for the video
Sharts!!😂😂😂

HEY i just bought new RL octobans 6 inch14”,16”,18”,20” i have no idea how to tune them in like what key do i use a tune bot HELP
The key is relative. The tones YOU want are what matters. What might work best as a starting point is to Tune the 20” to a medium-low tension/a pitch you like then tune the rest as either a A) the first 4 notes of any scale. For example If the note on the 20 is an F then try F major and ascend via G , A , B flat (A# on the tune bot) or B.) tune in an arpeggio. 1,3,5,8. Again with F as an example you would do F A C F although for that tuning you may get start the 20 a touch lower at an E. Pitches also depend on the thickness of the head. 2 ply will have lower pitches at higher tensions. I hope this guidance helps. If it does please remember to use the Super Thanks button to tip for the tips. If you need more guidance please book a tuning lesson at www.kennysharretts.com/book-lessons
Thank you so much for watching.
Nothing beats a 14x22 kick….pun intended.
Bahahaha 🤗🤗🤗
I really don t why bassdrums grow to 18 or 20inches. A good drumhead should bring the deep tone
That’s why I love this 14” deep drum. Sounds amazing.
