Splendid film, and many happy memories growing up in the Island. This is definitely August 1963. As a sailor, I can date it by the short clip from the ferry in Cowes, passing the mighty Dutch ketch "Stormvogel" which won ocean races all over the world. I did many miles on that fine yacht!
Reminds me of my youth I would have been 12 years old and living in Ryde. It's amazing how you don't appreciate the place of your birth, couldn't wait to leave and move to London in 81. Now I can't wait till lockdown ends so I can go visit the family, haven't been back for four years since my mum died....😢
This was the IOW at its best before the remaining railway lines were closed and the island lost its appeal as unique location to take a holiday. The closure of the island's railway network resulted in many tourists never to return again post 1966.
Great film. Lived on Shanklin Beach front when the pier was there. Remember the trampolines and the 99 Ice-creams. You could buy a beer at he pub if you were under 16 as long as it was a Shandy!! Still got bombed. great times, another era.
Lovely! The sort of holiday film we'd have made had my parents had a cine camera. I remember many of these sights from my first ten years. Particularly the much preferred 'spit n sawdust' version of Blackgang Chine. Before it became a theme park (ugh). Thanks for the quick peek into the past :-)
There's actually been a fourfold increase in the charge since those days. According to the percentage increase in the Retail Price Index, two shillings in 1960 would be worth £2.20 today -- yet the current entrance fee is £8.80!
Agreed. I would have been six and living in Sandown. In the school holidays I would have been on the beach getting a walls ice cream cornet in all probability.
Love the Isle of Wight I've been on countless holidays with my own young family and have always loved it's old world charm, but sadly this seems to be gradually going. Too many ugly new buildings and beautiful old one's not looked after.
wow that old railway bridge over the river Medina is the dual carriageway now I also remember when Blackgang chine had the nice model village and gnome gardens, all gone now
Comments - 3:50 onwards: Carisbrooke Priory - previously St. Dominic's Priory. Built in 1866 this was taken over by the Carisbrooke Priory Trust in 1993. 4:14 - The old pier at Ventnor, the remains of which were finally demolished in May 1993. Then the lovely gardens at Ventnor Esplanade. 4:36 - Great shot looking over towards Steephill Cove. 4.37 - Shanklin (lift on left hand side of picture - still in place today) looking across to Sandown and Culver Down. A quick glimpse of the seafront and war memorial before cutting to the promenade. 5:09 - The beautiful Crab Hotel (now called 'The Crab Inn') in Shanklin Old Village. It still looks the same today. Southern Vectis open top No.45 to Ventnor Town Hall coming through and a handful of old cars it has delayed - wow!!! I think the building on the left is 'Pencil Cottages' - it has sold gifts for a number of years. Shanklin Promenade; War Memorial at Sandown. 5:46 - Atop Blackgang / Gore Cliff looking down the beach towards Chale Bay and Atherfield Point. 6:10 - Blackgang Chine complete with floodlights and model village in those days. All this and the steps / buildings in the ensuing footage have long since perished in landslips. Great footage. 7:52 - Freshwater Bay showing Stag Rock and a *complete* Arch Rock on the left which finally collapsed in October 1992. 8:11 - Great shot from atop Tennyson Down looking towards Compton Bay, etc. 'Stag Rock' in near centre of picture. Tennyson Monument on the down. 8:33 - Shot of Alum Bay from down above The Needles (West High Down). 8:43 - Newport town centre - I guess only the shops have changed. 9:36 - Appears this was filmed at Cowes judging by the backdrop at 10:10. Final scenes probably Portsmouth Harbour. Great footage - by far the best I've seen so far and very good quality!
It's now dawned on me that the 'Star Hotel' at 0:33 is the Star' at Wroxall which crops up again at 0:47 - I thought I recognised it. The little road on the left, just out of picture, leads up to the downs! I guess the opening scene is filmed at Wroxall Station then. I can't make out the station nameplate.
Comments - Beginning - 3:50: The opening shot looks like Newport with the Quay building in the background - other side of bridge. The Star Hotel (think it's Lower Street, St. James' Street, Newport) advertising Burts Beers! Great shot with a No.30 bus to Shanklin coming round the bend. Wow! 0:47 - I'm certain that's the pub on the corner at Wroxall which was being renovated when I was there last April. The following scenes are Wroxall - showing St. John's Church in the background at 0:56. Wroxall station - two years ago I was walking the village and a couple of people asked me where the old railway line was (now a cycle path). 1:49 - Of course, Ryde St. John's Road is still there as the only surviving railway runs from Ryde Pierhead to Shanklin. 2:33 - Carisbrooke Castle and grounds. The scene at 2:21 looks like it might be the main street running to and from the village at the other side of the castle. It is - confirmed by a quick camera pan at 3:44. To be continued.
Yep! Quite a few, actually. If you go to my channel and just type in LITTLE CANADA in the search engine you'll find I've got several myself, one of which I filmed when I was 12, as we used to stay there a lot when I was a kid.

Was born in Newport hospital but lived in Cemetary Road in Binstead and went to the infant school at the top. Moved to Ryde when I was 9 but my mum moved back to Cemetary Road and lived there till she died in 2016. I've now lived away from the Island longer than I lived there. Miss it a lot during these lockdowns, although I think it's sadly lost a lot of it's identity.

Brilliant film brought back such great memories where I was born and brought up
Absolutely brilliant 😁 loved everything every moment. Great photography and amazing views 👍👍👍😃😃😃 Used to live in Ventnor. Magical ❤️ Island 🏝️🏖️.
Great piece of film, well done for buying and sharing it
Good nostalgic video of the Isle of Wight, Solent and Southampton docks, very enjoyable.

Two shillings entrance fee to the Castle! Outrageous! :-) Fantastic film, happy memories of the Isle of Wight.

Lindsey MacFarlane not all good either
Surprising how little it has changed in 60 years

I lived there in the summers of 63 and 64, at atherfield Bay.
It's ironic that the map is followed by shots of Wroxall, which isn't on the map! Oh, well, at least we're in 'The Domesday Book' :-)
I was born on the Isle of Wight at Newport hospital
The hospital in Newport is called St Marys
Like a time machine
Holidayed here around 40 times. No better place in the uk for me.
Post 1962 as there are no buses in St Jame’s Square at Newport. Bus station opened in May of that year.
Useful! Thanks. When I get these films without dates I judge them on the clothes... but then it IS the Island. 😉
I was born on the Island in 1960......funny to think all this was going on then!
