I've been re-watching early NXT with a friend who only recently started watching wrestling, and I realized that most of what I thought about Ascension actually came from Jawnny and Jericho playing them, and not actual NXT.
Jokes aside. The Ascension and early nxt in general proved that wrestling is 90% presentation. Give them a distinct look, a cool entrance, a gimmick they can work with, and have them win a lot. They were tag Champs for almost a full year and remained over the entire time. Them finally losing felt like a big deal. NXT at that point was so easy to watch. An hour a week, clean simple stories, at least one good match, then a takeover every couple months. Yes the crowd was intimate and fully invested in the product so getting over wasn't as easy, but I compare it to PWG. These same fans aren't afraid to not cheer, to not react, and kill a gimmick dead if the performer isn't good enough. it's why it was so compelling as a developmental brand, seeing how the crowd reacted to new talent or a new gimmick, and the. seeing how those young and fresh gimmicks faired against some of the biggest names in indie wrestling. Gushing about old nxt aside, I stand by my first statement. Konor and Victor weren't great in ring or on the mic, but they had presence and were presented well. there last 3 or 4 defensives and the match they lost the belts were good to great matches
I started watching NXT regularly with NXT Arrival when the WWE Network first launched(I had no idea it was on Hulu prior, I thought it was just local Florida stations like FCW was), and the Ascension and Rusev were immediate highlights, as was Baron Corbin for a few months when he came in later(though it was kinda funny when he was over as shit one taping then the next taping everyone was booing and chanting "boring"). The crowd went absolute apeshit for the Ascension in almost every single match I saw them in during their NXT run, and I honestly can't recall either of them ever speaking except to say "TOTAL, ANNI-YAH-LATION!" Was a dope as shit tag team that simply was DOA when called up. :\

I love that Jawnny and Jericho's strategy in these matches is just go full-on batshit and hope that their opponents end up laughing so hard that they fuck up. . . and then proceed to fuck up themselves.
If only I could find a way to get the DLC on the Xbox One version. I had to get it for the 360 back in the day, so naturally, the DLC was bought for that, which is also weird, because I’m sure the DLC was essentially the same across both platforms, so you’d think it would’ve counted.
Never forget that WWE fired The Ascenision (hahaha not wasteland), Sin Cara (greatest GM of all time), and Lou Parper all on the same day. WWE hates memes.
