This is awesome stuff. I've been working on an app that can hide files in images and encrypt them with a password, and extract hidden files (provided you know the password). I'll be releasing it soon
I have all of Shakespeare’s works. But it’s on this weird paper thing and it’s all numbered, ordered and glued to a larger piece of paper with his picture on the front of it.
Good video. My off-the-cuff guess is that the profile pics could have been intended as a distribution method despite not being self-detonating - if they have an accomplice who knows what they're looking for they could download and unzip the executable from their temporary internet files without leaving an obvious trail back to the malware creator.
So basically this is all because of magic bytes. Unzip or any other zip related programs look for magic bytes (first 8 bytes I think) for zip inside a file. When they find it, they extract the zip from there only. Same thing with image viewers and magic bytes of jpg or any other image.... Pretty basic stego! Usually tools like binwalk can extract files inside files using magic bytes!
I expected it to be pretty difficult to hide files in images that way. But it's really that easy?! Just the cat command? I never would have thought of that, thinking "Hmmm, what if I cat a file, and append it to a jpeg image?" Seems like it would return an error. But nope, I guess not!
I assume it works because JPEG file format works from the start forwards while the ZIP file format works from the end backwards. Your image viewing software hits the End-of-Image marker (0xFF, 0xD9) and then stops despite there being more data, and your zip program looks up the offset of each of the compressed files without realising there's more data beyond the first one.
Oh right, images used as zip files... we used to do that all the time on 4chan. Ghost Babel too??? Didn't expect to get such a nostalgia trip from this vid.
Everyday I learn something new! Its honestly kinda cool that you can hide small Easter eggs inside of pictures ( as long as its not malicious of course haha)
