Was thinking the same thing. This is a very cool gardening system but it has to use so much energy. Outside will always be the way to go, this is for city people I believe.
Well if we could install solar panels to provide for the energy and good insulation with optimal water efficiency, I think it would beat outside and rising temperatures.

I got to grow vegetables outdoors on my balcony last year for the first time and it was so exciting to see them grow and produce - and then devastating to see some lost to heatwaves and others to mites or even fungus, following a particularly humid week. Growing indoors in a more sterile environment, reducing or eliminating soil when possible, seems like a better option. The major negative for me then becomes 'light management'.
What makes gardening worthwhile is reaping the fruits of your consistent and strenuous effort. Presumably growing plants on the click of an app wouldn't give that satisfaction. In the end, "Nothing beats mother nature".
Due respect, the app doesn't do the gardening for you. It reminds you of what needs doing and when. Many gardeners keep journals to do the same (including prolific gardeners like "founding fathers" Franklin and Jefferson...Washington. Indeed, they kept quite extensive records, so what's your beef with an app that reminds and lists tasks?
It’s not about the satisfaction, but results. Working adults have limited time and nobody is buying a setup like this to grow daisies but to complement their food intake without rising the groceries bill.
Inflation over 3 years, for this product: $549 -> $799 (+37%) $749 -> $1149 (+42.1%) $949 -> $1449 (+41.7%) Cost sure has increased over the last 3 years, eh. Least there's two colours.
A key important con that comes with aquaculture is that once a plant goes bad it'll infect everything in its system, this is one of the biggest challenge doing this.
If wanting to bring the price down, I would suggest cutting the connectivity. I would be fine checking water levels myself or turning the lights on with a timer, etc. and can’t imagine too many people fussing with remote changes or needing a special app or whatever for reminders.

What about the taste? Although they grew at different rates, and the varieties are probably different, does an indoor garden with artificial light affect the taste of the final product? Also for size, I'm imagining the smaller versions of the indoor unit aren't going to provide much once you harvest; in order to always have fresh greens available you'd need the larger unit to sustain constant growth and harvesting. Great review . My opinion gardening as someone more on a budget would be going for a diy version or an aerogarden or a knockoff aerogarden along with growing outside and in soil. This kit is great for people who have more money .
1. The market for this started with the Arduino Crowd. 2. Then the more resourceful Aquaponic Growers. 3. Now we these Kit gardens, the Home Depot isn't really taking seriously! For this to really take off at those prices, it should come with a fish tank at least!
I think with inflation now, you do have to take into consideration the costs of food. Rise claims a head of lettuce is $6 at the farmers market. Well here in San Francisco, it's $5, but you can grow the same head for $1.50 with seed, electricity, and nutrients. I think it comes down to how much you care about the quality of your food. Yes, I can go to grocery outlet, and buy a head of lettuce for 50 cents. Is it the same? No. I live in a house from the mid 20's, so we have lead in our soil. When that and the fog and cold weather half of the year, it's hard to grow much outdoors here. Lime trees and sometimes strawberries are about all you can grow. This allows me to grow things I could never imagine growing outdoors.
Much cheaper to build your own, and use MasterBlend. The prices for some commercial systems are insane. DWC, NFT, Tower Garden , they are all pretty simple to build and work excellent. Outdoors or indoors in Winter.
Mostly agree. Although the DIY hydroponic systems you see are not exactly compatible with indoor decor. They have ugly PVC pipes and can have loud components. Good if you intend to maximize the harvest and the money invested, and plan to place it in your cellar or shed out of sight. Not so much if you're placing the garden in your living room or kitchen, where these kind of expensive systems come into play.
I mean... You tried to grow lettuce in the summer outside in the South. Of course it didn't do well. It's like asking if ice stays solid longer in an ice chest than it does on a freeway in summer. That doesn't mean that a ice chest is better than Antarctica at keeping things really cold.
a commercially-priced and readily available system that every household can use to grow products year round, all while using sustainable and recyclable materials sounds like one of the best investments you can make. Can gardening and agriculture have the next industrial revolution?
That really depends on where you live and if you think the quality is the same. Yes, I can get a head of lettuce t grocery outlet for 50 cents, but it's $5 at our farmers market. The quality difference is night and day. If you think low quality produces at the same as high quality, then this isn't for you. The pods with the subscription are around $1 per pod. That's not really that bad with food prices today.
Are vegetables better for you in anyway if they are grown outdoors as opposed to indoors? Like sunlight energy as opposed to this light energy? May sounds dumb but idk.
Greenhouses are very common because they create a better environment for plants, which can grow stronger and healthier, which you can continue inside or transfer outside. In areas that don't have perfect conditions, it works well.
I wonder if you can use this for succulents! That'd be awesome... But I'd rather use it to grow some flowers. Gonna talk to my dad to see if I can get one for x mas.. as well as a "Yesteday, Today and Tomorrow" tree.
