You can buy vented foam closer strips for the metal roof that will stop water but still vent properly .
I think I've seen those, although they sure look like they will block some venting. If I see any water I'll for sure put those in.

I use a diamond saw blade for metal, I do lots of metal roofs and it works great

Good job on the storm shelter. Don’t forget to put lap screws over where the sheets lap each other. It happened to me once on a project and we didn’t put the lap screws in and that’s where the wind caught and tore up a sheet or two.
Good point, I have screws close to the laps but am still a bit concerned. I tried lifting the sheet laps up by hand and couldn't.
That make a foam closure to let the ridge breathe and keep water out at same time

Just subscribed to your channel and enjoy your videos of the house build also. I would say you always would want a vapor barrier under a metal roof. You should get yourself a hammer tacker to install the paper or house wrap. No air hose and so much faster..

They sell roll foam that fits the shape of the tin. It sticks onto the tin and the cap sits on it preventing wind-driven rain from going under it

No lol! Luckily that was built before the big lumber boom. Most of the 2x6s were salvaged and used from a tornado damaged pole barn on the property. So there is some irony in the build 😁
It is easier to cut the metal if you turn each sheet up side down and cut it from the back.

That's coming, was waiting for cooler weather. As soon as I get siding and a door on the shelter I'm jumping on other projects.
Funny you say 20 degrees but everything is still green.
After a few frosts it kills it off. But then we go through warm spells often and it comes back. That's Florida
i was always told to put the screws on the peaks on that type of roofing, as putting them on the flat area is where the water will be running
Exactly my thinking and what I've always done, problem is this new roofing does not have a flat spot on the peak. It's rounded over and I was concerned of it not sealing. I can say I see "professionals" installing it all the time on the low flat spots. Food for thought, I'll keep an eye on it.

I cut my metal siding with a fine tooth blade turn backwards in my circular saw. It makes a heck of a racket but gives a good straight cut and handles the ridges as well.

When you were putting the plywood on the sides I hoped that you left it running wild to pour concrete on top. Oh well.
Top is 6 inches thick and solid like the walls. You could park a tractor on that roof.

Thanks for watching! I feel like I should be farther along by now, but man it takes a lot of time building it the way I did. You just don't realize the time and sheer amount of materials involved in such a small space. For example I'm literally 5000 nails and counting with a long ways to go.
That storm shelter is kinda like the pistol I keep in the nightstand. I pray I never need to use it, but I sure sleep better knowing it's there.

You are doing a great job. Shelter looking excellent. Tin shears are awesome but I have found that a tile blade on my circular saw works even better. It doesn’t cause any change in the tin structure. It cuts perfectly. Keep up the fine work and enjoy life, nothing better than “creating”. God bless.
I'll have to try the tile saw blade, I've got a old spare circular saw. Eventually I want to get a specific metal cutting circular saw, just not a need right now. God bless
There’s a seal that is peel and stick that swells to 1” after it is installed then the cap goes over it, it will swell to 1” in about 3 hours
Great Job on the Shelter. Something to consider, would be some heavy duty screen wire over the hole under the ridge cap to keep out bugs and birds. You can install it when your doing the felt paper and then let the roofing go over the screen, just to varmint proof the ridge vent gap you left in the plywood. Just my 2 cents.
Synthetic felt is much stronger, can’t tear it by hand and wind almost can’t tear it, it has to be cut with a utility knife
Great video! Personally, I think the only way you could prevent wind blown rain from getting in the ridge vent on your low sloped roof is to have not put a ridge vent in at all. You're going to have an A/C unit and ventilation conduit. If you want to simulate wind driven rain, turn your garden hose loose and spray it up under your ridge cap. Guarantee that water will make it into the vent. All in all, you'll at least be safe inside the shelter.
Your probably right, I'll keep an eye on it. Very easy to remove the tin and re-engineer if needed.
I would add cable tie downs for the roof. I it is believe FL mandates for wood shelters
I'm adding mobile home/earth augers at the end to hold down the structure. You think that would work? They kept my camper from flipping over in the tornado that hit us

It's good to see you back. My opinion is that the shelter is there to stay, i personally think you have more than enough screws in the tin. I hope you guy's had an awesome holiday.
Yeah I probably went overboard on the screws, more places to leak. Hopefully those screws are as good as they look for sealing. We had an excellent holidays with friends and family, hope yours was great also!

Sitting in the stand now, was 28 degrees when I left this morning. The deer are moving everywhere!

Oh and you might go to a harbor freight if you have one and get a cheap pair of nibblers. They will work better found width ways while the shears that you got will work better for cutting long ways.

The storm shelter is looking great. Not sure if the cutting attachment, you have,, will turn over, but I have mine mounted on a corded drill with the handle upside down, if that makes sense. The handle is not involved with the cut metal then. 👍

Plot twist: Really just a man cave to avoid the lady back at the house!
I've done metal building for years, and when it comes to roof panels, you want something called mastic tape, (which is a clay roll) but your low profile panels will only need a solid bead of silicone, which is very strong once it cures. And I would let it dry a few days to a week, depending on the weather, and still come back to put some sheet metal screws in the highs. Make sure it's a sheet metal screw with the small drill bit on the end of the screw, because the screws you showed us in this video are wood screws. (You can tell these by the point they have on the end, not the drill bit looking point.) by the way, we always double screw the edges when drilling to iron and triple screw the edges for wood along with one in the highs at the lower part of the roof for both.. And instead of putting a bead of caulking at the peak, we always bend the highs up to the height of the top of the high, and add styrofoam weather stripping that sticks down with cheap glue, then we run screws through the ridge cap, to the highs of the sheet. Hope this helps you.... great job taking on the unknowns. I build apartments ground up, all by myself, and tend to stay away from materials or things I have never used before, or at least research installation on RUclips and I always call the manufacturer and they are always glad to fully help you on installing their products.

Why would you not put those extra few screws. It would take few minutes more which could save you from having to replace a roof that peel off
Someone never had the 3 Little Pigs story read to the them as a child. LOL Is it solid, yep looks like it but for an F5 direct impact...hell to the no. No way should you depend on that to save you and family. Have you not seen concrete slabs completely stripped, even of pipes in a major tornado. I have. 12/26/15 Rowlett Area, TX. EF4. Nothing left of a friends house but the slab. No pipes sticking up, nothing. Luckily they were working late and not at home as they had no shelter. Those anchors on yours---nope. Ain't trying to diss you man, don't take it that way. Don't trust wood--if that was the case, all of the testing centers would have already approved it. You got land, just go on and get you one that has been tested, along with the door, please. Blessings.
Did you not hear the part about this being Florida, we simply do not have the atmosphere here for such tornados. Our most common is a ef0 and ef1. This won't have a problem with such storms or hurricanes. If I lived in the Midwest I'd have a underground shelter.

I do know it gets cold on the north side of Florida I've been in Flor ida when it's that cold. The storm shelters coming along real well man. It looking very very nice. It got down to 28 degrees yesterday and it was cold. The humidity here makes our cold bone chilling. I've even seen single digit temperatures here once before and every few years temps get in the teens. North Florida can get colder than people realize. I've seen snow and ice storms in this part of the state too.
@@TKCL man you was colder than we was. Yes I can agree with you people just don't realize how cold it can gets on the North part of Florida. They hear Florida and think the whole entire state is warm. Oh I have seen snow in Florida too at the Florida Welcome Center rest area. I couldn't believe it for a moment I thought I was in New York. Man all of the east coast is cold. Had a man said to me yesterday don't you think it's lil cold to wear flip-flops right now? I said if you hanging outside yes. I know you staying warm with that fire 🔥.
I put my flip flops up this week 😁. Had a nice big fire last night
@@TKCL yeah I wear mine all year round. I still wearing them because I'm just driving all day for 11 hours every day and just don't see dirty a pair of socks just to drive. But I do have my shoes with me for when I have to wear them as certain location. I know that fire 🔥 felt good last night.

After a Major hurricane last year and multiple times using it for sever weather and tornadoes, it hasn't budged.
Should have bought the screws with an "O" ring to atop leakage. Duh , ha ha tourista.
You don't see very well, those are roofing screws with a seal washer.
Way too drawn out. Simplify and you'll get more views. Less talk, condense construction.
On another note, I suggest you make your shelter (well it's too late for you) 5 foot max height so it will be less a target in the tornadic wind. You go into a shelter to survive not live. You stoop down and sit on a chair or bench. This high will be leverage for toppling the entire structure.
This is Florida, main use is overnight stay during a hurricane. I'll take the comfort.
