Why not ban anyone born after 2010 from being given socialist material?
Everyone born after 2010 from being propagandized to become vegetarian?
Everyone born after 2010 from being able to access any internet systems not made for education or work?

Did they consider at all what this does to tourism? Do they think smokers will come to the UK as tourists if they're not allowed to buy any tobacco? I'm guessing they won't be allowed to import cigarettes either? Do they think smokers will quit smoking just to visit the UK?

  • @FatNorthernBigot

Personally, I don't believe any substance should be banned, whether it's tobacco or heroin. I'm a believer in personal responsibility and prohibition creates criminal networks, not sobriety. I do not condone cigarettes or narcotics I just think a government naughty list is both pointless and potentially harmful.

I agree. However, just because something is legal it does not mean there will not be any criminal network also selling the same product(s). Typically when something 'controversial' is legalized it is heavily taxed and heavily regulated which opens the door to a 'black market'. Also, in the US at least, legal (on the state level) dispensaries find it extremely difficult or impossible to operate within the traditional banking framework and that creates a host of problems. Gov't needs to get all the way out of it for legalization to be meaningful.....and they never will. There is far too much potential revenue at stake.

I'm from the left but agree with Spiked on this. Britain is a highly puritanical country now. You miss out the class aspect to this though. Even Chomsky once commented that if it was the middle class doing all the smoking there would be no bans and also pointed to the hypocrisy in their alcohol use. There has always been a puritanical aspect to the left that Orwell criticised in the essays and Road to Wigan Pier that isn't in the proles that Orwell saw freedom in. Although Sunak has brought this law in its origins are more from the authoritarian liberal 'left' and puritanical socialists. Merry England is dead and it died a long time ago.

We have gone stark raving mad. Jasmin Alibi-Brown, the most annoying person on TV said opined on air that drinking alcohol was obnoxious and should banned. Sunak is finished as a prime minister in any case and has taken his party into oblivion for at least a generation. Anyway what dies he care, he’s had a Green Card in his pocket for a while and a lucrative position in the US awaits with such as JP Morgan or Goldman Sachs. 😂

In 2016, it was estimated that the NHS spent £2.6 billion on smoking related healthcare. What is freedom for the smoker, means lack of freedom for non smokers for treatments where there could be on a long waiting list for non-smoking illnesses, due to lack of funds. I am an ex smoker.

Using healthcare costs as an argument leads to extremely dangerous slippery slope, as then sky is the limit in what government could and would control. Would you like government mandated/regulated diet, exercise, consumables, sleeping times and condition? Everything we do in life affects health one way or another, so giving away freedom and making government responsible for our health would lead to unprecedented tyranny.
