The equipment is only half of the solution. It was the heart and grit of the Ukrainian people that even made it possible. Look at Afghanistan, literally stone aged to top 20th most geared military over night and still fell within weeks. An ally like the Ukrainian would be irreplaceable in Europe in the future. Ukraine has shown that they were clearly the backbone of the Soviet back in the day.

Although i do agree with you. We can’t compare a country with no real fighting spirit and Taliban caves people to Ukraine. The issue with Afghanistan was the sheer incompetence of our willingness to accept that country was never going to change for us. All the Taliban had to do was sit back in caves and have the support of toxic islamic values within much of their society to sit that one out. It’s not like the Taliban actually went head to head with the US military realistically at any point. They only waited for them to leave which is quite the different situation from Ukraines willingness to fight alone. Afghanistan has good willed people and many, but it was never enough to change a whole culture to “western values”

Indeed, it is all about the determined support of the people. Because we all know what happens when the USA supports a regime that has only luke warm support of the people, there will be luke warm support of the soldiers - put too much pressure on them and they cave, case in point, Afghanistan!. Soldiers will not fight in a very determined way for a regime they are only luke warm about,,,, or a cause they are only luke warm about - i am sure this is a reality Putin is finding out about with his own forces, because they don't want to be in Ukraine dying for what?... but there is a flip side to this the world needs to keep in mind, because, depending on how events unfold if at any point the average Russian soldier believed their nation was imperiled, your going to see an entirely different animal, capable of feats that we don't want to think about if we are to sleep well at night.

I was in the MLRS in the eighties and early nineties. We knew we were in a world class unit. But I had no real idea how good our stuff was. Of course that was early models. Not as well guided but we were fearsome for the time. We trained at least half my time in the army in the "shoot and scoot" tactics. We thought we might have to face the Russian hordes in the Fulda Gap. Now the Ukrainians are the brave ones to show the Russians what they would of been up against. Gridsmashers!!!
But honestly after the Berlin wall fell and I was there to see the East Germans drive into Germany in their little trabbies and we passed them on the German autobahn driving back from Grafenwohr I had dreams that Russia might someday become an ally of America. What couldnt America and Russia have not achieved if we had become partners. We had a brief moment in the early 90's where I think something amazing could of happened. IF Russia and America could of had a little courage maybe we could of brought Russia into something like Nato. I cant blame Russia totally. I think somewhere American diplomacy failed. Maybe if we had offered the Russians a new Marshall plan we could of helped them avoid the Oligarchs. I dont know. I feel a wonderful chance was lost.

Using the tactics of the Minutemen from the American Revolutionary War, the Ukrainians are using the HIMARS from concealment and moving on before they are targeted. A little bit we call shoot, move, and communicate. It seems the Russians total incompetence stems from a lack of real care about it's soldiers.
Based on both results and information from both sides it is easy to conclude that Russia though to win this war like it did in turning the tables on Germany in WW2, via sheer numbers and a willingness to sacrifice any number of soldiers to win each engagement.
But even the WW2 turnaround was not a real success, Russia was receiving military aid from allied nations and the Germans were fighting on multiple fronts. Defending Russia was easier because German forces were overstretched and had supply issues as well as weather conditions to deal with. All of this meant that the Germans basically were already in retreat before the Russians actually made their first real victories.
So in the situation with Ukraine, it is easy to see Russia does not have the terrain advantage it does not have the international support and it can't simply keep sending troops until it wins as eventually the population will decide that the cost in lives was not worth the gains (much easier is WW2 when it was a case of do or die in defence of the homeland).
Russia is on a quick path to losing the war unless sit manages to gain official support from nations like china and declare official war against Ukraine with a renewed invading army, but even then it would require western nations backing down from their support and open ignorance of outside help for Russia.
PS: The support of the US/West has really turned the tide of the war, yet it can still be pointed out that the initial response was apparently slow compared to the amount of time the world had to prepare a unified response to stop the attack from evening happening.

They do all sorts of things mid-flight like burning excess fuel or performing a G maneuver to gain range on an enemy.
The reason it's not a ballistic missile is because the U.S. Air Force has exclusive rights to manufacture and manage ALL ballistic missiles in the US. ATACMS is an ARMY project, so yeah, it's a maneuvering missile, not a ballistic.

while everyone in the West is focused on equipment as the solution i would like to note that most of the western HIMARS and other advanced systems provided by NATO allie's is actually located in the southern axis: proven by continuous attacks on Crimean bases and such. The main equipment that was used in the Kharkiv offensive by Ukrainians was indeed soviet era military tech. I find it distasteful that every western media outlet uses the reasoning of "NATO equipment" as the sole reason the Ukrainians were able to push the Russian occupiers back. Ukrainian army, its commanders, and their soldiers are battle-hardened, strong-willed, EXTREMELY intelligent in their counteroffensive plans. The level of reconnaissance and preparation combined with the autonomy of Ukrainian commanders is the major reason why the UAF was so successful.

I don't many people are discounting the grit, capability and strong will to fight of the Ukraine military and people that have taken up arms. Ukraine would have fallen quickly if this were not the case. Instead I believe most are just trying to point out that the addition of very capable western military weapon systems are tipping the balance in Ukraine's favor against an invading army that outnumbers them.

As far as we know there is at least one HIMARS in Kharkiv. But you are right the discipline, strength and courage of the Ukrainian forces made it all work. GMLRS rockets can help prepare the battlefield, but the Ukrainians still had to go and fight on it. Oh and the Soviets/Russians have been trying to prevent the US from developing Smart artillery Rocket systems since the 1970's by trying to get them banded by disbarment treaties. I think we now know why.

Cool thing about HIMARS is USMC was able to use an F-35 and its sensors to detect targets on the ground and then send the targeting data via data link straight into HIMARS so that it could destroy the targets.

If I am not mistaken, the Ukrainians are doing basically the same thing using drones rather than manned aircraft, so they aren't using just US military intelligence for targeting.

You have all the right to free your lands --- You have all the rights to live in harmony with other nations and be able to choose your leaders in a democratic form of government. I just wanna take a moment. Up to this point in my life, anytime I watched a youtube video discussing topics like these, it's always been "in history" as in, this happened "before". This is happening now, well in the last couple of weeks. And it's so surreal to me to get detailed knowledge of war and their casualties, while I'm sitting home in safety complaining about the rising price of electricity...
