    By Marc Schlossman
Extinction explores endangered and extinct species and the factors threatening them through a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of the most important sets of natural history collections
    in the world.
This collection of images began as a father’s trip to the museum with his sons a decade and a half ago. Upon opening a drawer containing an astonishing set of bird specimens, some of which were extinct species, photographer Marc Schlossman had an overpowering thought that at that moment these animals were gone. Forever. The last chance to see them was here, right now, in his hands. Holding those extinct birds gave rise to a series of questions that underpin this project: why is biodiversity loss happening so fast; is it too late; and what can be done?
Through Schlossman’s revealing and unique photographs of specimens from the Field Museum in Chicago, and informative and insightful text about the species themselves, he explores the reasons for their decline and the conservation efforts in place to prevent further extinction. The specimens revealed in this book are not on public display and the only way to see many of them is through these photographs, the result of ten years documenting key species from the museum’s zoology and botany collections. The images lead the reader to the species’ stories, promoting a greater understanding of mankind’s stewardship of life on Earth at a critical time in history. The accelerating loss of biodiversity threatens the connections between, and future of, all forms of life - and we should not forget this means us too.
The animals in this book are either extinct, or are on the verge of extinction. The conservation success stories highlight the positive work to prevent the extinction of these and other species. This is an insightful and timely collection that serves as a warning, but one that will inspire hope for the future.
