The Eduardo Alessandro Studios featured exhibition for April is a retrospective exhibition looking back at the work of Kincardineshire based painter Lil Neilson who died 20 years ago at the age of 60.
Lil Neilson- Remembering a Catterline Artist, is an intimate collection of work brought together over many years by close friends of the artist, and being offered for sale for the first time.
Lil studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1956-60, including a summer school at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. She completed a post-diploma year tutored by Hugh Crawford and Alberto Morrocco in 1960-61 and was awarded a travelling scholarship to France and Italy in 1961-62, before being drawn to the coastal village of Catterline near Stonehaven through her association with Joan Eardley.
The exhibition features examples of her early Eardley influenced works through to the powerful introspective pieces produced in her final years.

Just saw this video. TY. I knew Lil in Paris, 1962. We hitched hiked with a Scot named Elliott to Chatres during that Easter. When the youth hostal was full we decided to sleep in the cathedral. Which we did, staying hidden behind wall hangings after the midnight mass that Sunday morning. It was a cold stone floor, however.

A pleasure to see more of the artist's work and catch a glimpse of her and her inspirational Catterline. Music soothed and complemented the visuals. Glad to have discovered this little gem.

Thank you so much for this brilliant overview of Lil's work. The painting entitled "Where are we in this?" was particularly poignant in these insane dystopian times. Lil always said 1984 had been established way back in human history. She knew a lot and she was right...Hope she's having a happier time on whatever planet she is from!

This was an excellent show. I hope the gallery pulls through and comes back to full strength.
