    2nd video I've seen on this subject and this explanation is far superior. I now have a basic understanding of how GPS coordinates work. One thing I noticed, the face of the earth in 2 dimensions represents 180 degrees which is half of 360 degree circle. Makes sense, however, when looking for a point close to 90 W Longitude the starting point is not the edge of the earth, rather it is the prime meridian which is, I'm guessing about 20 degrees from said edge of the earth. It would have been possible to place the prime meridian on the edge merely by moving the point of reference over those 20 or so degrees and I believe would have made this video even better and easier to understand. (Could be wrong though) Cheers

    So at 4:14 the formula you displayed resulted in the coordinates 43.095194. Below that you rounded it down to 43.09. Don't your normally round up when when the last digit is a 5?. Shouldn't it have been "43.10" (or 43.1)?

    0.33 -0.38 .. he says that lattitude represents north/south while longitude is east/west . I was under the impression that the very opposite is true 🤔

    • @williamgourley5613
      @williamgourley5613 4 года назад +15

      What you didn't catch is the word "Location" after he said that. Think of it like this: Lines of latitude measure north-south (position) between the poles. Although lines of longitude, or "meridians" run between the North and South Poles, they measure east-west position or "location" on the globe. Hope that makes sense:)

    • @stephenkosciesza2706
      @stephenkosciesza2706 Год назад

      The lines of latitude run east/west. So to go from one line of latitude to another, you travel north/south. Lines of longitude run north/south. So to go from one to another, you go east/west.

    Hey, please help me to straighten this thing out.
    So... the degree for latitude is never more than 90° and for longitude is never mora than 180°, is my understanding right?
    Since it is explained with N / S for side of hemisphere and W / E for in which side of prime meridian line. Correct?

  • @HailAnts
    @HailAnts Год назад +1

    Another thing to remember is that longitude are all great circles. They all travel in perfectly straight lines. Latitude however are not straight lines (except the equator).
    If you follow them on the Earth's surface you are always traveling in a curve veering in either a northerly or southerly direction..

  • @JL-qe5gl
    @JL-qe5gl 6 месяцев назад

    A common method for writing coordinates without using N, S, E, or W is by using + and - to denote direction from the equator or the prime meridian; for example latitude north of the equator is + and south is -, from +90 to -90, longitude is + to the east and - to the west, in the range from 0 to +/- 180 (international date line).

      Haha :D Ok. I get why so confused. I used browser to pick my spot and by dragging the Street View icon on the area I got A LOT of blue streets to pick from and most were wintery af. I had viewable streets that are not even visible on the normal map at all. The coordinates I picked were just smack bang in the middle of the village. I tried to see how it works on mobile and got instantly dropped to summer forest... So if you're on mobile (or using something else), it might take a bit of work to find the wintery bits.

    GPS coordinates do not work like this, you've explained latlong which has nothing to do with GPS coordinates. Furthermore on land navigation is don mostly by coordinates and not by latlong which are two different things. First a geological date is used like WGS84 combined with a grid system like UTM an for military purposes the MGRS is added.

    They are NOT GPS coordinates; that's a misnomer. They are geographical coordinates, given in longitude and latitude. GPS is a high-tech system for determining longitude and latitude; it depends on a system of artificial satellites and computer technology, and can't exist without them. The first efforts at any kind of GPS date from the 1960s. Longitude and latitude, on the other hand, have been around for centuries.

    if you're still here, can you do an episode on why we hear those high-pitched sounds outside when the sun is out? Other people think I'm insane, and I don't know how to better explain it.

    How are the coordinates fixed? Is there any ground station to remember that this point is such & such?

    • @royeb63
      @royeb63 4 года назад

      The coordinates are lines drawn on a globe or map. Put there more than 2000 years ago.
      The GPS just helps you determine where you are in relation to that coordinate system.
