      I thought that Dr Scott was very high on the Autism/Aspergers Ladder (as it were) - but then again I am surrounded by peeps who have autism ... hubby, daughter, son, niece, sister in law, and others who have strong autistic traits. I think many of the human population - even perhaps all - have autistic traits in one form or another, and in different/varying amounts - even down to those who we refer to as ''neurotypical''. I embrace it and try to see the good points of how it affects folk, while being aware of the negative issues.
      As humans we are all beautifully different - and it would be a boring world if we weren't .

      Hi Dr Scott. I loved hearing about you. We already knew you’re a very kind soul who absolutely loves animals! Me too! Sometimes I definitely prefer animals to people! When I stop and pet dogs on the street, they definitely know a sucker when they see one. No matter how old they are, I tell them they’re sweet puppies. Some actually brighten up even more when I say it. I swear they understand. I have a 12 year old cat who hates to be picked up. Is terrified of people coming in. She’ll belly run to hiding spots. I’ve noticed since Covid, she doesn’t come out to see whose come over. Pre-Covid, she’d come out stare at them, then go up and sniff their feet and do the open mouth smell after. That cracks me up even when she smells herself. She loves bum spanking. Weird cat! She’s the only cat I’ve allowed to sit on my end table. I use TV tray for my junk so she has space. I always say…she’s assumed the position so I can spank her. I can leave the room, come back a few minutes later and she’s still there! Chloe will be my last pet as I’m 70 now and even She might outlive me. 😻😻
      Anyhow, you were saying you might do some international travel with pet rescue. It would be exciting to see you come here to Victoria British Columbia Canada. We’re on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, (not to be confused with Vancouver BC). Victoria is the capital city of our province of British Columbia aka BC. Always loved your shows. ❤️😊🇨🇦

    I think we have a misconception that autism diminishes empathy but you seem to disprove that. ❤❤❤

    • @SweDaneDragon
      @SweDaneDragon 4 месяца назад +44

      Autists are absolutely capable of empathy. But it doesn't come as natural as for neurotypicals. It must be learned in some ways. Once the code is cracked, autists can even be too empathetic at times, as limits also can be hard.

    • @robynpicknell7801
      @robynpicknell7801 4 месяца назад +88

      Those with autism actually have a tendency to be overly empathetic rather than no empathy. In fact, it is that empathy that can be so incredibly overwhelming for them and lead to a meltdown or overstimulation. For some with autism they can find it difficult to even identify the emotions that they feel, thus making it so much more frustrating to communicate with other neuro-typical people. I know that these are a couple of the things that I struggle with, and I am actually considered to be a high functioning individual on the autistic spectrum.

    • @Abi-Grey8

      I am 65 and an autistic empath. We only seem to not have empathy, because our cues are different than others. I suffer daily, because I am too empathetic. I have learned to turn it off some, in order to survive. This is what autistic folks must do or our increased empathy debilitates us. We are in fact just the opposite dear.

    • @scottfw7169
      @scottfw7169 4 месяца назад +24

      The researched and documented reality is less that autism diminishes empathy and more that autistic people & neurotypical people tend to DO empathy differently, frequently _Very_ differently.

      Given who I personally have around me - who have autism et al - are more likely to be open and honest - again only referring to those who I personally know - their whole demeanour is "say/do it as it is" - honesty because why wouldn't I want to be any other way. I do, however, know that there is a small percentage of folk who I know, whether related to or not, who have been ''taken over'' by the negative side of the coin and are devious and maybe even narcissistic - however even those small number of folk have elements of honesty/deviousness in varying proportions.

    Keep up the wonderful work and I'll keep watching from the US.

      Animals are the best in general. My cats don't know or care that other humans find me weird. They get their food, water, clean litter-boxes, and all the cuddles and attention they want because they are straight-forward enough to ask for it. If you wait for me to come to you… it'll never happen. I'm great at responding to your needs when you spell them out, so I will happily dote on anything confident enough to yell at me if the breakfast is one minute late 😅

    We’ve just returned back to the States from Australia, and my Aussie husband had that same expression and tone to his voice when talking about Australia being his home, this is just his second home. I’m not sure folks can really understand how hard it is for Aussies to live away from Australia, even when it’s fully voluntary. It’s a really special place with a very different culture from America, Britain, and other places. ❤🇦🇺

    I am a 70 year old grandma in California. I had a heart dog for 14 years. He was rescued from a kill shelter because of a deformity. He was 4. He lived the rest of his 18 years with me. I see so many things during the behavioral videos that explained his behavior. He didn't know toys or treats. I had to teach him. Thank you for showing the time and patience to allow them to learn to love and feel safe.
    I am saddened about your family situation but know that co-parenting works. It is an adjustment for everyone but the foundation of the family is still strong and healthy. Bless you all and bless the animals. 12:59

    My grandson is almost 4 and was diagnosed with Autism - he has been nonverbal, but is starting to talk. He goes to pre-school 4 days a week and to an Autism center for therapy 6 hours a day (5 days a week). He is so loving and sweet, hilarious, dramatic (acts out shows), and very hyper, but on the other end he screams when he doesn't get his way or throws things - since he has been in therapy (almost a month) these behaviors have been less. He knows when people are upset, by reading facial cues. Just wanted to share my experience - I am helping to raise him so I see him everyday. Autism is a wide spectrum that a lot of people don't understand (from highly gifted to very love cognitive). I have a Master's degree in Special Education and taught school for 20 years. I have had students on both ends of the spectrum. I love this channel because you and the rescues you are involved in.

      You are the vet everybody dream for their pets.
      People don't realise there is different spectrums of autism. I live in France and have been a fan since vets on the Hill. In France, you would not dare saying you are autistic. I am bipolar and i know if people find out they would change pavement.
      I also could see how hurt you were when you mention you current family situation. Remember? There is 50000 who love and follow you. I care about you for the person you are nice, genuine and who loves his patients.

      @@Montyboo I'm sorry to hear they have such a limited understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health disorders in France. I for one don't think any less of you for being bipolar, rather it makes me understand that you are probably stronger than the average person if you manage a mental illness on top of all the other stuff we regularly have to manage in our lives.

    I have discovered that I am on the autism spectrum but only figured it out at the age of 57 and am 60 now. One of my son’s who are twins is on the autism spectrum. He’s very high functioning, works in Cyber Security. And he didn’t discover his DX until he was in his late 20’s and is now going to be 35. Both of us have big hearts for animals.

    Hello Dr. Scott. My son at age 45 was diagnosed with ADHD. Because his boss cared about him, asked him what would help him at work. He wanted a quit area to work. He works on computers for others all day. Constant interruptions, folks just wanting “5 minutes” without following protocol. Moving him into the server where it is cool and quiet, made a major difference, but getting the diagnosis explained so much. The thoughts about himself and plans to re order his thinking helped also. Each person is different. You have a lot, right now. And when your heart hurts, but you have to continue wearing a mask to get through the day is so hard. And you are a “helper”. So kind, so caring of others and the wonderful animals. As a Retired RN I understand and had my episode where quiet and a reset was needed. The file cabinets in my brain were full and would not hold one more thing. Panic attacks are your body saying, ok, now even the little notes are too much, that file cabinet is tipping over. Time to empty some stuff. Therapy saved my life, taught me it is ok to have boundaries and say no. But helpers are also empathic. We feel others pain and feel compelled to help. We just don’t do that same care for our ourselves. You will take your new fur baby and get through this. Be kind to yourself. And asking for help is difficult, but shows strength, not weakness. The sunshine will soon find those shadows, in due time. Sending love and light to you and yours, and a big old “American Hug 🤗”! Your You Tube family here will support you.

      Autism is hard not because of the autism, but because society isn't built with autistic people or any people with disabilities in mind. It's not a problem with the people nor is it a disease. It's a problem with how our social systems are built.

    Just in case, you should never feel obligated to answer any questions about your personal life, it's none of others business! Online/social media is one weird duck. Appreciate all you do, and sorry to hear you're going through a tough time with the seperation. I hope it all gets better soon, and i'm glad you guys have found a coparenting routine that works. Congrats on 50k suscribers!

    Thank you for being so candid, Scott! It never occurred to me that you were autistic, or that I am until diagnosed at age 69. Have experienced and accomplished a lot, but always the nagging question, "What's wrong with me?", failed attempts to be "normal," and resultant burnout. A bumpy road to navigate, for sure. So glad your young ones were diagnosed early, have support, and can be their quirky, passionate selves. As for you, your passion and empathy have made so many lives better, including mine. ❤

    I have soooo much respect for you with this episode. I saw a change in you with this new channel and it really touched me, even though I couldn't explain what I felt... And I like this new version of you.
    Your discussion of your autism was especially moving. You should be an international spokesperson for autism.

    I really like the description “neurodivergent” because it suggests people having brain detours rather than defective wiring. And I’ve always found that detours offered the most unique scenery. It just feels a more positive description.

    I love Vet on the Hill. Thank you for rescuing all the animals you do. My nephew is autistic who lives in a group home. He is in his late 30s. My granddaughter is 16 and autistic. She is an animal lover in a half. Autistic is a complex disorder. They are very smart in some ways but in other things they find difficult. All we can do is love them and be patient. Love you, Dr. Scott. ❤❤❤

    Thank you for being so frank and open about your lived experience with an adult Autism diagnosis. I was just diagnosed with ADHD this year, and the process of looking back at my younger self and forgiving her for things I used to be angry at her for... that's so real. Neurodivergent representation matters, and your being so open about it is so incredibly valuable, so from the bottom of my little neurospicy heart: thank you. 💖

    Not in a million years would I have thought you were autistic!. Obviously a brilliant vet, you speak with poise and dignity and speak clearly. My son is 24 now. He was diagnosed when he was 5 with PDDNOS (pervasive development delay otherwise not specified) which basically means he falls under the autism umbrella. He graduated college and is now working! Lemme tell ya, the struggle was real!! If you told me he’d ever graduate college I’d never believe it. But he’s a great kid now!(and the struggle was real with him growing up!!) I’m
    Really proud of him!

My answer is always try to think and feel at the same time. It's not as easy as some people think. Much love to you and yours ❤
