I’ve watched a lot of the bench-grinder type videos on how to sharpen knives. This is by far the best. Great ideas (e.g., simply spinning the base around; inverting a jig saw where one doesn’t have a band saw, placing a layer of wood over the leather to prevent fraying while cutting), and adding a strop to the second wheel location just took it over the top. Great work. This will be my build model. Much appreciated. 🤙

One thing I like alot is that it's surprisingly quiet. I don't feel like I'm sacrificing any rpms or power for the quietness either. All in all it's a very nice machine. No vibration whatsoever.

The grinder not being secure to the table is asking for trouble. Roll up those sleeves, better yet...NO sleeves. In an instant, an avoidable accident can be a life changer. I'm saying this with 34 years of Operating Room Trauma experience. Great video and idea. Thanks. Love and Peace.
If your grinder is walking the wheel needs to be dressed or replaced, shouldn’t he sharpening on a walking grinder period

I don't need to change the stone instead..just use body soap on one side to make the stone less grits 😂 the blade sharp and shining
Very good video. This is what my family and i have been doing for 20+ years. You showed everything very well. Great job. The one difference between your build and ours is we normally use mdf, all of the little nooks and cranies in the mdf help the abrasive have a place to stick and stay, but ive used ply as well. I just personally like the mdf better. Anyway again great vid. Wish this would have been around 30 years ago when i was just starting to learn about carpentry, and making things.

Followed this step by step and my knives are razor sharp now. I used a router to cut the disc along with a circle cutting jig. Cutting it with a jigsaw failed because the chisels just exacerbated the minor irregularities of the disc edge. That led to a whole lot of vibration. After I cut a proper disc the vibration was gone. I also just bought a six inch leather stropping wheel because the cost was similar compared with buying the leather and doing it myself. The bench grinder I used was a $41 Wen model from Amazon. I have almost the same setup. But I picked up a set of paper wheels from some guy on eBay. Same grit on one side with wax and just fine polish on the other side.

Anyone notice he had a grinding wheel on one side, as he turns it over to change the base round it’s a polishing mop wheel, nice trick if you can do it, and before anyone comments yes I know he changed it an edited his video. Having said that ,very clever idea and tips on how to 👍
I have been thinking about buying/making a power knife sharpening system. While I want to get a beld sander it is more expensive to buy and much harder for me to make. Your system seems inexpensive and rather easy to make. Thanks for such a nice video.

That is a good way to drastically reduce the life of a knife or just outright ruin it. For one using a grinder removes steel at a very fast rate. But besides that the heat from friction will ruin the temper and soften the steel.
total codswallop if its so bad why can you buy wheels like this on amazon, it does not remove steel at a very fast rate even if you press on hard, also doesn't generate enough heat burn bog roll never mind ruining the temper have you ever used a setup like this, now go away before I loose my temper
Why? So they can sell more knives? Why can you buy all the other crap and junk you can anywhere? Miserable logic fail there. Anyhow it is easily demonstrated. Buy two of the same knife. Keep one the way it is, sharpen the other your way a few times. See what happens. Maybe OK for cheap knives but if you care about fine cutlery then listening to a clown like you is foolish. I'm sure you are more of a keyboard warrior than any thing else so my expectations are about as high as you forming better than a half ass syllogism.
Minimizing overheating is about technique. This in the same way that one can burn out a drill bit if they don’t know what their doing with it.
Just out of curiositiy, why don't you use a 180 grit grinding stone? Is this plywood method better?

A plywood wheel with simply polish works good if the knife isn't dull behind use I made one and it works great after only a few minutes of using

Hey, that's a brilliant idea..! I thought about a wet grinder, buffing wheel and what not to do the job. Even had an SCR in mind so it would turn slow enough. Now I see it can be done much easier.

Ouch, this is totally brilliant! By far the best vid on the matter. Now even I can do it. And I will! One question, though. Isn’t 180 grit to coarse? I saw chefs sharpening their kives with 1,000 grit first.
this was my thought, too...i think i will try the green chrome oxid cr3o2 with PG17 "grade" ( dont know the english word. sry )german ama-zone says "Cr³O² Chromoxidgrün stumpf 0,3 µm". this is used for finishing razors and should be smooth enough to the material
Great idea I have been doing my knives for years that way. You went to a lot of trouble for nothing. Take the covers off the wheels and turn the grinder around. Make your wheel the way you did out of good plywood, make it round with a file and sand paper and then just use rouge instead of the grit. Never used the leather strough but I will give it a try. I just use a steel.
Great job. I have some MDF and a spare grinder laying around just for this kind of project. I like the carbide and glue idea. Of course, it's a good example of why we should wear safety glasses, again.

Like how you produced your set up found it interesting to watch, you might find it better to use Aluminium Oxide instead of Silicon carbide which is generally used for non ferrous materials also cheaper, alternatively use a standard GC120 JV1A grinding wheel which will last a lifetime just grinding knives.
Pretty sure you can just swap the positive and negative on the motor and that will change the direction of the motor, rather than changing the base around. Probably only save a few min but that’s my 2 cents lol
A 1x30 belt sander with different grits of belts as well as a leather belt is much easier.

Very nice video, well explained, but i am curios if is not alittle bit dagerous the piece who is made from wood, it can brake in parts or something like this. But with some metal sheet in the exterior I think you can solve it. Anyway, gj Sean
MDF works really good.
They sell MDF wheels for sharpening on Amazon too. I would like to see that grinder turn slower to prevent overheating blade
It will not overheat the blade. Not making contact long enough and too with just a small surface. You have not worked with metal very much have you?

I use the fine grinding wheel then finish with a couple of passes across an oilstone.
Nice work, man, but one question. You dip the wheel in 180 grit silicon carbide. But most small grinders come with around 200 grit silicon carbide(?) stones already, so why change it for something very similiar?
I'm "elderly" and easily confused...... just curious, is there any reason or significance how or why the 2nd grinding wheel suddenly changes to a polishing wheel at 3:28?

Rather than change the continuity, you could simply turn the bench grinder around so it rotates away from you.🙆♂️🤔
But then you have the on/off button on the back, making it harder to stop it safely...
@@DCogny Then walk 2 steps around the front and turn it off. Before I go through all of this, I'd much rather take it to someone that sharpens knifes or throw it away and buy a new one, damn, that's a whole lot to go through for a knife sharpening. I must say, you're well skilled in this area.
@@markengland5799 I can't tell if you are joking or not. Are you really saying you'd rather throw out a knife, or pay someone else to sharpen? I can promise it's very easy if you try to learn. You can sharpen a knife with a few piece of sandpaper and piece of leather.
@@Danielson1818 No I'm not joking, to sharpen a knife the way you show, first off go to Lowes, buy 3/4 plywood, get saw to cut circles, and on and on you go, a sharp knife isn't worth all that trouble, time and money, at least not to me, I'll run it through my electric knife sharpener as I've always done.

I only responded that you said sharpening is too hard, and you'd rather get a new one, or pay someone (which costs more than you'd think.) My response was that you could learn with sandpaper and a piece of leather. That's how I started, and it was free scraps.
I'll send you a link to make this more clear. You don't need a bench grinder, or any power tools. This video is for people who already know the basics and moved up. The way I'm talking about is by hand, and the bench grinder is just automating the process at a faster speed.
If you have some scrap sandpaper at home, grab some pieces and flatten them on a table. You grind them manually on the sandpaper, and go up higher and higher in grit for a finer edge. The leather is for a strop. This polishes the edge, and leaves the knife shaving sharp. It's very easy if you put in the effort. An electric sharpener isn't "wrong", but just not nearly as good as the results you can get for yourself. Also, all knives have different edge geometry/angles. Does your electric sharpener change sharpening angles for different knives? Some do, but not many.... So basically, the idea is very simple and cheap if you just look into it. But a question = why did you have to "hack" the ggrinder ?
Why not just stand from the other side ? Or place the whole grinder the other way around ?
I think so he could have the switch on the front. Only reason I could guess.
@@johnvgig, Yes, much safer that having to reach over and/or around an unshielded grinding/polishing wheel spinning at 3,400 RPM. (Or why long sleeves around machinery with spinning blades or bits is a big no-no.)

Problem is we don't have an electrical grinder. If we had we would be able to sharpen our knives. Any ideas as to how we can do it without an electrical grinder. NOW that would be useful!

But I would like to know your opinion if the RPMs these grinders can achieve (usually around 3000) could damage the knife steel blade. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the rotational speed when sharpening a blade should be much lower.
It does help to have it running slower, check out my other videos as I made the wheels fit onto my lathe so the can run slower
