I own 2 TW horses and seeing this type of treatment of the breed is so hard to watch!! They take an animal that has a sweet disposition with lovely natural movements and distort & manipulate in ways that have to be torturous to the horse. So selfish & mean.

I've lived in Tennessee for 32 years and the big lick padded horses were everywhere then. Every local show had them. Happily, most local shows don't anymore and even at the "big" rated walking and racking shows numbers of padded horses have gone down as have spectator numbers which is all good news. The money isn't there from owners like it used to be. However, the abuse continues. They've just gotten craftier with it and not as blatant. The DQP inspections are a joke as the horse has to have OBVIOUS signs of soring to be disqualified and yes there are payoffs to pass a horse. Some of the flat shod horses go through some questionable training too, but not near what padded ones do. There's a reason why the big lick barns are closed to most people and reason why the horses lay down in stalls all the time if not tied to the wall. With all that said, abuse happens in EVERY facet and discipline of the show horse industry. There will always be trainers, owners and riders who short cut training or do messed up things to win at any cost. It's just that most other breeds/disciplines aren't as blatant about it as the big lickers. I blame the associations, judges and owners as much if not more than the trainers. They all know what goes on. When judges started placing horses lifting knees so high it couldn't be natural, the soring started to be in the money. Do yourselves a favor and search RUclips for midnight sun or merry go boy, two walking horse foundation sires that were naturally gaited. Get ready to cry over what's been done to ruin this wonderful breed.
I totally agree. once upon a time in my youth and ignorance I showed padded horses. I went to work for a show barn, briefly. Once I saw what was involved, I quit the whole thing at the risk of alienating my very involved family. I’ve owned trail horses since then, enjoying their great smooth gait and ideal temperaments since. My equation is this: horse+money+ego= whatever is necessary to make it win. Doesn’t matter what breed or discipline.

Sickening. There are horses whose natural gait is high stepping, why not ride one of those, like a Friesian or Hackney? I've ridden TN Walking Horses, Foxtrotters and Paso Finos. Their natural gait is wonderfully smooth. Why mess with something so perfect??? Someone should strap weighted platform shoes on the owners and make them run a mile race with a bag of sand of their backs. Whip them if they are too slow.

I tried to help the cause and he was verbally abusive and impossible to work with (you can see it in his comments when he responds to people here). I filmed some video that's on this channel. He would have had much more support if he were easier to work with, it's a shame. Blocked me from other social media sites because I was not putting up with his crap. I had great photos to share, too.
