You gotta try the pork belly and apple sauce pies at Fairlie Bakehouse when you are in the South Island -- with a piece of pork crackling baked into the top crust

I agree. I've often stopped in there for a good quick feed. There's also some awesome pies here in Green Bay. Really good Beef Bourguignon and awesome B&E pie too.

the best meat pies i've ever eaten were at the in-house cafe at the factory i work at. it got flooded during cyclone gabrielle two months ago and i've been deprived ever since. hopefully in another few months it will be rebuilt
@@donovankelly12 in case you weren't aware Georgie Pie was a McDonald's type restaurant chain that operated in NZ from the late 70s to mid 90s before eventually having all their nationwide outlets purchased and converted into McDonald's restaurants. 15 yrs later McDonald's started offering Georgie Pies on the menu having obviously bought the Georgie Pie brand as well as the building's. Why they didn't start selling them immediately I don't know. They lasted a while but little by little outlets started dropping them off the menu. I started having to drive a 50km round-trip to get my fix. Until one day they just disappeared.

best hidden gems are bakeries in South Auckland. If you're in Mangere try Central Bakery its right next to A mobil petrol station. Steak and cheese and Potatoe tops and sausage rolls are to die for.

Kiwi here, I love meat pies so much, the prices are just stupid now. $8 for a meat pie is ridiculous. Only about 3 years ago they were around 4 bucks, and I remember thinking even that was reaching the limit of what I would reasonably pay for a pie.
Give me Chicken, cranberry, and some form of cheese like brie, or a butter chicken pie any day ✌️ you can get some really fancy ones around even at the supermarket, lamb, mint + rosemary hits different too.
Awesome pies at the gas stations. While u are paying nz$3 a litre , which is nz$12 a gallon for your gas. (Thats us$7.50 a gallon) Nz$6.99 for one red pepper today at my local shop. Nz$12 for a dozen eggs.
Hope you tried the smoked fish pie while you were here and you could have bought that from anywhere cos anywhere in NZ you buy the smoked fish pie from, is gooooooooooooooooooood!!!

As a kiwi its amazing seeing the conversion...Muslims Indians Chinese etc walking around eating a pie from the packet...Also remember being at a petrol station and a lady just got back from the UK and was telling the server, Ive been in the UK and i missed the pies sooo much 😂.No matter where you come from This is Aotearoa New Zealand and pies are life 😂
There's always a place where you can find a good pie. Just stay away from Big Ben or similar brand pies sold at dairys. They're cheap and you get what you pay for.
As someone who lives in orewa i feel bad that you got this close to amazing food but ended up at orewa bakery and not red beach’s lol one of the locals should have told ya 😉

In New zealand the only food they have at any bakery is basically pies and sausage rolls.
And all the other baked goods and rolls and sandwiches and cakes etc.
