That stick only means a new design option, a guard that extends up from the outside edge that is about even with the rails. That way anything will glance off of that and hopefully bounce over the rail and the top. As it is now, if something glances off of the windows or the frame it will be shoved right into the rails and the top, as the stick did.
Would also allow the rails to be grabbed at high speed in cooler weather and not freeze your hands.
Could just make the frames all the way around the the sides and front. Might the extra metal might also make a good mounting point for any flood lighting wanted along the top.
