Nah there's a lot of thought in this video. I even saw that as a teenager. He employed "average" people to star in a catchy, happy video that would be both educational to children and fun for adults. nah.
Have you ever considered how many children's songs were pop hits? Probably this song and Shiny Happy People. Both Michael Stipe. If that's not a testament to his genius I'm not sure what is.
I remember when this song broke into the playlist on the CHR station I was working at in 1988. I couldn't get enough of it. Neither could our listeners. It was probably the number one requested song from our callers over the course of a three month period...
@@gordonlove5121 I do miss the days of radio stations and record companies that would sign, invest in, record and promote new talent. That is how my Program Director, at the time, got a copy of Stand from a still uknown, underground garage band called REM. If it wasn't for record company promotion and investment, and the wealth that eventually flowed REM's way, the system would not have worked. Unfortunately, when people really stopped paying for new music, the system collapsed.
@@gordonlove5121 I also recall, from my CHR Radio format days, that this song was barely two minutes in length when it first hit. It was a really iconic tune that didn't last nearly long enough, which is what I thought at the time during my never-ending ovenight shifts as a DJ. Still, once it got into the A or HOT rotation, it played at least once every 1.5 to two hours.
This song went to number 6 on the Billboard 100! And yet based on the number of views, has not aged as one of REM's classics in most people's views. For me, Green was the first REM album I had (on cassette), so this, Orange Crush, and Pop Song 89 will always be among my favorite singles by them.

There was a time, while growing up in the mid eighties in London that anything from the States ( bar the Cramps) was just NOT hip, we had New Romantics, Futurists, Goth etc....such was the obsession with image; a band had to 'look' right, have the right haircut...these guys were therefore overlooked by many as they displayed none of those facets, were almost 'non image conscious'...But as they proved, REM compiled an opus of music which far outlasted any of their UK contemporary 'vanity projects' in the UK (with possible exceptions of the Smiths)..This song is in a remarkable period which started with 'The One I love'....truly amazing.
get real. Takling Heads, The Pixies, Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, Replacements, Jesus and Mary Chain, Minuteman, Butthole Surfers all had pretty solid followings in the UK and all considered pretty hip. Not to mention mainstream acts like Madonna or Prince and Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner all had massive chart topping success year after year in the UK. Not as hip but such is pop music.
ahhh, REM.. this song always made me feel so happy when my parents argued and took it out on us kids.. I'd go to my room and JAM OUT to this on my Sony walkman.

I think a show like Get A Life would probably do a lot better in today's culture, with everyone and their brother striving to have comedy that's "leik sooo random and weirrrrd" and whatnot. It was definitely a funny show though. I've watched a few episodes on RUclips.

There are 3 main points to this - 1. This song sounds like it was made in the 90s. 2. This video looks like it was made in the 90s. 3. That carnival sounding intro is epic!
What a great song! R.E.M. had an immeasurable impact on music in the '80s, infusing the current new wave/punk trends with spot-on social commentary. Thanks for posting!

Anyone else finding themselves going through some old familiar songs then you start realizing how fast time has gone by. I have been thinking, feeling and expressing my passion for music and life on and off for the last few days ( trying not to share one negative thought or put down) and I think it put a end to my midlife crisis that I was in self denial about. Hahaa. I have always been a deep thinker and poetic music like REM helps put my thoughts into focus while blending in my emotions into the mix of it all. Nothing can come close to the unique quality that is REM. ✌️I want to see more of the youth getting into new school folk music all over again 💙
my wife is 125 and I am 135 and we just love getting down to this song after we feed the wild chickens on our dirty front lawn. we sleep in the basement with many newspapers.
The guys where I work decided to have a giggle one day and dance this when it came on the radio. I work on a production line, needless to say hilarity ensued.

I'll never forget MTV relentlessly playing this. And thank God they did, as this is the song that made me discover R.E.M. One brilliant album from them after another, they changed my childhood. Their songs have all stood the test of time.
Loved this Video and song!!! I BELIEVE this came out in 1988!!! LISTENING 1-2-2018 30 years later!!! TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! THEY WAS JAMMING IN THIS ONE!!!! YOUR FOOT ARE GONNA BE ON THE GROUND YOUR HEAD IS THERE TO MOVE YOU AROUND ...SO STAND.......
I have no idea why I out of nowhere I decided to listen to this and I haven't done that in years. Stand up and be counted or kneel down and and be mounted.
It's amazing how much of a future we cannot predict. I was 10 or so when this came out. Brother played this on cassette he recorded from VOA (Voice of America). I could not ever imagine coming back to this via the internet, on RUclips on a phone in 2018.
The interesting thing is that Catherine de Hueck Doherty, a Catholic spiritual writer and teacher, as well as many Buddhist teachers would say "Stand still, listen, and be aware." Where you go, there you are. I'm playing this song as a prayer for my class. Yes, the lyrics are simple but I think that's the point.
I love how when they say carry a compass..and they don't show a magnetic compass, but a I guess drafting compass. Also notice how in the video when they say now face north or west they face another direction. Great! I bet they had fun making this vid. (it's the little things!)

Although Peter Buck had said "it's the stupidest song we've ever written", I think it's great and it's one of my favorites. Love it!!!
And the 2019 ULTIMATE TRUTHER AWARD from the year that we can finally appreciate it goes too....R.E.M. for STAND!!!!
It's flat 😲
Think about the place that you live wonder why you haven't before... that statement goes much deeper than people know!
This song came out when I was 14...now at 41 I still think its great
Great song about our GEOCENTRIC, FLAT AND STATIONARY home :) Ahead of its time no doubt.
It’s not a flat earth song, dumbass.
This song has so much meaning to me personally and brings a tear to my eye , this song was probably listened to by those who lost there lives in 9/11 this song remand's me of that time i cant help but think of this song of that time, i am 27 years old and wasn't old enough to realise what happened, i have always listened to this song as such but i love this song, i hope it brings happiness to those that are still here to hear this masterpiece from all those years ago and brings some kind of happiness from the way it was in those days. Those who were living life when this song was alive you know what i mean. How innocent we were. RIP to all of those that lost there lives, I love you all, We will meet again
*I WANT TO BE IN AN R.E.M. VIDEO,* but they retired, so I must live vicariously through the videos with the lucky few who got in. That's my rant for today. Thank you for playing our game.
p.s.: *Bill the Cat* sez hello.
Am I the only one that becomes extremely happy just watching them dance?
There are 3 main points to this -
1. This song sounds like it was made in the 90s.
2. This video looks like it was made in the 90s.
3. That carnival sounding intro is epic!
The dance moves in their videos are hilarious
What a great song! R.E.M. had an immeasurable impact on music in the '80s, infusing the current new wave/punk trends with spot-on social commentary. Thanks for posting!
I find it impossible to feel sad after having listened to this song
This one and shiny happy people
Aimee Coleman Then you listen to Everybody Hurts and feel sad all over again. So what do you do? Listen to Stand again!
Matthew Carson Hurt, stand is the new lather, rinse (repeat) XD
Amen
The Fourth day of 2014 and i'm listening this...Cause you always gonna returns to the goos music always Michael happy 54th my wishes of health for you.
This is the song they play at our school when we change classes
Greetings from Australia :)
Should have hundreds of millions of views. I think it's their best.
This is so dorky and intelligent at the same time
Like ben Wyatt
these days dorks rule the world.
Like Get a Life.
The original hipster band to end all hipster bands! Still relevant today. Big shout out to those giving this a listen in 2016.
It was a pity this song never reached Top 40 in August 1989 because it was a good song.
People just don't know good music when they hear it
Anyone else finding themselves going through some old familiar songs then you start realizing how fast time has gone by.
The 90s was the very last of the great decades
😂x16
Every decade sucks lol
this song always makes me happy, even in most miserable times like now
The last 10 years have been some trip eh?😂

“requiem for a tuesday”
my wife is 125 and I am 135 and we just love getting down to this song after we feed the wild chickens on our dirty front lawn. we sleep in the basement with many newspapers.
I totally grew up with R.E.M. at an early age. I love all of there songs, even Shiny Happy People.
2022 and this is still one of my favorite songs.
I was 8 years old and I first fell in love with REM!!! What a funny song.
Absolutely nothing touches the magic and excellence of R.E.M.

REM - Stand (1989)
This must be the work of a friendly Stand!
:'D ゴゴゴゴ
Stop
I've been hearing this on the radio for like the past ten years and only now did I realize it was REM...
What a fun silly song from the soundtrack of my life. It's 100 years old but still fun!
But that's my grandfather's typewriter.
And they always face the wrong direction!
And I like that 4 seasons sound when they sing stand in the place where you are at the end.
Did you pause it?
Parks and Rec?
Gordon No, that's the whole thing.
Kiu1q2w apparently.
I TOLD LESLIE IT WAS BETTER THAN AVATAR!
Can't.
The guys where I work decided to have a giggle one day and dance this when it came on the radio. I work on a production line, needless to say hilarity ensued.
Omg! What memories this brings! Love REM
I love R.E.M. ❤️️❤️️❤️️...they were so talented, too bad they have broken up now & are no longer together to give us even more great music.😢

I'll never forget MTV relentlessly playing this. And thank God they did, as this is the song that made me discover R.E.M. One brilliant album from them after another, they changed my childhood. Their songs have all stood the test of time.
LOVE IT!!!
The variation in the lead vocal at the very end...amazing
Stand "If you are confused ' check with the sun.. carry a compass to know you along'... " your head to move you along.. "
Awesome song! I haven't heard this song in a long time.
when you work on a project for 3 weeks
i cant describe how much joy this song brings me
Best concert ever!! Spring of 95? Albany New York. Simply perfect!!
Why can't today's music be something like this? So catchy, sweet and full of innocence.
this song will never get old
PROOF!! Line-dancing has been around longer than we ever imagined.
Loved this Video and song!!! I BELIEVE this came out in 1988!!! LISTENING 1-2-2018 30 years later!!! TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! THEY WAS JAMMING IN THIS ONE!!!! YOUR FOOT ARE GONNA BE ON THE GROUND YOUR HEAD IS THERE TO MOVE YOU AROUND ...SO STAND.......
i was shocked when the song didn’t stop at 0:11
I always just close the tab when the song hits 0:12
Did you pause it?
sad
This was a million miles away from the big hair, big drums, big echo stuff that prevailed on MTV at the time.
it's called a stand because it stands behind you
stand in the place where you--
Great clip and song. Love it.
I have no idea why I out of nowhere I decided to listen to this and I haven't done that in years. Stand up and be counted or kneel down and and be mounted.
,Rem Rocks , I just moved here and loving it
Absolutely love this song!
loved this song as a kid
9 years later my comment is still true.
"think about the place where you live, wonder why you haven't before" ... Big clue there for those paying attention.
Oh my!!! This song ❤ pure love
See? We were just fine before the internet.
It's amazing how much of a future we cannot predict. I was 10 or so when this came out. Brother played this on cassette he recorded from VOA (Voice of America). I could not ever imagine coming back to this via the internet, on RUclips on a phone in 2018.
we take so much for granted.
Yeah, but i like talking with friends who live on the other side of the country
Michael Haring you’re using the internet to watch this right now
ok boomer
REM rocks! Doesn't matter what song or what video......it's ALL good and they will be VERY missed...........:-(
The interesting thing is that Catherine de Hueck Doherty, a Catholic spiritual writer and teacher, as well as many Buddhist teachers would say "Stand still, listen, and be aware." Where you go, there you are. I'm playing this song as a prayer for my class. Yes, the lyrics are simple but I think that's the point.
This is the most upbeat song I have heard from this band...
My brothers girlfriend loves this song. You can't get within 5 feet of her without hearing it.
I love how when they say carry a compass..and they don't show a magnetic compass, but a I guess drafting compass. Also notice how in the video when they say now face north or west they face another direction. Great! I bet they had fun making this vid. (it's the little things!)
I don't know if I've ever actually seen this video before today but I noticed it every time it happened and couldn't get over it
The compass is in your head...
I like how this song is about standing, when the four main people shown are actually dancing.
My first REM bought single. I was singing this at work and someone said " Oh that is a stupid video ". I said " No its not!". I love REM ." Automatic For the People"!
