Today I wanna introduce you my home town Altdorf. It's the capital of Uri in Switzerland. With nearly 10'000 citizens it's the largest village in Uri. Altdorf It is also the junction towards to the two passes Saint Gotthard to the south, a major north-south axis through the Alps, and the Klausen Pass to the east. Altdorf sits on the Gotthard line and is the last railway station before the entrance into the new Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest railway tunnel. Altdorf is best known as the place where, according to the legend, William Tell shot the apple from his son's head. This act by tradition happened on the market-place, where in 1895, at the foot of an old tower, there was set up a fine bronze statue of Tell and his son. In 1899 a theatre was opened close to the town's center for the purpose of performing Schiller's play of Wilhelm Tell. The same year a new carriage-road was opened from Altdorf through the Schächental and over the Klausen Pass (1,948 metres (6,391 ft)) to the village of Linthal (46 kilometres (29 mi)) and so to Glarus.

Heute möchte ich euch meine Heimatstadt Altdorf vorstellen. Es ist die Hauptstadt von Uri in der Schweiz. Mit fast 10'000 Einwohnern ist es das grösste Dorf in Uri. Altdorf Es ist auch die Kreuzung zu den beiden Pässen Sankt Gotthard im Süden, einer der wichtigsten Nord-Süd-Achse durch die Alpen und dem Klausen-Pass im Osten. Altdorf liegt an der Gotthard-Linie und ist der letzte Bahnhof vor dem Eingang zum neuen Gotthard-Basistunnel, dem längsten Eisenbahntunnel der Welt. Altdorf ist auch bekannt als der Ort, an dem William Tell der Legende nach den Apfel aus dem Kopf seines Sohnes Walterli schoss. Dieser Akt geschah traditionell auf dem Marktplatz, wo 1895 am Fusse eines alten Turms. Heute steht dort als Andenken eine schöne Bronzestatue von Tell und seinem Sohn. 1899 wurde in der Nähe des Zentrums ein Theater eröffnet, um Schillers Stück Wilhelm Tell aufzuführen. Im selben Jahr wurde auch eine neue Kutschenstrasse von Altdorf ins Schächental und über den Klausenpass (1.948 m) nach Linthal, Glarus (46 km) eröffnet.
