Yeah, i was blamed by my friend when I said 'was' is for informal and 'were' is for formal. She strongly believes that 'were' is the most most correct. 😢
In American English, you would hardly ever hear anyone say "If I was you"....we tend to always say "If I were you" because this is a phrase. But, in other situations you can see people using was instead of were. like "If it was summer, we could go to the beach". We cannot generalize. In formal situations like a job interview for instance I would say "were" sounds more appropriate. I myself use were most of the times. Even Beyoncee sings If I were a boy.
@@buschhuhn9197 actually, the right grammar is to use "were" with all pronouns when we have a conditional sentence. But, in everyday language, people just end up using "was".
Were I you, I would add the conditional without "if" here ;) Thank you for simplyfing it for me. Actually it's created like conditional in Polish, first past simple, then sentence with would. Well done!
If i was king i would marry the Queen. If i won the lottery i would buy an island in the caribbean. If i had skills in boxning i should challenge Anthony Joshua. Thank you very much for your helpfull lesson. You have made it clear the zero, first and second conditionall. I appreciate it and greatfull dude.🙏🙏🙏
You are a great teacher (sir). We, the english students, really have problems with conditional. I've spoken english for 23 yeas and still have problems with that stuff. I almost all the time use to say "if I was", But thank you I have it clearly now. Thanks a lot bro.
I was expecting at least a mention of the past subjunctive and its use in counterfactual situations. Even though the subjunctive in general seems to be optional in English nowadays. Sentences like "If I were you" or "I wish I were rich" actually refer to the present and describe something that is untrue (I am not you, I am not rich) Although rare, it is possible to have a sentence with a conditional that refers to the past, even in the first person. For example: If I was wrong about what I said (when we spoke yesterday), then I apologize. Here it would be wrong to use "If I were". We are speaking about an event in the past, the validity of which we are unsure of. Similar sentences in the third person are slightly more common. If he was home when you rung the bell, why didn't he open the door?
Great usefull mnemotechnic expressions. I will keep them in mind! - If I will makes me ill - If I would is no good You make it simple and really amusing. Great job! Thanks!
Hello Professor Thank you so much for your interesting information about English, i do appreciate your job. I wish you peace and happness under the sky of prosperity. All the best. Take care and have a good time. Your Student from Algeria.
Hi Greg." If I could I would". Could you explain? Regarding the lesson, the best example I've ever found was 'I don't have much money, but, boy, If I did, I'd buy a big House where we both could live '
I live in the United States, in Seattle, and “if I was you” is most certainly not acceptable. If I WERE you is correct, both written and spoken. It is important.
At 7:22, you're not quite right. The was/were connundrum is another example of your type 1 vs type 2 conditional. If something *could* be possible, then use "was." If something could never be possible, then use "were." If I *were* you (because I can never be you). If I *was* there (I could have been there, but wasn't). To illustrate further: If I *was* in Italy, but if I *were* on Mars.
I recommend my students to listen to this song ' If I were a richman " from movie called Fiddler on the roof' .its one of the best ways to learn / practise second conditional part :) .
It is same like when you want to using "would" its not really happening but you can imagine for that. And use "will" it is must be happening no matter what ?
To this day, "If I was" still sounds iffy to me. But I'm not a native speaker, so who am I to say it's wrong... It could be that I'm "old school", or (probably) that in my native language (Spanish) the distinction between indicative mood and subjunctive mood is still important.
Hi, Greg! I suppose we can use "could" and "might" as well for the second conditional, can't we? For example: "If the plumber was there, he could help stop the flood"... ... ... or, is it correct to say "If the plumber were there, he could help stop the flood", I mean "were" instead of "was" (In my head, "were" can only be used with 'I' for the second conditional)? Great lessons, btw, thank you!
Its a next video Im watching and I appreaciate your lessons. Till now, I only watch English With Lucy and I tought no one can be better, Im glad I was so wrogne ^^. I finaly understood this condition. Thank you. So You have just earned a sub ^^.
Hi Greg. Some native teachers would say it's alright in specific circumstances. If you will play video games instead of studying, you'll never pass your exam.
Thank you very much sir for all your videos. Could you teach us a lesson on. Being....??? And how it can be used . For example: Is Being. For Being. Was Being. Were Being. Thank you....

At school I was told to say "If I were", but, as you explained, I notice lots of Anglo-Americans say "if I was" 🙂
Loved The Beatles reference ❤️

Absolutely love this video. I appreciate how you pointed out the common mistakes. Going to use this in my lesson plan assignment.

American English is kinda messed up.
I presume the "were" is there because of "I" (first person singular). So in case of "summer", which is third person singular, "was" is correct, or?
Sorry, I meant to say because of the "You", which is second person singular... My bad!
@@buschhuhn9197 actually, the right grammar is to use "were" with all pronouns when we have a conditional sentence. But, in everyday language, people just end up using "was".
it's a new tendency to use Was instead of Were!

On not using "could" twice: "If I could go anywhere I wanted to, I could go to the Moon." It does work, context is important!
