@@ABitMoreJordan Yeah that's a shame. I liked 3 just as much as the first two and thought it made a good transition to being fully 3D. I totally agree, everyone tend to diss the 1st game because they are obsessed with 2. I personally played 1 first and to this day I still prefer it to 2. Suikoden 2 is a polished game but I didn't like the story and characters as much as the first one. I prefer the music in 1, I prefer the war mini game.

Suikoden is one of the most brilliant games ever. I play it regularly because it always gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. It is (compared to other RPGs) incredibly short. You can complete the game with the best ending in 16 to 20 hours - without rushing through it on purpose. The game has no side quests per se. The only optional things to do, are some mini games to recruit some characters. There is only the main story and the characters to recruit on the way. But still, when you finish it, you get a sense of accomplishment. You just experienced an epic story that never feels rushed and doesn't leave you with the feeling that there should be more. The reasons I prefer 1 are simple. I am currently playing this on my Rg35XX. I never grew up with a Playstation, my parents refused to buy me one because they didn't want me to spend a chunk of my childhood playing games. My cousin did have a PS1 that time so I got to try some PS1 titles. You could say this is my first ever 'real' experience with a PS1 game and it's on a retro handheld. Needless to say, I am in love with this game. It has a certain charm I cannot seem to put my finger on. The characters and environment is full of life and I honestly find myself a bit attached with some characters. It's definitely a gem and I'm glad I got to experience a fresh playthrough of it while healing my inner childhood.
I love the series but “Suikoden V” is my favorite! (Although I love “Suikoden” also. Great story and characters. I love “Suikoden II” also). “SV” was the “Game of Thrones” of JRPG’s. You had two noble families maneuvering politically for control of the nation.
It's weird how I don't remember a whole lot about SV. I guess it came at a bad time for me in terms of my gaming habits. I was spending more time with friends and playing in a band rather than playing video games. Can't wait to get back to it some day in the next couple of years.
Holy shit these are long videos - but since you started with one of my favourite games of all time (and I am amoung those who think Suikoden I is better than Suikoden II, ESPECIALLY the soundtrack). Suikoden III was god awful, the 3D graphics were terrible. I liked SUikoden II a lot but the main characters are a lot more boring, the soundtrack with a few exceptions, is inferior in instrumentation, complexity and sound quality to Suikoden I, and I wasnt' crazy about the villains. You def have a lot of the same taste as me in games. 3 HOURS on Skies of Arcadia? Holy shit dude. What's your favourite FF? Mine is FFIV. Wild Arms and Alundra are also two of my favourite games, you are clearly a man of taste when it comes to some of the best OSTs in all of video games. I only just was able to download Vagrant Story, Vandal Hearts I and II, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon and Safa Frontier 2 on Duckstation. Suikoden has a magic to it - Miki Higashino's finest work, without question. The freaking ATMOSPHERE in this game. I can't think of a single video game soundtrack aside from maybe Secret of Mana with such a diverse soundtrack that is at the same time so cohesive
I'm currently playing Suikoden 2 again for the first time in 20 years and... yeah I still like the first one more. Perhaps it's nostalgia, perhaps it's the tighter narrative, but I can totally understand why most don't feel the same way as us. My favourite FF is 7, which is clichéd but i'm sure I'll make a 5 hour video to explain why haha. I need to get around to properly playing Wild Arms. I had the PS1 Classic on PSP but I'd always get an hour in and then get distracted.
@@ABitMoreJordan def check out Duckstation emulator - the graphics are SO much better than on the original PS1 it's really delightful actually. I haven't played any of Wild Arms 2-5 but need to get around to trying
So, figuring out who the traitor is actually can be done early on. So, Luc is recruited and he brings along that slab that records the name of every recruit you have (the names are only visible once they join your army). But Sanchez's name is never recorded. You might think "Well, he's an NPC like Mathiu, so maybe only those who can be put in the party are recored?" but no, Mathiu is there along with other people you recruit but can't put in your party, like shopkeepers.
I played suikoden after ffVII and it looked so outdated and the combat was terrible, but i kept playing it over the years and now i consider it the equal of ffVII, the character sprites have a lot of personality and compared to ffVII they're detailed, the character portraits help with this too. suikoden is a thoroughly engaging game with surprising depth both in its systems and characters. I like your attitude and humour, this a brillant video.
Great video! I really enjoyed your in-depth analysis of Suikoden 1. It's clear that you have a deep appreciation for this classic JRPG. The way you discussed the game's storyline and characters was engaging and informative. Keep up the fantastic work!
@@ABitMoreJordan Probably VI. Pagan was so rushed, so awful, that it killed the entire franchise. It took everything the series did well, and threw it all out the window. Updating to say I watched the whole video. Great work, I enjoyed it! 🐵 (Also, Dragon Quest does a very similar thing with its inventory)
I'm one of the opinion that suikoden 1 is the best. I know almost everyone will disagree but i just loved that game. I literally like them in order of release lol. Except 4 and 5. So 1, 2, 3, 5, 4 that's the order from most favorite to least. Suikoden 3 is so amazing turning my boy luc against me was just wrong lol.
Yes, this IS the best rpg ever made and yes, I AM the biggest fan (we all say that btw :) ). - U are right about that song, I play guitar and it's my fav piece of all time - It's the first rpg i ever played (so, biased) but have never found a counterpart - Suikoden 2 is overrated, buggy and lacking in multiple parts BUT> - If someone made a combo of 1 and 2 properly it would be the best thing ever - Music, feelings, gameplay, extras, it has it all: Play it.
Core memory unlocked in 2024. I was such a fan, I remember poking around for and finding the Outlaws of the Marsh books in an English translation. I wonder where those ended up.
Woah, this is also my very favorite and have played many times. For me it was Gremio’s death that was the hardest for me as a kid.. it’s amazing what you take from it at different points of your life and that it has that kind sort of depth! Of course I also had to get Suikoden 2 and enjoyed it, but it’s mostly forgettable to me compared to 1… (maybe because I played it at a less influential time?) The other intriguing aspect of Suikoden is the mysterious reoccurring characters like Yuber/Pesmerga, Jeanne, etc. that you always wonder what their story is! Thanks for taking me back with your in-depth video… just finally went back and beat Azure Dreams so I look forward to that video!
The gut punches in this game were really tough to take as an 11 year old...couldn't believe it..gremio,pahn (first time) Teo,Ted Black... It really beat you down . Won't lie the day i first completed it I felt traumatized... Mathieu falling at the final hurdle... Viktor and Flik staying behind to cover your escape ( me hoping they'd survived knowing they probably hadn't) and in the end the hero being so broken by the soul eater rune he leaves it all behind for a life of loneliness and solitude. The 2nd and final fantasy 7 did eventually dethrone it as my favorite game but...damn the first really let you know it meant business 😂
If you're wondering where you can play the game, some options are buying the physical copy, (you can play that on PS1, PS2 and PS3), downloading it on the Playstation store, which you can play on PSP or PS3, you can download an emulator and play it on computer or phone using emulator, and you can wait for the remaster which is supposed to come out for next gen consoles within the year.
THis game's soundtrack is the single reason it's better than its sequel. It is top 5 all time for all video games. Suikoden 2's OST was good but it didn't compared to the first game
Hey Jordan. I’ve been looking for a video about Shmups you can play in tate mode. I bought Raiden V, turned my TV sideways only to find it doesn’t have Tate! WTF! Pleeese make a video on the best games you can play tate!
Boom, watched the whole thing in one go.. 🙈🙉🙊 Well, I had it one in the background and listened to most of it while I was working, but still.. 😁 Have a good one Jordan!
Lmao the box art for Suikoden 1 always gave me the feeling the game was just thrown together for some reason... Then when I played it I realized why. Quack noises when you select certain things in menu, and the crazy Indian music instrument noise when a party member joins you and various other quarks. Love this game though lol.
🐒 Proudly am also someone who loves the first game more. So glad I found this video. For me the moment Gremio died changed gaming for me. I was already a pretty big reader and was in my early teens. I had played games and enjoyed them but his death was the first moment I realized a story in a game could have the same impact as a great moment in a novel. I didn't even know if I liked Gremio. He was such an afterthought to me until that moment he closed himself in the poisoned room. It made me feel guilty, sad, and shocked in a way that forever changed my perception of video games as a medium for storytelling.
I'll hear you out, but dubbing your main character after yourself is the point of an RPG. And those character interactions mean more as well. That doesn't change when you get older. lol
"there are some who keep to themselves for fear of being shunned by society for thinking that suikoden 1 is better than 2, and I am one of them" What a brave opinion Brave, and wrong Shun the nonbeliever S1 is a fantabulous game and I love it dearly, but S2 is just a strict improvement over it.
I fucking love the character art in this game more than any other game. It's so distinct and the watercolour art style, esp on characters like Odessa, is so memorable
Great video. I never played this game after watching this video it makes me want to play. This video didn’t feel long.the only one I played was for the ds and I loved it.🐵🙈🙊
Something not mentioned in the video is, Dragons aren't naturally inherent to this world, and rely on a True Rune always having an owner to anchor them here. Upon their immenent death, dragons can return themselves to the World of Wings and Scales; we don't know if this saves them or whether they just go to die at home. We've never seen one take a fatal wound, go there, and then return at least. Which means Black, for whatever reason, chose purposely not to do so as he was dying.
I don't think a little tutorial for combat is a bad thing. Especially if said mechanics are complicated or has a lot of mechanics like the Xenoblade games.
Gremio was the biggest personal loss to tir, not ted, not teo, not Mathieu, gremio, so getting him back at the end really makes it worth getting all 108 stars
I enjoyed this retrospective. I actually played Suikoden 2 before playing the original. However, it was like finding a treasure when I finally played it. I bought it the first time i saw it for sale in a local shop. My brother was lucky enough to get his copy at a yard sale for only $1.
Thank you. I played 2 before I played 1. I initially preferred 2, it was prettier but at some point 1 took over. For all the reasons you just said. Music, story, pacing, characters. If you haven't played 3 just be prepared, it's my least favorite, so many children characters. It's bad. It makes 4 look like Citizen Kane or I suppose Moby Dick in this case. Boats! Anyway great video. Great taste in video games. Play Metal Gear?
Not sure if anyone corrected you, but the suikoden strategy game “suikfoden tactics” didn’t stay Japanese exclusive. It was released in Northamerica . But anyways… your channel rocks ^_^}

It's weird how I don't remember a whole lot about SV. I guess it came at a bad time for me in terms of my gaming habits. I was spending more time with friends and playing in a band rather than playing video games. Can't wait to get back to it some day in the next couple of years.
@@ABitMoreJordan I like V, but I don't get the hype personally.
I found you through David RPG. great channel. Suikoden is my favorite series. Suikoden 2 is the greatest. cant wait for Eudin Chronicles
That’s true. But it was something i realised after the first time I’d beaten the game
Thanks a lot! :)
Great video! I really enjoyed your in-depth analysis of Suikoden 1. It's clear that you have a deep appreciation for this classic JRPG. The way you discussed the game's storyline and characters was engaging and informative. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you professor.
"Suikoden IV was probably one of the biggest disappointments in history".
Ultima fan here, remembering the travesty that was Ultima VIII: Pagan.
I think I played one of the Ultima games on SNES, it seemed pretty hardcore for me as a kid
🙊
Rocking up a year late. Suikoden 4 was disappointing but so much better than FF13 or 15.
(Suikoden 3 is the best one)
I will acknowledge that 2 is probably the better game. But I like 1 more personally. But why choose? Both are incredible
I can’t wait to be able to play 3 at some point
@@ABitMoreJordan 3 is so bad
@@StewNWT no its not 3 was great. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
God I love this game. This and FFIV are the most emotional games I've ever played.
Yes, this IS the best rpg ever made and yes, I AM the biggest fan (we all say that btw :) ).
- U are right about that song, I play guitar and it's my fav piece of all time
- It's the first rpg i ever played (so, biased) but have never found a counterpart
- Suikoden 2 is overrated, buggy and lacking in multiple parts BUT>
- If someone made a combo of 1 and 2 properly it would be the best thing ever
- Music, feelings, gameplay, extras, it has it all:
Play it.
Here we go
🙌
Core memory unlocked in 2024. I was such a fan, I remember poking around for and finding the Outlaws of the Marsh books in an English translation. I wonder where those ended up.
I like the story of suikoden 2 but I really don’t enjoy the recruiting aspect of it. Especially the squirrels. It just doesn’t make sense
Woah, this is also my very favorite and have played many times. For me it was Gremio’s death that was the hardest for me as a kid.. it’s amazing what you take from it at different points of your life and that it has that kind sort of depth! Of course I also had to get Suikoden 2 and enjoyed it, but it’s mostly forgettable to me compared to 1… (maybe because I played it at a less influential time?)
The other intriguing aspect of Suikoden is the mysterious reoccurring characters like Yuber/Pesmerga, Jeanne, etc. that you always wonder what their story is!
Thanks for taking me back with your in-depth video… just finally went back and beat Azure Dreams so I look forward to that video!
Hopefully I can get Azure Dreams done early next year. Currently writing a Suikoden 2 script.
LMFAO - Gay suikoden fanfiction? Hrmmm who would I pair together?
Ted and Futch and Luc as a throuple of of course!
I don't know how you will take this,
But this Chanel feels like projaren 2.0
Same feeling, different Era
If you're wondering where you can play the game, some options are buying the physical copy, (you can play that on PS1, PS2 and PS3), downloading it on the Playstation store, which you can play on PSP or PS3, you can download an emulator and play it on computer or phone using emulator, and you can wait for the remaster which is supposed to come out for next gen consoles within the year.
Suikoden 1and 2 are the perfect original and sequel game. It's a true gift
Well, I had it one in the background and listened to most of it while I was working, but still.. 😁 Have a good one Jordan!
Absolute legend! 🙈
@@ABitMoreJordan You are the legend, thanks for all the content you make here and on your other channels. Take care!
Lmao the box art for Suikoden 1 always gave me the feeling the game was just thrown together for some reason... Then when I played it I realized why. Quack noises when you select certain things in menu, and the crazy Indian music instrument noise when a party member joins you and various other quarks. Love this game though lol.
Honestly, Suikoden 3 is my favorite. Suikoden 2 is a very, very close second :).
🐒
Proudly am also someone who loves the first game more.
I mean, I actually really liked Suikoden 4, so I'm not exactly in the position to be throwing stones for liking Suikoden 1 the most.
SUIKODEN 1 and 2 is the best, didnt get a chance to play suikoden 3, suikoden 4 is not my style and suikoden 5 is slow to me.
All praise Leigh Brackett...but this is not Star Wars. Or Kurosawa's Fortress.
I'll hear you out, but dubbing your main character after yourself is the point of an RPG. And those character interactions mean more as well. That doesn't change when you get older. lol
"there are some who keep to themselves for fear of being shunned by society for thinking that suikoden 1 is better than 2, and I am one of them"
What a brave opinion
Brave, and wrong
Shun the nonbeliever
S1 is a fantabulous game and I love it dearly, but S2 is just a strict improvement over it.
I almost see them as one long game.
But I enjoy the First more. I couldn't afford a copy of two until I was older.
I fucking love the character art in this game more than any other game. It's so distinct and the watercolour art style, esp on characters like Odessa, is so memorable
Great video. I never played this game after watching this video it makes me want to play. This video didn’t feel long.the only one I played was for the ds and I loved it.🐵🙈🙊
Suikoden 3 was by far one of the worst entries. I don't consider the DS title an actual Suikoden game lol
I've seen somewhere that the war battle mechanic of Suikoden is a rock-paper-scissor where ninja beats all three
I love 2 and 5. Never finished 1. Maybe this can make me comeback and finished it.
Hope you can!
Suikoden 1 is amazing
Incredible game. Genre defining.
👍
I don't think a little tutorial for combat is a bad thing. Especially if said mechanics are complicated or has a lot of mechanics like the Xenoblade games.
I have prayed suikoden 1 3 4 and5 and I like them but I never got to play 2 I am looking forward to the remasters
Suikoden with smooth jazz, I'm in.
🎷🎶
Suikoden 1 & 2 are amazing, I think about them like an only one game split in two parts
New sub here! Looking forward to you playing and reviewing Parasite Eve as well, Jordan.
Awesome, thank you!
this is a fun channel a mix between a playthrough and a review
You made me cry unironically. I hate you 😅 (I love Suikoden 1 SO much)
My body is ready.
I hope you make it through!
I still prefer 4 over 3. I hate how they set Luc and how villain like Yuber end up as star destiny
I still can't figure out why suikoden 4 gets so much hate but it was my first so maybe I'm biased
Water Margin (Suikoden) the Classic Chinese Novel that influenced Japanese Literature, Anime & Yakuza - Cool History Bros RUclips Channel
Gremio was the biggest personal loss to tir, not ted, not teo, not Mathieu, gremio, so getting him back at the end really makes it worth getting all 108 stars
😮 Thank you for video. Had wait for a bit until I had enough time to watch it. You did a great job.
Thanks ever so much! Hope you enjoyed it 😊
I enjoyed this retrospective. I actually played Suikoden 2 before playing the original. However, it was like finding a treasure when I finally played it. I bought it the first time i saw it for sale in a local shop. My brother was lucky enough to get his copy at a yard sale for only $1.
Glad you enjoyed it! Sounds like he found a bargain!
I had played through like 80% of this game before getting away from it. This video is PERFECT so I don't need to restart! Thanks Jordan!
Thanks for watching Jeff!
Metal Gear series is on my list of things to do. At this rate though it might be a good few years before I get to it 😅
Not sure if anyone corrected you, but the suikoden strategy game “suikfoden tactics” didn’t stay Japanese exclusive. It was released in Northamerica .
But anyways… your channel rocks ^_^}
Hmm… I can’t remember exactly what I said, but I know that. Maybe I meant the Card Battler or Woven Web
I just found your channel dude and I am very very entertained! Thanks for the videos and more power to ya! 🐒
Awesome, thank you!
Love the video except your butchering the name of the game
