Gary is a sad case. The city had over 175,000 people within it's borders back in 1960. Now, after losing over 20 percent on two separate occasions, the city has something like 68, 69 thousand folks...losing over 60 percent the last 60 years.
Gary is a testament to the dangers of rampant industrial growth. Once it became less profitable to produce and export as much steel in the U.S., so many people lost a good quality of life because the area depended on those now gone industries to thrive. Of course coal mining communities suffered as a direct result too.
Shoutout to 2300 Jackson Street. That was a real nice touch in the video, just like when you rolled around Greenwood, Tulsa. Very much appreciated. Also, shoutout to the South Shore Line. Since folks are doing requests in the comments, I'm throwing mine in for an equipment/setup video showing how you do this stuff. I want to do the same kind of videos, but just around the local metro.
Do I-465, I-469, and I-865 sometime this week or next week. I-465 is the Indianapolis Beltway. I-865 is a connector between I-65 and I-465. I-469 is the Southern, Eastern, and Northern bypass around Fort Wayne Indiana.
It's a shame , you have some really nice houses with well maintained gardens. The there's the neighborhoods who don't give a flying f..k, it's like night and day.
Es una ciudad tan abandonada y deteriorada , que se vuelve extremadamente atractiva. Hermosas recidencial con abundante patio.. tiene que haber Sido hermosa en sus momentos de mayor auje. Saludos. Lindo recorrido...
Coming from a person who is used to urban blight. Gary don't look that bad. The City has done a terrific job removing the run down buildings. The City desperately needs a tax base. If only the city can lure investors to create jobs.
It needs more than that. Just because you place a job in the city of Gary doesn't mean that the employee will live in the city of Gary. Jobs in Gary may help benefit the local tax base of outside areas like Hobart, Portage, Crown Point, or even Valparaiso. Gary needs residents. But people don't want to willingly move to crime ridden areas.
@@citrustaco Gary has to start somewhere. The city needs to rezone downtown into commercial development. Most of the homes are either abandoned or demolished. Downtown needs apartments and office space to help generate a tax base. This would help pay for public services. So yes, Gary needs people, but if the city lure in corporations like Healthcare, Hospitality, and telecommunications people will move there.
Gary has suffered what is known as "White Flight", similar to Detroit and other decaying and very dangerous cities resulting in a population of around 85% black and less than 10% caucasian. The demographic of the tax base does matter but is there a nice way to say "Hey white folks pls come back?"
I’m from Gary, In My family and I moved 20 years ago and went to Georgia. I go back home every year about 3/4 times.
Damn. Reminds me of parts of Detroit and Camden NJ. It’s borderline soulless.
Aww. Poor Gary, I genuinely feel sorry for it .🥺

where did they all go?
Almost surreal to see in person.
@efil4kizum either out of state or to other areas of Indiana. I'm thinking to the south or west.
@@MileageMikeTravels I'd agree. The video showed me as if I was there. If I'm ever in the Chicago area, I might stop by for a quick visit.

Here is a note most people don't know. 4th Ave went both ways in the 50's. Almost got killed on my bike around 56-57.

Gary Indiana looks like a great town as well. But still the population is diminishing but I prefer to see Bloomington or Muncie as well
Believe me both flint Michigan and Camden nj aren’t looking that great either these days 😮
Can you do a Drive Tour of South Bend IN?

Oneday Gary will be fine
Hope so
I like your optimism. 🌼
Makes me sad to see Gary Indiana looking like this. Nearly a Ghost Town.
Not like Camden, which just feels dangerous. Gary just feels abandoned.

Certain places in gary are no go zones. Don't get caught up in one.
Proof that the adage, "The sun never shines in Gary, Indiana" is false.
I want up in Gary in 1998
Downtown could use a upgrade
This place seem sad, very sad.
you should see Cairo Illinois
Interesting
East Cleveland Ohio looks mighty worse today folks 😮
Have mercy. Looks like a horror movie.
