Facts. As a Football Manager at International Level GS is a spineless-coward when it comes to making instinctive match-changing decisions. Always safety 1st pass ball sideways-backwards-to-keeper. Jordan Pickford has probably had more touches with his feet than all the Midfield and Kane put together.
Joey was Liverpool's player of the season from a fans perspective anyway. Far better defensively than Trent, just not as good going forward but he's got better at that.

Joe Gomez was exceptional at left back last season for liverpool. Played there probably 2 dozen times and didnt put a foot wrong. Defended well and was dangerous on the flanks
Joe Gomez was so good for Liverpool at left back, yet he gets ignored for some reason. Statistically he was the best performing English left back last season, yet he’s overlooked because he’s not an exiting player who’ll score and assist. Weird

Totally agree - though the click bait BS from the Mail and the Mirror are quoting this podcast and misconstruing it. These guys have been v critical of England but have measured it with support for the team. Totally lost when it's been quoted.
Walker had a stinker. Gomez is a LB for Liverpool. Quick stats from Micah 15 games. Did he look it up lol. Gomez better LB then Walker at LB all day long.
I only follow football when it's international. This pod, however, has become one of my favourite things to listen to. The Gazza episode got watched yesterday. It's absolutely hilarious and heartfelt. Cheers, lads!
I hate to be negative, but I keep hearing that our win could be the turning point and a spark to change it going forward and I'd love to get behind that thought, but the fact that we played a full half hour after those 2 goals and sat deep and looked fearful does not give me great hope that we're suddenly gonna smash it.
Do England need a turning point? Wouldn’t that be switching from winning to losing? I get the impression that what most fans want is a team that constantly looks like it’s attacking, even if those attacks come to nothing (e.g. Portugal yesterday, zero goals in 120 mins) versus one that is maddeningly patient in possession but ends up scoring two goals in 120 mins.
How about Klopp as our next manager? He's not got much going on in the near future, it wouldn't be the constant pressure of the PL and we know he can get the best from players.
Interesting talking about Jude's ego/cajones /arrogance. Even Cristiano Ronaldo showed his humble side last night. The occasion got to him emotionally. He broke down and recovered. After scoring his penalty he immediately apologised and thanked the Portugal fans. It was lovely to see. Heartwarming actually. I don't want do see Jude's ego take over his requirements to help the team.
CR7 humble?? 😂😂😂 that's funny. It's okay being teary when he was greedy AF the entire tournament up until that point. The amount of freekicks he's wasted is hilarious.
The lack of respect for Switzerland Slovenia and Slovakia is where England fails. They haven't done anything by way of results that distinguish them from the other teams.
This off the cuff point, Man City are much more stringent than Liverpool who's players are able to adapt to anything because they swap constantly and move freely. Gomez should get a look in now.
Starting Tripper over an experienced left back in Joe Gomez is nothing short of ludicrous, especially after watching the original tactic categorically fail for 4 straight games. Kyle Walker has shown that, unfortunately, after a stellar career, he's a complete liability now. Trent is the best right back in the squad and must start from now on. Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham is the correct midfield, but how Wharton hasn't been given minutes is ridiculous, especially given the fact England have needed an influx of forward thinking creative play in every single game. Bowen was given a cameo in game one, immediately gave Kane the best chance he's had all tournament, showed pace and desire Saka could only dream of and has somehow appeared to have played himself out of Southgate's mind entirely. Palmer starting over Saka, at this point, cannot be disputed by anyone bar the most ardent, bad faith Arsenal fans, it's a complete no-brainer. Anthony Gordon has played for 2 minutes and done more than Foden in 4 games, and yet cannot get a game, even when England were faced with a 37 year old full back. You guys obviously have to toe the line and be diplomatic when it comes to Southgate, but at this stage it's gone beyond farce. He's completely inept, and we have absolutely no chance of winning this tournament unless he radically changes things, something we all know he won't. We will start against Switzerland with the exact same team, other than Konsa coming in for the suspended Guehi.
It will never happen but here you go Gareth this is what you should do against Switzerland: Adventurous 3-4-1-2 formation Pickford Stones Gomez Rice (as centre back) Alexander Arnold (right wing back) Bellingham Mainoo Gordon Palmer free role behind strikers) Watkins Toney
Interesting take on the manager... Who was the last England manager with an attacking philosophy; someone who expected us to score - for my money it's been more than 20 years. Maybe we should stop expecting different results when we're so fixated on stopping the opponent.
The thing with dropping Foden as well at this stage is there is little risk. It's not like it's gonna disrupt anything, defensively. He is so isolated most of the time, it's like he is not even on the pitch. Might as well just try someone else in that area. The obvious answer is Gordon but I think we are all giving up on that change being made.
There will be no Gomez, Gordon, Palmer or Trent. There will be no Toney or Watkins from the bench. It will be someone in for Guehi (probably Konsa) and that will be it. Southgate will take the Slovakia win as proof that his system is working. It is torture to watch England play so deep with zero counter attacking threat or outlet. The build up is like they’re crossing No-Man’s Land, stepping back and sideways and very carefully advancing with sheer trepidation
Switzerland. You guys think really can win against Switzerland 🇨🇭 with this Performance Maica plz be more reliable with England yes yes we are not talk about Brazil ... but Southgate got bad Performance
I think Trippier is being made scapegoat personally, if the team had been more clinical he’d of had about 3 or 4 assists in this tournament and the attackers are squandering chances, whether it’s Kane not being where he should be, poor headers or Foden not doing the basics of timing his runs. Walker however has largely got away with sub-par performances game after game
The issue is that although Trippier does have an amazing cross on him, he playing LB narrows the pitch so much, the opposition never has to worry about trips going on the outside because EVERY SINGLE TIME, he will cut in to pass
I get that and I agree but in all fairness, he isn't a left back, he's doing his best in a position that Gareth is forcing him to play and rather unfairly being singled out by a lot of people for playing a role he's not a natural at and conveniently ignoring the fact that regardless, he's been creating multiple chances and this England team are squandering them time after time, this is a player that hasn't had the best of seasons but still contributed something like 10 assists For me, personally I think there's more of an argument for giving Trippier a go at his proper position at right back because so far like I said, Walker has done very little this tournament to really look like he's contributing much to the team, players are getting past him and he most certainly isn't creating the amount of chances Trippier has been from a position he isn't a natural at.
Micah going on about his eyesight being terrible then questioning why we should be worried about the Switzerland game. If you'd watched our last 5 games with your glasses on Micah you'd understand.
I think there is one aspect to the Southgate game plan that nobody is considering. Yeah, we lack the sort o forward momentum we want to see - but it strikes me as at least partially deliberate. I genuinely think Southgate's big idea is to try to bring teams onto us, leaving wider gaps in their midfield/defence. But the teams we've faced so far haven't taken the bait. This might change when we're up against teams with more confidence - in games that are more open. Southgate has always set his teams up to 'stretch play' - usually with very wide wingers. This reluctance for our defenders to get forward with the ball might be a part of that grand scheme. It has obvious drawbacks - primarily being that if the opposition doesn't chase the ball, they don't tire as much and so it is harder to finish them off in the last third of the game.
Would make more sense to play Gomez LB and Trent RB, gives balance cus both of the know exactly how to play and would play with a klopp style system than Southgate
Without Guehi i can vaguely understand the argument Walker as LB... but "too late to play as not played in the tournament so far" is not a great excuse. Its a proven problem position and if its an improvement its an improvement!
The fact that Joe gomes hasn’t been the starting left back says everything you need to kno about southgate could of easily done Gomez stones walker trent giving freedoms for Trent to go forward an have Joe comfortable on that left side as a cb with walker right cb an stones in the middle then you have Jude an rice to cover the midfield especially Jude on that right side for when Trent goes forward with foden in the ten floating an creating with Gordon saka an Kane it’s really not that difficult even playing Watkins on that inside left channel could of been an option with his speed an has the final pass could of also been an option I don’t understand how he can’t see that or especially how can he not see that you sacrifice Jude to an 8 because he’s an absolutely brilliant player I really don’t get why he can’t see what’s seems so clear to me
Bellingham should be banned for one game . Are we allowing people, just because they're good players, to behave like that? I know they don't ask to be role models but they are and what he did was rude
lots of makeshift options for LB but it will be goalkeeper that costs england. the way Oblak & Costa commanded their boxes last night is what England lacked vs France in the world cup. look at Pickford's position for the slovakia goal. a top level GK closes the player down when they take the loose touch past Guehi that near to goal. Pickford is rooted 2 yards off his line closing none of the angle. he can't command his 6 yard box let alone his area. Everton will stay in a relegation battle with him & England will win nothing
3 at the back makes sense - we've played it before and matched up the Swiss. Also gets more pace on the wings Bellingham and Foden more centrally without sacrificing width on both sides and shpuld get more players up the pitch so Kane doesn't feel the need to drop as deep.
Except we dropped the back three after the 2018 World Cup because Croatia spanking us by over running the two in the centre of the pitch. So why wouldn’t it just happen again?
@alastairerrett that's true. The only difference is that it matches up with the Swiss. What would you do differently, because it's obvious something different is needed!?
@@leewestbrook9122 That a good point. I hadn’t thought about the fact that it would match us up, particularly with what Kane said about not knowing how to press a back 3 with our current system
@@alastairerrett because we did it with 5 defenders who didn't offer much different in possession to 4 defenders and two up top so our two man midfield was overrun by one of the best midfields of the time and one of the best passers in the game. Doing it now it now should be to add width and control in midfield by reverting to an actual back 3 (with trent on the right of a midfield 4).
I do wonder if England will play better against more talented teams? Slovenia had a strategy to cut down the space for both England and Portugal to play to compensate for lack of quality, but more expansive teams with better quality may not play in such a way.
So true, if you ask anyone to to their jobs with their less dominant side. I was a window cleaner for 15 years and could use my left hand but never quite felt natural. Not as quite as quick but close and often go back over it again. But the windows were clean and it worked but wasn’t the same as my right hand !
At last, someone mentions Gomez. The most flexible defensive player at Liverpool, who can play centrally or can run up the line and cross well, who hasn't drawn attention because he hasn't made many mistakes. So underrated.
It's painful how quick everyone went to defend tripper rather than answer the gomez question..... As much as i love the content .. its always protect the bros and mates at all time!!
Why didn't Micah get LASIK?? I had LASIK in 2006 and it changed my life. The next morning I looked over the road from my house and I could see all the individual leaves on the trees. Amazing!!
Joey runs the outside lane. Played along side arguably the best highline, long passing centre half's of the last 10years. Hes Both footed, sure touch on both pegs, brilliant underrated range of passing. Further more he can find ball through the park, driven with accuracy on the left peg. What is the point of bringing the lad
This podcast is so good! Made the euros so much more enjoyable. I think some of the games have been pretty tough to watch, not sure if it’s the level of defending which has gone up but seems to be less chances and goals! Side table with bollocks is brilliant 😂
If you were to choose the England lineup and strategy with the current squad based on form, how would you set up the team and what would the instructions be? I would go for a 4-3-3 with Pickford, Trent - Walker - Stones - Gomez, Jude - Wharton - Rice, Palmer - Watkins - Gordon. Front foot, high press, stretch the opposition and switch play. Wharton to balance, Jude and Declan as box to box, Trent to dictate. Gomez into a back three if Trent pushes high.
Question one hits the nail on the head. Foden is a technically brilliant player, but looks completely lost when he isn't told exactly which section of the pitch to be in at which time and in which situation.
in response to the first question, as an arsenal fan, i feel that way when i'm watching arsenal, like any creativity has been suppressed and they're just performing routines and when those routines don't work they can no longer think for themselves in order to invent a solution. they're so rigidly programmed. i'd love to see some freedom and imagination integrated into it.
I know people are rallying this idea about Foden not playing in the right position. But as a top player from a top club team, I don’t believe he’s done enough to help this England team.
Was Shearer ever bald when he was playing like Zidane and Villiers? I mean most of us go bald eventually but I only remember him playing with a mop of hair?
As a West Ham fan I've known this system England are playing for too long as we had the same system under Moyes, it's not exciting to watch but sometimes it does work, hence our trophy.
Please can you analyse the fielded team against iceland just before the tournament. That team that lost was the TV managers seem to want but they still lost. People need to realise this. He has tried what people are asking for. It equally didn't work
Changing players will make little difference until they start playing with movement off the ball and zipping passes on the ball even in defence they look static compared to other international teams
I used to be a two footed left back and I was solid in my position but when I occasionally got shifted to the right back position I didn't know where the hell I was. As Micah said, everything is the opposite and it really throws you off. Only advantage was that on the left I was using my weaker foot whereas on the right I was able to be right footed but i was still at sixes and sevens regardless.
I find it crazy now days that all players aren’t two footed. Of course have a strong foot but should work on the weaker foot from a young age to be two footed. George Best said he had a weaker foot so every day after training he practiced with his weaker foot so he was two footed! Amazing the all pros don’t do this!! 🤷🏻♂️
@@IAmCrumpton agreed, I just persevered with my left and at 16 yrs old i was nearly as good with it as i was the right. One thing i couldnt do with the left was a powershot from a deadball but everything else looked natural. People often believed i was a lefty when i was a natural righty. I do believe that some of us find it easier to use the weak foot tho tbh.
The majority of players need a good system in place. Rodri has no issue with Spain, as they have a good system in place. With the amount of quality France, England and to a lesser extent Belgium have, the star players all playing poor. This is due to the system not in place and/or not working. Gomez should of played and looked at in second group game
Come on. The balance is off because you have a right footed fullback at left back. So instead you think a right footed center back there will solve it? 🤦

I’m not an expert about football tactics but surely passing between the 4 defenders for 90 mins is not the way to win?
Jordan Pickford has had more possession than all the Midfield and Kane combined.
We've heard some variation on "England play to the opponent's level" or "this is the game we kick on" every game this tournament.
We don't play to the opponent's level. We're capable of losing to Iceland and waltz all over lower ranked teams in qualifying.
Southgate just doesn't have a fucking clue.
National team football just is random. Usually the luckiest team wins, in some rare cases the best team that just did not face bad luck.
Let’s be honest no matter how loud we shout, Gareth will take our win against Slovakia as concrete proof that his trust in his methodologies work. Won’t be surprised if he will stick to his guns. Leaving the setup and team was because he was too frightened of upsetting anyone by taking them off early.
Facts. As a Football Manager at International Level GS is a spineless-coward when it comes to making instinctive match-changing decisions. Always safety 1st pass ball sideways-backwards-to-keeper. Jordan Pickford has probably had more touches with his feet than all the Midfield and Kane put together.
@@kgchi5340 Yeap …. Pickford then boots it upfield to ensure that we loose the ball ….. 🤨

No mention of the quality Gomez would bring, quite remarkable really. He’s played that position last season, the others haven’t. Alan saying it’s too late is nonsensical. The disservice to Joe Gomez is crazy. The answer is right there but no, play the rb at lb. 😮💨
I the "its too late" was about Shaw no?
dom spot on…. my question is why trippier lb at all for 4 games, why is trent on the bench, walker should be LB as trent is the better rb. we have issues going forward
@@TronLegacy5000 Southgate all over. Has his favourite players and would rather play a 'favourite' out of position than use the better option! No idea why he even brings so many, wasting their time, he just needs 13.
Both Liverpool & City & Arsenal have used inverted defenders into midfield on attacking phases of play so play Trent RB inverted then Stones,Gomez, walker as the deeper 3. Tell Rice to hold & cover were needed. These defensive tactics won't work v top teams hence southgates awful record vs top 10 teams! Play higher & we need a winger ie Gordon who can run and stretch play or there for long balls
Walker was shocking last game as well but no media talk around that. Bring on Joe Gomez and Trent!

Joe Gomez was awesome for Liverpool at left back, runs forward and great crosser
Either Joe Gomez at LB or go to a 352 (3412)
Pickford GK
Walker, Stones and Konsa/Gomez the three CB's
Saka LWB
Trent RWB
Rice and Mainoo in the midfield
Jude as the 10
Kane and Toney up top
A risk completely changing the formation, but something is needed to bring the spark back in the performances.
It’s no risk at all, anything would be an improvement and this makes absolute sense
@gustoaudio8711 The only reason I say it is a risk is because it's a quarter final game, but something has to change in order for us to actually play well. Listen I don't mind how we play if we win, but surely we won't keep winning the way we are going. I also find it criminal that Trent is not starting, by far our best creative asset and he isn't even in the team 🤷♂️
@@danruss12338Switzerland play with a back 5 and two holding mids, if England play a 433 like Italy, they will get passed off the park. Trent and Saka as RWB and LWB will at least put pressure on the Swiss full backs
@@danruss12338 Agreed, just a shame we have a manager who refuses to tweak his lineup even slightly to play to anyone’s strengths, or use his squad properly. I struggle to see how anyone could make this bunch of players perform worse together if they tried. The worst part is they seem to have got worse each game instead of better, whilst the opposition is rapidly improving. Scraping through game after game in this manner is madness. Thinking the same XI is suddenly going to improve enough to see off the Swiss is incredible!
Weird

I might add that Georgia 's never say die attitude could be transplanted to England

You're obsessed kid, get over it.
It will never happen but here you go Gareth this is what you should do against Switzerland:
Adventurous 3-4-1-2 formation
Pickford
Stones
Gomez
Rice (as centre back)
Alexander Arnold (right wing back)
Bellingham
Mainoo
Gordon
Palmer free role behind strikers)
Watkins
Toney
Southgate won’t take any notice of criticism. If he does it’s an admission he doesn’t know what he is doing!
Interesting take on the manager... Who was the last England manager with an attacking philosophy; someone who expected us to score - for my money it's been more than 20 years. Maybe we should stop expecting different results when we're so fixated on stopping the opponent.
Can only think of Terry venerables??
Especially with the attacking players we’ve had
love this trio
No Foden needs dropping, hes poor every time, only plus point is his crosses and corners but Palmer needs to start
I think Micah is just an excitable chap
Imagining Micah with the Edgar Davids shades look
“Some of us are well blessed” loool I love Micah. Great podcast this!
Will miss these podcasts when the euro’s is over. Great work fella’s 👍
14:36 micah with the snus 😂
I think Trippier is being made scapegoat personally, if the team had been more clinical he’d of had about 3 or 4 assists in this tournament and the attackers are squandering chances, whether it’s Kane not being where he should be, poor headers or Foden not doing the basics of timing his runs.
Walker however has largely got away with sub-par performances game after game
The issue is that although Trippier does have an amazing cross on him, he playing LB narrows the pitch so much, the opposition never has to worry about trips going on the outside because EVERY SINGLE TIME, he will cut in to pass
I get that and I agree but in all fairness, he isn't a left back, he's doing his best in a position that Gareth is forcing him to play and rather unfairly being singled out by a lot of people for playing a role he's not a natural at and conveniently ignoring the fact that regardless, he's been creating multiple chances and this England team are squandering them time after time, this is a player that hasn't had the best of seasons but still contributed something like 10 assists
For me, personally I think there's more of an argument for giving Trippier a go at his proper position at right back because so far like I said, Walker has done very little this tournament to really look like he's contributing much to the team, players are getting past him and he most certainly isn't creating the amount of chances Trippier has been from a position he isn't a natural at.
I think Konsa can slot in to that back 4 quite easily. He doesn’t offer much going forwards but he is a great option defensively.
@dazred1 for sure Konsa. With new blood is it worth keeping experienced bodies such as Walker (LB). Still not sure.
Everton will stay in a relegation battle with him & England will win nothing
watching the replay he almost falls over the first touch & pickford doesnt move a muscle. he will be the reason england go out like he was vs france
Yes, absolutely Joey G should have received playing time. Another indictment of Southgate.
keep underestimating Switzerland...
Slovenia had a strategy to cut down the space for both England and Portugal to play to compensate for lack of quality, but more expansive teams with better quality may not play in such a way.
gary you cant say switzerland are threat now when you said we would avoid the germans before they very nearly lost to switzerland

Foden has been a huge disappointment, Palmer must be ahead of him on current form.
Southgate would get more of a tune out of his squad if it was entirely made out of Championship players.
Gomez into a back three if Trent pushes high.
i think only Beckhams against Greece was a more clutch goal than Bellinghams
Weird that the thumb nail asks if Joe Gomez should play left back and then barely gets mentioned in the answer to the question.
Question one hits the nail on the head. Foden is a technically brilliant player, but looks completely lost when he isn't told exactly which section of the pitch to be in at which time and in which situation.
An injury to trippier may be a blessing in disguise. At least it forces Southgate to make a change

The majority of players need a good system in place. Rodri has no issue with Spain, as they have a good system in place.
