That show this is off of is amazing. It is Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Joe Ely, and Lyle Lovett. They take turns singing their songs and then sing a couple together at the end. It’s on RUclips.
I love how he casually puts seeing the statue of David, the Mona Lisa, and a watching Doc Watson sing and play on the same level. I happen to agree with Guy about Doc Watson.
On the same level to Guy but he notes the difference. He can see the David & Mona Lisa, Doc was blind. Guy's being fair w/"I have heard Doc Watson play Columbus Stockade Blues." And yer damn right right he did it on purpose.
Guy Clark was one of the kings (some say THE king) of the Texas troubadour movement. His writing is among the best...the way he surgically separates human emotion and then assigns words and phrases to elicit a particular mood. Very few in history have the mastery and understanding of this word-mind-heart-soul connection. I could give some background on the places and references he makes in the song but that would be kinda missing the point...
@David Emswiler When I posted the song I said to myself, "David's gonna be all over this one." I'm gettin' to know you these days---ha!! Not entirely predictable, but some things I get right. :-)
@@RockN2Country Your certainty lived up to your nickname...Sir Donstradamus. And tomorrow's song got me banging my keyboard as well! Hope things are good in your neck of the woods.
Don this song was in a couple different ways a tribute to Doc Watson. He was referring to Dublin, Ireland. It started as a trribute to Docs version of Columbus Stockade Blues. The singer in that song starts the story wishing he was someplace else. Supposedly Columbus Stockade Blues was fashioned after an old song called Handsome Molly. That song started out the same as the other two. The story teller wishing he was anywhere else. (I believe he was in Dublin wishing he were in London) Doc did his version of Col Stockade Blues to about the same tune as Handsome Molly and Guy as part of the tribute used a similar tune (just a bit slower I think) in his song. What is beautiful and amazing to each of us is personal. What we might consider art. For Guy (and many more of us) Doc's rendition of C S B is truly a beautiful work of art. Stay safe and well.
My favorite guy song. My dad took me to a guy show when I was 14 and it’s the only show I’ve ever been to where you could literally hear a pin drop in the crowd. Even when he was older he had everyone’s full attention. Greatness!
I love this song. Guy is one of my favorite songwriters. His version of “Come from the heart” which was written by his wife is brilliant. My favorite song of his is “Magnolia wind”. It should remind you of someone you can’t live without. Also, Doc Watson’s “Sittin on top of the world “ is great.
Sad he passed away early this year, he was in a rare group of Country Singers who are known as "The Storytellers". Along with Shel Silverstein, Townes Van Zandt, Billy Joe Shaver, Willie Nelson...and yes, there is a Dublin, Tx.
Guy was a master of his art as you can see from this great performance. I think he was probably referencing Dublin, Texas as opposed to the capital city of Ireland. Another great reaction, Don, and keep rockin' dat country.
I love this song of Guys. One of my all time favorites. Edit: I would suggest Guys song "The Randall Knife" to look at. That one makes me cut onions every time if you know what I mean.
I love Guy Clark he’s in my Top 2 favorite artist along with Waylon Jennings. They both keep swapping out the #1 & #2 spots. I’d love to see you react to Guy’s song Comes From The Heart.
He sings a couple of others that I love, but for different reasons. Home Grown Tomatoes is a light one, and I still think the best tomatoes are grown in NJ. The other song is The Randall Knife - so much heart in this one.
Does anyone know what kind of guitar he's playing here? Fuck, that thing has guts for such a soft tune, iv loved this song for most of my years, I love guy clark, but never known the guitars he plays, this peice is always beautiful, I'd love to know if anyone knows what guitar he's playing in this particular rendition, it's amazing
I'll 2nd that Don. The lyrics, so powerful. Yeah so many of us can really relate. I like most stuff I've heard from Guy but I had not heard this before. Sounds of a desolate soul.
do yourself a favor and spend some time in Guy's library of songs. Check out Verlon Thompson and Shawn Camp as well. would love to see a reaction video on Let Him Roll, another Guy classic
That was great! Love this song! I’m not positive but I like to think he’s talking about Dublin, Texas. I grew up close to Dublin and I know the town well because I probably drank about 10,000 “Dublin Dr Peppers” which were made with real cane sugar. Brings back memories.
Unfortunately he's talking about Ireland...him and Steve Earle frequented the country alot. But in all fairness, since Mr. Clark wasn't specific, the folks of Dublin Tx have every right to claim its about them (and many do!)
David Emswiler that’s cool if it’s about Ireland or if there is still some mystery about the song years after the man has left us. Maybe Steve can clear it up in a comment if he reads this... just goin through some RUclips videos of Guys and found Mcmurtrys cover of “cold dog soup”. Man that would be a reaction to behold.
You should take a listen to a more fun song is "Texas 1947" and "Let Him Roll"...Let him roll is an outstandingly sad song, and likely true, knowing him as I did. He claimed it was about someone else, but the wink he gave me told me otherwise.
So much emotion in Guy Clark's songs. You've got to check out Jason Isbell's cover of "Desperadoes Waiting for a Train" at the tribute to Guy Clark concert. Sadly, Clark wasn't able to attend because he was in the hospital and he died shortly thereafter. But its one of the best covers I've ever heard ruclips.net/video/sOOH8shmKnQ/видео.html
I would sing this to my daughter in lieu of lullabies... She knew the words before she could talk; if I messed up or tried to skip anything she would fuss!

Pretty much my favorite Guy Clark song. I ALWAYS listen to th is song anytime it comes on, and enjoy it every single time.

Guy Clark has some awesome songs . One of my favorite’s is Stuff That Works. A simple song that paints me to a tee.
Stuff that Works is one of the greatest songs ever written.
@@SirOtter1 I can’t argue with that!
Guy Clark is one of our best songwriters. So many artists have covered his songs, especially "Desperados Waiting For A Train."
Great songwriter RIP Guy. One of my all time favorites.

Love that fing song....so cool...I write and wish I had written it lol...
nothing like a Guy Clark song!
My three favorite songwriters : Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, and Guy Clark
Yep...great list. I'm guessing your second favorites include Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Gary P. Nunn? :-)
I tried to get into Kris, but it seems many of his songs are talking songs. Got any recommendations for more melodic ones of his? Thanks.
