My disaster story . My family had a cottage on the Great Lakes in Canada. At the time, I had been a lifeguard with the Royal Lifesaving Society of Canada for 2 years. Despite growing up in the pool and open water, I still managed to get pinned under a canoe by a 4 foot wave on a sandbar. One day after a storm, I went out to surf my canoe in the waves. My near drowning came as I was attempting to turn around and go out for another run. Rather than turn around on the seat and paddle out, I turned the canoe sideways to the waves trying to turn the whole canoe 180 degrees. The canoe fell into the trough at the base of the next wave which carried me sideways, then the wave curled over, flipping and slamming the canoe to the sandy bottom. The air pocket was blown out and I was pinned to the bottom with the canoe suctioned down on top of me. I could hold my breath for 5 minutes back then. It took a lot of waves and rocking back and forth, lying on my back, leg pressing upwards to flip the canoe off of me with the next waves. I was a teenager who was 5'10, 200 lbs, played american football and rugby. The only things that saved me were a level head, knowledge of leverage and mechanical advantage, physical strength, lung capacity and well developed athletic abilities. Worst of all, I was on the water alone after a storm, there was no one on the beach to help. There would be no rescue, it would have been a body recovery.
As lovers of the water sports we can relate to this and the effort it would have taken to free yourself. I read this out to Rob, when I mentioned the air pocket being blown out suctioning the canoe down on you we both exhaled, 'wooh'. Thank you for sharing your story.

i was almost drown in the swimming pool at 6 yr old and never went into the water ever since...so tell me about drowning and i will tell you about panic. The time was 3:45pm and till this day 60 yrs later - still fresh in my mind...
Oh that's so sad Chao. To have lived through such an experience that changed your life in such a dramatic way. I can only say it's never too late to have a go! :-)
Yikes...well done Mom!
It was very yikes. We learnt a lot from this mistake.
Help, we’re confused, your new intro which started 7 months ago had the scuba footage (Rachel 21ish) which we’ve just seen in episode 87. Are the videos 7 months behind real time? Hope you guys are well. Love the channel!
You spotted it Mathew. Yes we are about 8 months behind. We like to have a little cushion between us and real time but we are doing two episodes a week for the next wee while to try and catch up a bit.
That was scary.
Sure was the little man had a freak out moment.
That was kind of not cool. That was extremely dangerous...glad he is ok.
You got that right Peter. Scary how these things can happen. First time unguided and a few things coming together to nearly make the perfect storm!
It's worth noting that we could have left it out and you'd be none the wiser. We think it's important to not only show the cool stuff but the not so cool stuff as well. We hope learnings and entertainment can be gleaned from both ends of the spectrum.
ditch the belt ditch the belt ditch the belt
Yeah, absolutely. Being the first dive, even though we all knew the protocol, it didn't come naturally.
9:23 Pffft. I lived a long and unhealthy life, I weigh 120kg, just checked my blood pressure and guess what? 117x65. HA! Let's check Captain Pimplenose there, see how his life of sports achievements made him better than my life as a hamburger cemetery..
PS Pulse - 50. You have bradicardia, love. COFFEE!!! STAT!
110/70 standard fare.
sticking plaster made out of textile cloth sticks to skin... all others are rubbish... 😉🙂
Good advice. I think Rob just grabbed the first thing he found. I prefer the ones you mention
